The effects of Cr, Mo or B additions were investigated on $B2{\leftrightarrow}DO_3$ structural transition temperature $(T_C)$ and mechanical properties of Fe-28at.%Al. The raw materials were arc-melted in vacuum and then subjected to the following heat-treatments to maximize the $DO_3$ ordered structure : $1000^{\circ}C/7days$, slowly cooled to $500^{\circ}C$ and then held for 5 days. In the effect on the grain refinment, the addition of alloying element B was the most effective. The addition of Cr or Mo had little effect. When 1at.%Mo was added, $T_c$ increase about $30^{\circ}C$, but Cr had a very little effect on $T_c$. On the contrary, when B was added, $T_c$ was apt to come down minutely. In the additional effect of alloying element on the mechanical properties, Cr was apt to decrease the microvickers hardness and yield strength, Mo and B didn't have much effect. In the case of compressure strength test, the effect of the environment on the yield strength was contrary to the result of the tensile strength test.
The automatic welding systems, have received much attention in recent years, because they are highly suitable not only to increase the quality and productivity, but also to decrease manufacturing time and cost for a given product. Automatic welding work in semiconductor or space industry to be carried out in pipe line and butt joint mostly and plasma arc welding(PAW) is actively applied. To get the desired quality welds in automated welding system is challenging, a mathematical model is needed that has complete control over the relevant process parameters in order to obtain the required mechanical properties. However, In various industries the welding process mathematical model is not fully formulated for the process parameter and on the welding conditions, therefore only partial variables can be predicted. Therefore, this paper investigates the interaction between the welding parameters and mechanical properties for predicting the weld bead geometry by analyzing the S/N ratio.
The Zr-0.2Sn-0.8Nb-X(X = 0~200ppm Si, 0~0.4wt.% Mo and Mn respectively) ingots for test specimens were manufactured by a vacuum arc re-melting method to find out the effect of Si, Mo, and Mn on the corrosion characteristics of the Zr-0.2Sn-0.8Nb alloy. After being heat-treated and rolled repeatedly out to be flat materials, they were finally heat-treated at 51$0^{\circ}C$ for three hours and used as the specimens for corrosion tests. The corrosion behavior of the specimens was studied in both 40$0^{\circ}C$ steam for 200 days and in aqueous 70 ppm LiOH solution at 36$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 days. From the study it was found that Si from 80 to 200 ppm contributed to increasing the corrosion resistance of Zr-0.2Sn-0.8Nb alloy in both steam and LiOH solution. This study also showed that Mn from 0.1 to 0.4% caused to go up the corrosion resistance, whereas Mo played a apart in improving the corrosion resistance only between 0.05 and 0.2 wt.%.
The effect of nitrogen doping on the mechanical and tribological performance of single-layer tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C:N) coatings of up to $1{\mu}m$ in thickness was investigated using a custom-made filtered cathode vacuum arc (FCVA). The results obtained revealed that the hardness of the coatings decreased from $65{\pm}4.8GPa$ to $25{\pm}2.4GPa$ with increasing nitrogen gas ratio, which indicates that nitrogen doping occurs through substitution in the $sp^2$ phase. Subsequent AES analysis showed that the N/C ratio in the ta-C:N thick-film coatings ranged from 0.03 to 0.29 and increased with the nitrogen flow rate. Variation in the G-peak positions and I(D)/I(G) ratio exhibit a similar trend. It is concluded from these results that micron-thick ta-C:N films have the potential to be used in a wide range of functional coating applications in electronics. To achieve highly conductive and wear-resistant coatings in system components, the friction and wear performances of the coating were investigated. The tribological behavior of the coating was investigated by sliding an SUJ2 ball over the coating in a ball-on-disk tribo-meter. The experimental results revealed that doping using a high nitrogen gas flow rate improved the wear resistance of the coating, while a low flow rate of 0-10 sccm increased the coefficient of friction (CoF) and wear rate through the generation of hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) phases by tribo-chemical reaction. However, the CoF and wear rate dramatically decreased when the nitrogen flow rate was increased to 30-40 sccm, due to the nitrogen inducing phase transformation that produced a graphite-like structure in the coating. The widths of the wear track and wear scar were also observed to decrease with increasing nitrogen flow rate. Moreover, the G-peaks of the wear scar around the SUJ2 ball on the worn surface increased with increasing nitrogen doping.
This study is focusing on the improvement of problems of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. A new Ti based alloy, Ti-15Sn-4Nb, have designed to examine any possibility of improving the mechanical properties and biocompatibility. Specimens of Ti alloys were melted in vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $100^{\circ}C$ for 24h. All specimens were solution treated at $812^{\circ}C$ and aged at $500^{\circ}C$ for 10h. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization test and immersion test inl%Lactic acid solutions. Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys showed Widmanstatten microstructure after solution treatment which is typical microstructure of ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ type Ti alloys. Analysing the corrosion resistance of Ti alloys, it was concluded that the passive films of Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys are more stable than that of Ti-6Al-4V alloys. Also, the corrosion resistance of Ti-15Sn-4Nb system alloys was improved with adding elements, Hf. It was analysed that the passive film of the Ti-15Sn-4Nb alloy which was formed in air atmosphere was consisted of TiO2, SnO and NbO through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) analysis.

Pulsed magnetron sputtering of graphite target was employed for deposition of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. Time-resolved probe measurements of magnetron discharge plasma have been performed. It was shown that the pulsed magnetron discharge plasma density ($∼10^{17}$$m^{-3}$ ) is close to that of vacuum arc cathode sputtering of graphite. Raman spectroscopy was sed to examine DLC films produced at low ( $U_{sub}$ / < 1 kV) pulsed bias voltages applied to the substrate. It has been shown that maximum content of diamond-like carbon in the coating (50-60%) is achieved at energy per deposited carbon atom of $E_{c}$ =100 eV. In spite of rather high percentage of $sp^3$-bonded carbon atoms and good scratch-resistance, the films showed poor adhesion because of absence of ion mixing between the film and the substrates. Electric breakdowns occurring during the deposition of the insulating DLC film also thought to decrease its adhesion.
In this study, fractured surface morphology and mechanical properties of Ni-Cr-Mo alloys with various contents of Mo for dental material use have been evaluated by mechanical test. The alloys used were Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys with Mo contents of 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt.%, prepared by using a vacuum arc-melting furnace. Ni-13Cr-xMo alloys were used for mechanical test without heat treatment. The phase and microstructure of alloys using an X-ray diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy (OM) were evaluated. To examine the mechanical properties of alloys according to microstructure changes, the tensile test and the hardness test were carried out using tensile tester. To understand the mechanism of Mo addition to Ni-Cr alloy on mechanical property, the morphology and fractured surfaces of alloys were investigated by field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). As a result, 79Ni-13Cr-8Mo alloy was verified that the tensile strength and the hardness were better than others. Varying Mo content, the changes of microstructures of alloys were identified by OM and SEM and that of 79Ni-13Cr-8Mo alloy was proved fabricated well. Microstructures of alloys were changed depending on Mo content ratio. It has been observed that 8% alloy had the most suitable mechanical property for dental alloy.

This research addresses the improvement of tribo-systems, specifically regarding the reduction of friction and wear through tribo-coupling between tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) with different types of counterpart materials, namely bearing steel (SUJ2), tungsten carbide (WC), stainless steel (SUS304), and alumina ($Al_2O_3$). A second variable in this project is the utilization of different values of duct bias voltage in the deposition of the ta-C coating - 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 V. The results of this research are expected to determine the optimum duct bias and best counter materials associated with ta-C to produce the lowest friction and wear. Results obtained reveal that the tribo-couple between the ta-C coating and SUJ2 balls produces the lowest friction coefficient and wear rate. In terms of duct bias changes, deposition using 5 V produces the most optimum tribological behavior with lowest friction and wear on the tribo-system. In contrast, the tribo-couple between ta-C with a WC ball causes penetration through the coating surface layer and hence high surface delamination. This study demonstrates that the most effective ta-C coating duct bias is 5 V associated with SUJ2 counter material to produce the lowest friction and wear.
Cr-Si based alloys are not only excellent in corrosion resistance at high temperatures, but also have good wear resistance due to the formation of Cr3Si phase, therefore they are promising as metallic coating materials. Aluminum is often added to Cr-Si alloys to improve the oxidation resistance through which stable alumina surface film is formed. On the other hand, due to the addition of aluminum, various Al-containing phases may be formed and may negatively affect the heat resistance of the Cr-Si-Al alloys, so detailed investigation is required. In this study, two Cr-Si-Al alloys (high-Si & high-Al) were prepared in the form of cast ingots through a vacuum arc melting process and the microstructural changes after high temperature heating process were investigated. In the case of the cast high-Si alloy, a considerable amount of Cr3Si phase was formed, and its hardness was significantly higher than that of the cast high-Al alloy. Also, Al-rich phases (with the high Al/Cr ratio) were not found much compared to the high-Al alloy. Meanwhile, it was observed that the amount of the Al-rich phases reduced by the annealing heat treatment for both alloys. In the case of the high temperature heating at 1,400 ℃, no significant microstructural change was observed in the high Si alloy, but a little more coarse and segregated AlCr phases were found in the high Al alloy compared to the cast state.
This research presents tetrahedral amorphous (ta-C) coating on the artificial tooth for improving the durability and functionality (esthtics, foreign body of tooth) by filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA). A differentiated coating method is required for a ta-C coating on polymer owing to the low melting point of the polymer, inter-facial adhesion, low friction, and non-conductivity. Herein, ta-C coating is applied below 50℃, and the potential difference of the carbon plasma drawn to the substrate was controlled by applying a positive duct bias voltage without using a substrate bias voltage. Consequently, the ta-C coating with a thickness of 70nm using the duct bias condition of 20V with the highest plasma intensity satisfies the esthetics of the artificial tooth and had a 5B level of inter-facial adhesion. In addition, the composite hardness of ta-C/polymer is 380 MPa, and correlations with esthetics, sp3 bonding, and mechanical properties. The friction coefficient (CoF) of the ta-C coating in a water-lubricated environment is 0.07, showing a six-fold reduction in CoF compared with that of a polymer.
