  • The Asian cultural landscape is a mirrored ecosystem of great complexity, formed by the interaction of man and nature, coupled with a host of ecological processes. The human dependencies on and environmental adaptation of the bio-organisms and the surrounding landscape constitute the typical cultural landscape. Islands are a good example of a cultural landscape, and each mosaic pattern of marine and coastal ecosystems reflects bio-cultural diversity. Along with land-use patterns, wise use of biological organisms and indigenous knowledge has expanded to islands in the Asia-Pacific region in several ways (sea current and human impact, etc.). Loss in biodiversity and landscape diversity as well as cultural diversity owing to global warming and rapid urbanization are emerging issues for island ecosystems all over the world. In order to sustain the historical coexistence between man and natural systems, we ecologists must continue to search for a holistic solution for academic consilience. In this paper, I present the vision and practical characteristics of island ecology with a view toward the conservation of the traditional landscape and bio-cultural diversities in the seascape.

  • The bit error rates of DS/SSMA DPSK system with diversity and FEC channel coding in Rayleigh fading and log-normal shadowing channel are evaluated. Microscopic postdetection diversity and macroscopic selection diversiity are used to mitigate the effects of Rayleigh fading and log-normal shadowing, respectively. The numerical results show that the composite use of diversity and channel coding is very efficient for improving system performance compared to their respective uses.

  • The present study analyzes the diversity and usage of NTFPs and evaluates their importance in the day to day life of the people of rural Meghalaya. People use 172 NTFPs belonging to 139 plant species mainly for food, medicine and fuelwood and to a lesser extent for construction, handicrafts and ornamental purpose. These 139 plants belonged to 117 genera and 70 families with Rosaceae, Poaceae and Fagaceae families as the dominant NTFP yielding families. Fruits from shrubs and trees are most commonly harvested by people. Collection and availability of NTFPs for use as food are more during the summer season, which is also the period with least availability of job. NTFPs for subsistence use are greater in number than those having commercial value. The most commonly harvested plant parts are fruits and leaves. Roots, rhizomes and whole plants are extracted in lesser quantity which is a positive approach from sustainability point of view. NTFPs and other forest products also form a vital part of the rural household's income generation activities.

  • Zoning has long been criticized for its negative effects and has been taken for granted that zoning works as a hurdle to urban diversity. Responses in the US have emphasized more fine-grained zoning approaches that plan mixed use. This paper introduces and evaluates Seoul's zoning system as a possible alternative. While US zoning regulations have relied on distinguishing ever larger numbers of land use zoning categories, Seoul has opted to integrate new land uses into existing classifications, allowing for greater flexibility of use in each zone. Using municipal building records to evaluate land use in three mid-density residential districts, this paper demonstrates that Seoul's flexible zoning is capable of producing diverse mixed use neighborhoods. It then highlights the potential downside of this approach, showing that flexibility allows for the commercialization and sectoral gentrification of residential districts. It concludes by suggesting that a combination of flexible zones and more fine-grained plans would capture the advantages of both US and Korean planning.

  • This paper compares the performances with space time coding and cyclic delay diversity techniques for OFDM systems in interference-limited environments. While a communication system usually use a diversity technique to improve its own performance, it is also necessary to consider the interference effects to other users as well if the system is operated in interference-limited environments. When there is no interference from or to other users, space time coding technique results in better performance than cyclic delay diversity. However, cyclic delay diversity can be better than space time coding if interferences to other users are considered.

  • We consider the use of cooperative diversity in a multiuser wireless data network. This paper provides an analysis of the interaction between cooperative diversity and multiuser diversity on downlink channels. By using approximation of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution of each cooperative diversity link by Gamma distribution, an analytic expression is derived for the average throughput of a single-cell wireless system with multiple cooperative diversity links combined with a fair-access scheduler. The proposed analytic approach is verified through comparisons with simulated results and shows that cooperative diversity makes the detrimental impacts on multiuser diversity.

  • In this paper, we consider the use of orthogonal multiple beams (OMBs) to simultaneously achieve multi-user diversity and multiplexing gain in a packet-based wireless system. Previous OMB scheme considers the use of a fixed number of multiple beams equal to the number of transmit antennas. However, unless the number of active users is sufficiently large, the use of a fixed number of multiple beams may not provide desired performance due to the interference signal transmitted through other beams, being even worse than the use of a single beam. To alleviate this problem, we consider the adjustment of the number of beams in use to maximize the spectral efficiency according to the operating condition. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • This paper deals with the viewer's recognition of diversity on digital media services. For this reason, the researcher focused on the IPTV user, how the perception of the diversity of the digital media service affected the user's satisfaction. The results are as follows. First, digital media service user recognized that supply side diversity of media channel and VOD affect recognition of accessibility (easy of use) and perceived playfulness. Second user recognized that variety of performers and actors affect recognition of accessibility and perceived playfulness. Moreover, it was found that recognition of accessibility, actor's diversity, perceived playfulness affect use's recognition for media player's contribution of diversity, and media satisfaction. As in this paper, the researcher expects that this kind of methodology for confirming of user's recognition of diversity will contribute to preparing a future media policy.

  • In any crop breeding program Selection and use of genetically diverse genotypes to develop cultivars with a broad genetic base is important. Molecular markers play a major role in selecting diverse genotypes. Molecular breeding programs of the crop can be made more efficient by use of molecular markers. The present study was done with an aim of analyzing genetic diversity and the population structure in 24 accessions of sunflower (Helianthus annus L.) from Kenya genetic diversity using 35 EST-SSR and gSSR primers.Out of the 35 markers 3 were not polymorphic as they indicated Polymorphic Information content( PIC) of value 0.00 and so the data analysis was done using 32 markers . The 32 set of markers used produced 29 alleles ranging from 2 to 7with a mean of 3.0 alleles per locus. The average value of polymorphic information contents(PIC) were 0.3 .Genetic diversity analysis using these markers revealed 3 major clusters. This result could be useful for designing strategies to make elite hybrid and inbreeding of crossing block for breeding and future molecular breeding programs to make elite variety.
