  • The graft copolymer consisting of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) and single-stranded DNA was prepared. Interestingly, the copolymer was found to form nanoparticles above physiological temperature. We found that non-crosslinking aggregation of the nanoparticles was induced by the hybridization of the surface-bound DNA with the full-match complementary DNA, but not with one-base mismatch. The core material is not restricted to PNIPAAm; DNA-functionalized gold nanoparticle was found to show a similar aggregation induced only by the fully-complementary DNA, resulting in rapid color change within 3 min at ambient temperature. This methodology is general in principle and applicable for wide variety of clinical gene diagnosis.

  • An extensive anticancer drug screening from natural resources has been carried out primarily using murine tumor model for past fourty years. Recently a new screening program from NCI, so called disease-oriented screening system. has been estabished to detect anticancer drugs that show selective growth inhibition toward variety of tissue specific human solid tumors originated from leukemia, lung, colon, CNS, melanoma, ovarian, renal, prostate amd breast. To develope the anticancer drugs from oriental medicinal herbs, we investigated the cytotoxic effects against human tumor cell panels with 23 kinds of MeOH extract of medicinal herbs. Evodiae Fructus, Meliae Toosendan Fructus, Saussureae Radix and Pharbitidis Semen showed strong activities against several tumor cell lines.

  • In this paper, we propose a human face detection algorithm using adaptive skin color model and neural networks. To attain robustness in the changes of illumination and variability of human skin color, we perform a color segmentation of input image by thresholding adaptively in modified hue-saturation color space (TSV). In order to distinguish faces from other segmented objects, we calculate invariant moments for each face candidate and use the multilayer perceptron neural network of backpropagation algorithm. The simulation results show superior performance for a variety of poses and relatively complex backgrounds, when compared to other existing algorithm.

  • Many applications in computer graphics require highly detailed complex models. However, the level of detail may vary considerably according to applications. It is often desirable to use approximations in place of excessively detailed models. We have developed a surface simplification algorithm which uses iterative contractions of edges to simplify models and maintains surface error approximations using a quadric metric. In this paper, we present an improved quadric error metric for simplifying meshes. The new metric, based on subdivided edge classification, results in more accurate simplified meshes. We show that a subdivided edge classification captures discontinuities efficiently. The new scheme is demonstrated on a variety of meshes.

  • $\alpha$-Glucosidase contributing $\alpha$-glucan metabolism in microorganisms is characterized by the variety in substrate recognition. Recent studies on microbial enzymes show that $\alpha$-glucosidases are divided into two groups, family I and family n, in which family I enzymes have four conserved catalytic-regions of $\alpha$-amylase family. The presentation focusing on the difference of the $\alpha$-glucosidase families reviews i) the catalytic amino-acid residues of nucleophile and acid/base catalyst, and ii) the molecular evolution of two families.

  • Zellner(1994) introduced the notion of a balanced loss function in the context of a general liner model to reflect both goodness of fit and precision of estimation. We study the perspective of unifying a variety of results both frequentist and Bayesian from Poisson distributions. We show that frequentist and Bayesian results for balanced loss follow from and also imply related results for quadratic loss functions reflecting only precision of estimation. Several examples are given for Poisson distribution.

  • If ${\phi}$ is a polarizable endomorphism on a projective variety, then the Weil height machine guarantees that ${\phi}$ satisfies Northcott's theorem. In this paper, we show that Northcott's theorem only holds for polarizable endomorphisms and generalize this result to arbitrary dominant endomorphisms: we introduce the height expansion and contraction coefficients which provide weak Northcott's theorem for dominant endomorphisms. We also give some applications of the height expansion and contraction coefficients.

  • The distribution of staff in a hierachial organization has been studied in a variety of forms and models. Results here show that the promotion process follows a binomial distribution with parameters n and $\alpha=e^{-pt}$ and the recruitment process follows a poisson distribution with parameter $\lambda$. Futhermore, the mean time to promotion in the grade was estimated.

  • E-business managers must make a profit on the goods and services they sell. But e-business retailers are still searching for strategies that work. To test current practices, we became 'phantom shoppers' and bought a randomly chosen set of CDs from a variety of E-business manager. Our findings suggest that order management and logistics skills are pivotal for selling profitably on the Website. In this article, we show how e-business managers can deploy resources creatively to attract the right shoppers, convert these shoppers into buyers, and improve the chances of repeat purchase while maintaining profit margins.
