Carbon and Energy Balances of Glucose Fermentation with Hydrogen-producing Bacterium Citrobacter amalonaticus Y19

  • For the newly isolated $H_2$-producing chemoheterotrophic bacterium Citrobacter amalonaticus Y19, anaerobic glucose metabolism was studied in batch cultivation at varying initial glucose concentrations (3.5-9.5 g/l). The carbon-mass and energy balances were determined and utilized to analyze the carbon metabolic-pathways network. The analyses revealed (a) variable production of major metabolites ($H_2$, ethanol, acetate, lactate, $CO_2$, and cell mass) depending on initial glucose levels; (b) influence of NADH regeneration on the production of acetate, lactate, and ethanol; and (c) influence of the molar production of ATP on the production of biomass. The results reported in this paper suggest how the carbon metabolic pathway(s) should be designed for optimal Hz production, especially at high glucose concentrations, such as by blocking the carbon flux via lactate dehydrogenase from the pyruvate node.

Topology Optimization of a HDD Actuator Arm

  • A study on the topology optimization of a Hard-Disk-Driver(HDD) actuator arm is presented. The purpose of the present wert is to increase the natural frequency of tole first lateral mode of the HDD actuator arm under the constraint of total moment of inertia, so as to facilitate the position control of the high speed actuator arm. The first lateral mode is an important factor in the position control process. Thus the topology optimization for 2-D model of the HDD actuator arm is considered. A new objective function corresponding to multieigenvalue optimization is suggested to improve the solution of the eigenvalue optimization problem. The material density of the structure is treated as the design variable and the intermediate density is penalized. The effects of different element types and material property functions on the final topology are studied. When the problem is discretized using 8-node element of a uniform density, tole smoothly-varying density field is obtained without checker-board patterns incurred. AS a result of 7he study, an improved design of the HDD actuator arm is suggested. Dynamic characteristics of the suggested design are compared computationally with those of the old design. With the same amount of the moment of inertia, the natural frequency of the first lateral mode of the suggested design is subsequently increased over the existing one.

분포정수를 갖는 전기회로에 대한 최대원리의 응용 (An Application of the Maximum Principle to Distributive Electrical Circuits)

  • This thesis has suggested a method of applying the Maximum Principle of Pontryagin to the optimal control of distributive electrical networks. In general, electrical networks consist of branches, nodes, sources and loads. The effective values of steady state currents and voltages are independent of time but only expressed as the functions of position. Moreover, most of the node voltages and branch currents are not predetermined, that is, initially unknown, and their inherent loop characteristics satisfy only Kirchhoff's current and voltage laws. The Maximum Principle, however, needs the initial fixed values of all state variables for its standand way of application. In spite of this inconsistency this thesis has undertaken to suggest a new approach to the successful solution of the above mentioned networks by introducing scaling factors and a state variable change technique which transform the boundary-value unknown problem into the boundary-value partially fixed and partially free problem. For the examples of applying the method suggested, the control problems for minimizing copper quantity in a distribution line have been solved with voltage drop constraint imposed on. In the case of uniform load distribution it has been shown that the optimal wire diameter of the distribution line is reciprocally proportional to the root of distance. For the same load pattern as above the wire diameter giving the minimum copper loss in the distribution line has been shown to be reciprocally proportional to distance.

자돈의 톡소플라즈마증 발생 (Toxoplasmosis in piglets)

  • Suckling piglets and weaned pigs showed anorexia, dehydration, severe abdominal breathing, emaciation and paresis from Oct. 1993. to Nov. 1993. Five 2-week-old piglets were submitted for diagnosis in Kangwon National University. At necropsy, the pin-point well demarcated yellowish white foci were scattered on the surface of the lung, heart, liver, spleen and kidney. Histologically, multifocal areas of necrosis with mononuclear cells infiltration were found in the lung, heart, liver, lymph node, spleen, kidney and small intestine. These lesions tended to be associated with blood vessels. Variable round to ovoid tachyzoites were located at the periphery of the lesions. The organisms were demonstrated as Toxoplasma gondii by immunohistochemical staining method. Ultrastructurally, this parasite was surrounded with parasitophorous vacuole in alveolar macrophage. The parasite was crescent-shaped and $6{\sim}8{\times}1{\sim}2{\mu}m$ in size. It was enclosed by an thick outer membrane and an underlying thin inner membrane. Several club-shaped paired organelles and conoids lay in the cytoplasm at the anterior. Numerous round body and one to several mitochondria were presented in the cytoplasm. Based on the gross findings, histopathology, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic findings, this case was diagnosed as toxoplasmosis in piglets.

A Gate-Leakage Insensitive 0.7-V 233-nW ECG Amplifier using Non-Feedback PMOS Pseudo-Resistors in 0.13-μm N-well CMOS

  • A fully-differential low-voltage low-power electrocardiogram (ECG) amplifier by using the nonfeedback PMOS pseudo-resistors is proposed. It consists of two operational-transconductance amplifiers (OTA) in series (a preamplifier and a variable-gain amplifier). To make it insensitive to the gate leakage current of the OTA input transistor, the feedback pseudo-resistor of the conventional ECG amplifier is moved to input branch between the OP amp summing node and the DC reference voltage. Also, an OTA circuit with a Gm boosting block without reducing the output resistance (Ro) is proposed to maximize the OTA DC gain. The measurements shows the frequency bandwidth from 7 Hz to 480 Hz, the midband gain programmable from 48.7 dB to 59.5 dB, the total harmonic distortion (THD) less than 1.21% with a full voltage swing, and the power consumption of 233 nW in a 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process at the supply voltage of 0.7 V.

  • 장기간 피부에 존재하는 궤양성 반흔이나, 만성골 수염의 누루 등에서 편평상피 세포암이 잘 발생하며 이들은 동통이 더욱 심해지거나 종괴의 크기가 갑자기 증가할때 그리고 분비물(discharge)이 늘어 날때는 악성 변화를 의심하여야 하며 조기에 생검을 하여 진단 후 적절한 수술적 치료가 필요하다. 또한 이들은 국소 림프절로의 전이가 빈발하므로 Grade II와 III에서는 예방적으로 국소 림프절에 방사선 조사(irradiation)를 고려해야 된다.

  • 무선 센서 네트워크에서 공간적-시간적 상관관계에 따른 중복 데이터의 발생은 데이터 전송 시에 불필요한 에너지를 소모하여 네트워크 수명을 감소시킨다. 본 논문에서는 먼지 센서를 통한 데이터 수집 실험을 진행하여 공간적-시간적 데이터 중복을 확인하고 이를 해결하기 위해 데이터 전송 허용범위 설정 방법을 제안한다. 제안하는 방법은 클러스터 내의 통합 평균값을 이용하여 데이터 전송 허용범위를 설정한다. 설정된 허용범위는 멤버 노드의 중복 데이터를 감소시키며 클러스터 헤드에서 허용범위 재설정을 통해 수집 데이터의 가변적인 환경에서도 중복 데이터 감소가 가능함을 보인다.

구조적 LDPC 부호의 효율적인 설계 (Efficient Design of Structured LDPC Codes)

  • LDPC 부호의 높은 부호화 복잡도는 구조적인 패리티 검사 행렬의 설계로 해결할 수 있다. 패리티 검사 행렬을 같은 유형의 블록으로 구성한다면 복호화기의 구현이 간단해지고 구조적 복호화가 가능하며 LDPC 부호를 저장하는데 필요한 메모리를 줄일 수 있는 장점이 있다. 본 논문에서는 부행렬 단위의 girth 조건과 PEG 알고리즘, 비트 노드의 connectivity를 이용하여 부행렬이 순환행렬이나 영행렬로 구성되는 짧은 길이를 갖는 구조적 LDPC 부호의 생성 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 이 알고리즘으로 생성된 부호는 구조적 제한이 없이 생성된 부호에 비하여 낮은 SNR에서는 비슷한 성능을, 높은 SNR에서는 더 좋은 성능을 내는 것을 모의 실험을 통해 확인하였다.

A Design of the Safe Zone Managing Algorithm with the Variable Interval Sensing Scheme for the Sensor Networks

  • In this paper, we propose a scheme to prolong the lifetime of the sensor network by reducing the power consumption of the sensor node. The proposed algorithm reduces the number of transmissions and sensing at the application layer. We combine the VIS scheme with the MSZ algorithm and call it as the SZM/VIS algorithm. The actual temperature data was collected using the sensor nodes to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm. The proposed algorithm was implemented through the programming and was evaluated under various setting values. Experimental results show that the SZM/VIS has a slightly improved transmission ratio than that of the MSZ while has the periodic transmission capability like as the MSZ. Also the SZM/VIS can significantly reduces the sensing ratio like that of the VIS. Our algorithm has the advantages of instantaneous, simplicity, small overhead and robustness. Our algorithm has just negligible side effects by controlling the parameter properly depending on the application types. The SZM/VIS algorithm will be able to be used effectively for the applications that need to be managed within a certain range of specific properties, such like crop management.

Evaluation of the 7th UICC TNM Staging System of Gastric Cancer

  • Since January of 2010, the seventh edition of UICC tumor node metastasis (TNM) Classification, which has recently been revised, has been applied to almost all cases of malignant tumors. Compared to previous editions, the merits and demerits of the current revisions were analyzed. Many revisions have been made for criteria for the classification of lymph nodes. In particular, all the cases in whom the number of lymph nodes is more than 7 were classified as N3 without being differentiated. Therefore, the coverage of the N3 was broad. Owing to this, there was no consistency in predicting the prognosis of the N3 group. By determining the positive cases to a distant metastasis as TNM stage IV, the discrepancy in the TNM stage IV compared to the sixth edition was resolved. In regard to the classification system for an esophagogastric (EG) junction carcinoma, it was declared that cases of an invasion to the EG junction should follow the classification system for esophageal cancer. A review of clinical cases reported from Asian patients suggests that it would be more appropriate to follow the previous editions of the classification system for gastric cancer. In addition, in the classification of the TNM stages in the overall cases, the discrepancy in the prognosis between the different stages and the consistency in the prognosis between the same TNM stages were achieved to a lesser extent as compared to that previously. Accordingly, further revisions are needed to develop a purposive classification method where the prognosis can be predicted specifically to each variable and the mode of the overall classification can be simplified.
