  • Using the Lorenz-95 simple model, which can simulate many atmospheric characteristics, we compare the performance of ensemble strategies such as bred vectors, the bred vectors rotated (to be orthogonal to each bred member), and the Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (ETKF). The performance metrics used are the RMSE of ensemble means, the ratio of RMS error of ensemble mean to the spread of ensemble, rank histograms to see if the ensemble member can well represent the true probability density function (pdf), and the distribution of eigen-values of the forecast ensemble, which can provide useful information on the independence of each member. In the meantime, the orthogonal bred vectors can achieve the considerable progress comparing the bred vectors in all aspects of RMSE, spread, and independence of members. When we rotate the bred vectors for orthogonalization, the improvement rate for the spread of ensemble is almost as double as that for RMS error of ensemble mean compared to the non-rotated bred vectors on a simple model. It appears that the result is consistent with the tentative test on the operational model in KMA. In conclusion, ETKF is superior to the other two methods in all terms of the assesment ways we used when it comes to ensemble prediction. But we cannot decide which perturbation strategy is better in aspect of the structure of the background error covariance. It appears that further studies on the best perturbation way for hybrid variational data assimilation to consider an error-of-the-day(EOTD) should be needed.

  • The Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) from GPS with high resolution in terms of time and space might reduce the limitations of the numerical weather prediction (NWP) model for easily variable phenomena, such as precipitation and cloud. We have converted to PWV from Global Positioning System (GPS) data of Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) and Ministry of Maritime Affairs & Fisheries (MOMAF). First of all, we have selected the heavy rainfall case of having a predictability limitation in time and space due to small-scale motion. In order to evaluate the effect for GPS PWV, we have executed the sensitivity experiment with PWV from GPS data over Korean peninsula in the Weather Research & Forecasting 3-Dimensional Variational (WRF-3DVAR). We have also suggested the direction of further research for an improvement of the predictability of NWP model on the basis of this case.

  • We demonstrated the importance of initial estimates of model parameters and the utility of an optimization approach of the uncertain forcing of wind-driven circulation off the southeastern coastal waters of Korea. The wind stress represents the upper boundary condition in this model and enters in the model equation as a forcing term in the numerical formalism. The wind field contributes to maintain the almost time-independent distribution of the upper layer thickness feature in a north-south direction and negative wind stress curl to maintain the formation of warm eddy off the southeastern coastal waters of Korea. Elucidated is the variational characteristics of the East Korean Warm Current due to the variations of the zonally averaged wind stress (southward transport) from the seasonal variations of the meridional transport by the Ekman transport.

  • The conventional observations of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) are compared in the numerical weather forecast system at the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems (KIAPS). The weather forecasting system used in this study is consists of Korea Integrated Model (KIM) as a global numerical weather prediction model, three-dimensional variational method as a data assimilation system, and KIAPS Package for Observation Processing (KPOP) as an observation pre-processing system. As a result, the forecast performance of NCEP observation was better while the number of observation is similar to the KMA observation. In addition, the sensitivity of forecast performance was investigated for each SONDE, SURFACE and AIRCRAFT observations. The differences in AIRCRAFT observation were not sensitive to forecast, but the use of NCEP SONDE and SURFACE observations have shown better forecast performance. It is found that the NCEP observations have more wind observations of the SONDE in the upper atmosphere and more surface pressure observations of the SURFACE in the ocean. The results suggest that evenly distributed observations can lead to improved forecast performance.

  • Studies on landscape ecology have focused on conceptual aspects, while empirical focus for spatial planning has been rarely conducted. This study conducted an empirical analysis to enhance landscape ecological performance of urban developments using landscape ecology. To do so, concrete criteria and standards to analyze structural, functional and variational mechanisms of urban landscape ecology were developed. An integrated landscape ecology assessment model that can be applied to urban development planning was established by combining the criteria. Next, Landscape Ecological Management System (LEMS) was developed to implement an integrated assessment using GIS. To verify the effectiveness of the system, a case study was conducted using LEMS on Byulnae City in the Seoul Metropolitan Area. The LEMS can be useful for urban planners and policy makers in their selection of desirable planning alternatives. Moreover, the LEMS developed in this study can be a useful tool for academia in terms of the implementation of further related studies, and for planning professionals in their environmental impact assessment tasks.

  • In this paper vibration and stability analysis of laminated composite shells based on the first order shear deformation theory(FSDT) for two different boundary conditions(clamped-clamped, simply supported) are performed. Structural model of cross-ply symmetric laminated composite cylindrical shells subjected to a combination of magnetic and thermal fields is developed via Hamilton's variational principle. These coupled equations of motion are based on the electromagnetic equations(Faraday, Ampere, Ohm, and Lorenz equations)and thermal equations which are involved in constitutive equations. Extended Galerkin method is adopted to obtain the discretized equations of motion. Variations of dynamic characteristics of composite shells with applied magnetic field, temperature gradient, laminate thickness-ratio and radius ratio for two boundary conditions are investigated and pertinent conclusions are derived.

  • In this research mass of a plane strain two dimensional elastic concrete dam under gravitational and hydrostatic loads is minimized, through shape optimization of the dam cross section. Cross sectional area of the dam is taken as cost function of the optimization problem while constraints on the principal stress distribution and dam thickness are imposed. Shape of the boundary of the model is chosen as design variable. Variational formulation of the optimization problem, the material derivative idea of continuum mechanics, and an adjoint variable method are employed for the shape design sensitivity calculation. Then the gradient projection algorithm is utilized to obtain an optimum design iteratively. Research results fully demonstrate that the theory and procedure adopted are quite efficient and can be applicable to a wide class of practical elastic structural design problems.

  • This paper investigates the tolerance stack-up in a commercial sliding-type mobile phone model developed by a Korean electronics company, with focus on the dimensional quality of the gap between the sliding top and the main body. The tolerance analysis in this study is done using a commercial software package, which runs Monte Carlo simulations to produce the statistical distributions of the gap size at desired locations. Such an analysis revealed that the original design did not yield the desired dimensional quality of the gap. Through a series of systematic analyses and syntheses, an improved design is proposed for the nominal dimensions and tolerances of selected features of the parts. The proposed design was validated, through tolerance analysis simulation, to meet the desired requirement of the gap quality.

  • The total energy and strength of Mg alloy doped with Al, Ca and Zn, were calculated using the density functional theory. The calculations was performed by two programs; the discrete variational $X{\alpha}\;(DV-X{\alpha})$ method, which is a sort of molecular orbital full potential method; Vienna Ab-initio Simulation Package (VASP), which is a sort of pseudo potential method. The fundamental mixed orbital structure in each energy level near the Fermi level was investigated with simple model using $DV-X{\alpha}$. The optimized crystal structures calculated by VASP were compared to the measured structure. The density of state and the energy levels of dopant elements was discussed in association with properties. When the lattice parameter obtained from this study was compared, it was slightly different from the theoretical value but it was similar to Mk, and we obtained the reliability of data. A parameter Mk obtained by the $DV-X{\alpha}$ method was proportional to electronegativity and inversely proportional to ionic radii. We can predict the mechanical properties because $\Delta{\overline{Mk}}$is proportional to hardness.

  • It is known that the mim forming processes show somewhat different phenomena compared with the conventional metal forming processes, namely, the size effect, enhanced friction effect and etc. Such typical phenomena, however, are not predicted by the conventional finite element analysis, which has been an efficient numerical tool to predict the metal forming processes. It is due to the fact that the constitutive relations used does not describe the microstructural characteristics of the materials. In the present investigation, the finite element formulation using the rate-dependent rigid plastic crystal plasticity model of the face-centered cubic materials is conducted to predict the micro mechanical behaviors during the mim forming processes. The finite element analysis, however, provides mesh-dependent solutions for the intragranular deformations. Therefore, the couple stress energy is additionally introduced into the variational principle and formulated within the framework of the rigid plastic finite element method to obtain mesh-independent solutions. Micro deformations of single crystal and bicrystal with various orientations are calculated to show the potential of the developed formulation.
