  • This paper described an improved technical method required for proper evaluation of personnel exposures by means of the photographic dosimeter developed by KAERI in lower gamma or X-ray energy regions, with which response of the dosimeter varies significantly. With calibration of the dosimeter in the energy range from 30 to 300 keV, the beam spectrum was carefully selected and specified it adequately. The absorber combinations and absorber thickness used to obtain the specified X-ray spectra from a constant potential X-ray machine were determined theoretically and also experimentally. A correlation between the density and exposure for the four separate energies, such as $49\;keV_{eff},\;154\;keV_{eff}\;250\;keV_{eff}\;and\;662\;keV$, is experimentally determined. As a result, it can be directly evaluated the exposure from the measured response of dosimeter.

  • In diagnostic medical imaging, it is essential to reduce the scattered radiation for the high medical image quality and low patient dose. Therefore, in this study, the influence of the scattered radiation on medical images was analyzed as the tube voltage increases. For this purpose, ANSI chest phantom was used to measure the scattering ratio, and the scattering effect on the image quality was investigated by RMS evaluation, RSD and NPS analysis. It was found that the scattering ratio with increasing x-ray tube voltage gradually increased to 48.8% at 73 kV tube voltage and to 80.1% at 93 kV tube voltage. As a result of RMS analysis for evaluating the image quality, RMS value according to increase of tube voltage was increased, resulting in low image quality. Also, the NPS value at 2.5 lp/mm spatial frequency was increased by 20% when the tube voltage was increased by 93 kV compared to the tube voltage of 73 kV. From this study, it can be seen that the scattering radiation have a significant effect on the image quality according to the increase of x-ray tube voltage. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the improvement of medical imaging quality.

  • In this study, a scintillation detector was fabricated using a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) and a Ce:GAGG scintillator single crystal, and its spectroscopic properties were compared with those of commercially available LYSO and CsI:Tl scintillators using ${\gamma}$-ray spectroscopy. The energy resolutions of the self-produced scintillation detector composed of the scintillator single crystal (volume: $3{\times}3{\times}20mm^3$) and SiPM (Photosensitive area: $3{\times}3mm^2$) for standard ${\gamma}$-ray sources, such as $^{133}Ba$, $^{22}Na$, $^{137}Cs$ and $^{60}Co$ were measured and compared. As a result, the energy resolutions of the proposed Ce:GAGG scintillation detector for g-rays, as measured using its spectroscopic properties, were found to be 13.5% for $^{133}Ba$ 0.356 MeV, 6.9% for $^{22}Na$ 0.511 MeV, 5.8% for $^{137}Cs$ 0.662 MeV and 2.3% for $^{60}Co$ 1.33 MeV.

  • We use the non-stationary three dimensional two-layer outer gap model to explain gamma-ray emissions from a pulsar magnetosphere. We found out that for some pulsars like the Geminga pulsar, it was hard to explain emissions above a level of around 1 GeV. We then developed the model into a non-stationary model. In this model we assigned a power-law distribution to one or more of the spectral parameters proposed in the previous model and calculated the weighted phase-averaged spectrum. Though this model is suitable for some pulsars, it still cannot explain the high energy emission of the Geminga pulsar. An Inverse-Compton Scattering component between the primary particles and the radio photons in the outer magnetosphere was introduced into the model, and this component produced a sufficient number of GeV photons in the spectrum of the Geminga pulsar.

  • We have calculated the cosmic ray(CR) acceleration at young remnants from Type Ia supernovae expanding into a uniform interstellar medium(ISM). Adopting quasi-parallel magnetic fields, gasdynamic equations and the diffusion convection equation for the particle distribution function are solved in a comoving spherical grid which expands with the shock. Bohm-type diffusion due to self-excited $Alfv\acute{e}n$ waves, drift and dissipation of these waves in the precursor and thermal leakage injection were included. With magnetic fields amplified by the CR streaming instability, the particle energy can reach up to $10^{16}Z$ eV at young supernova remnants(SNRs) of several thousand years old. The fraction of the explosion energy transferred to the CR component asymptotes to 40-50 % by that time. For a typical SNR in a warm ISM, the accelerated CR energy spectrum should exhibit a concave curvature with the power-law slope flattening from 2 to 1.6 at $E{\gtrsim}0.1$ TeV.

  • We present analysis results of Korean VLBI Network (KVN) four-band data for the highly variable blazar 3C 279. We measured the 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz flux densities and spectral indices of the source using contemporaneous data taken over 5.6 years. We used the discrete correlation function to investigate correlations between the radio emission properties and those measured in the optical (2 × 1014 - 1.5 × 1015 Hz), X-ray (0.3-10 keV), and gamma-ray (0.1-300 GeV) bands. We found a significant correlation between the radio spectral index and gamma-ray flux without a time delay and interpreted the correlation using an extended jet scenario for blazar emission.

  • In this study, we investigated the effect of a nitrogen atom on the amorphization of V-Fe alloy through solid-gas reaction during mechanical alloying (MA). MA by planetary ball mill of $V_{70}Fe_{30}$ elemental powders was carried out under the nitrogen gas atmosphere. Amorphization has been observed after 160 hours of ball milling in this case. The DSC spectrum for the mechanically alloyed ($V_{70}Fe$_{30}$)_{0.89}N_{0.11}$ powders exhibits a sharp exothermic peak due to crystallization at about $600^{\circ}C$. Structural transformation from the bcc crystalline to amorphous states was also observed through X-ray and neutron diffractions. We take a full advantage of a negligibly small scattering length of the V atom in the neutron diffraction measurement. During amorphization process the octahedral unit, which is typical of a polyhedron formed in any crystal structures, was preferentially destroyed and transformed into the tetrahedral unit. Futhermore, neutron diffraction measurements revealed that a nitrogen atom is selectively situated at a center of the polyhedron formed by V atoms.

  • This paper explored the effect of deposition conditions on the characteristics of copper oxide (CuOx) thin films prepared by direct current (DC) magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction exhibited that CuO with n-type conductivity was the main composition regardless of the DC magnetron sputtering power whereas the phase transition from n-type CuO to p-type Cu2O was observed with decreasing the oxygen pressure (OP) from 40 to 20%. The optical band gap ranges of 1.6-1.9 eV, which are characteristic of n-type CuO, were determined for samples prepared with OPs of 30-40% while the optical band gap of 2.3 eV, which is characteristic of p-type Cu2O, was measured for samples prepared with an OP of 20%. In addition, only Cu+ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) peak at the ~932.6 eV position exists in the films deposited with an OP of 20%, whereas only Cu2+ XPS peaks at ~934.2 eV and in the range of 940-945 eV are observed in the films deposited with an OP of 40%. Furthermore, as a result of XPS depth profile analysis, it was confirmed that the composition ratio of the sample prepared at an OP of 20% was Cu2O, whereas the composition ratio of the sample prepared at an OP of 40% was CuO. These suggest that the CuOx thin films could be constantly converted from n-type CuO to p-type Cu2O by decreasing the oxygen partial pressure. Thin film transistors with Cu2O deposited at 20% OP revealed p-type characteristics such as onset voltage (VON) of -3 V, saturated hole mobility of 8 cm2/Vs at VGS = -28 V, subthreshold swing of 0.86 V/decade at VGS-VON = -0.5 V, and on/off ratio of 1.14 × 103.
