Urban Thermo-profiles and Community Structure of Quercus mongolica Forests along an Urban-rural Land Use Gradient: Implications for Management and Restoration of Urban Ecosystems

  • Land cover changes associated with urbanization have driven climate change and pollution, which alter properties of ecosystems at local, regional, and continental scales. Thus, the relationships among urban ecological variables such as community composition, structure, health, soil and functioning need to be better understood to restore and improve urban ecosystems. In this study, we discuss urban ecosystem management and research from a futuristic perspective based on analyses of vegetation structure, composition, and successional trends, as well as the chemical properties of soils and the distribution of heat along an urban-rural gradient. Urban thermo-profile analysis using satellite images showed an obvious mitigating effect of vegetation on the Seoul heat island. Community attributes of Quercus mongolica stands reflected the effects of urbanization, such as pronounced increases in disturbance-related and pollution-tolerant species, such as Styrax japonica and Sorbus alnifolia. Retrogressive successional trends were detected in urban sites relative to those in rural sites. Changes in the urban climate and biotic environment have the potential to significantly influence the practice and outcomes of ecological management, restoration and forecasting because of the associated changes in future bio-physical settings. Thus, for management (i.e., creation and restoration) of urban green spaces, forward-thinking perspectives supported by historical information are necessary.

농장형 도시농업 활동 특성 유형화 및 선호 분석 (Segmentation and Preference Analysis of Urban Farming Patterns)

  • The purpose of this study is to segment urban farming patterns and analyse the preference on urban farming by applying two-step cluster analysis, chi-square analysis and ANOVA. The data was collected by face-to-face surveys on 9 urban farms which were chosen by location and operator. Respondents were asked to describe their urban farming pattern, preference on urban farming and socio-demographic characteristics. Three different clusters were derived from two-step cluster analysis based on operator, transportation, number of visits per month, travel time, area and motive. They were 'hobby-oriented farming', 'producing-oriented farming', and 'multipurpose farming'. The results of chi-square analysis showed that there were significant differences among these three segmented groups in terms of age, with or without children aged under 14, household income per month and housing type. In other words, there is quite a possibility that urbanites have different urban farming patterns according to their socio-demographic profiles. Also, there were significant differences on the preference on urban farming by cluster. According to the results, planning directions of urban farming were presented.

The Development of Extended Urban Land Information System for Sustainable Urban Management

  • This study aims to develop the Extended Urban Land Information System (EULIS) which can support the sustainable urban management. Although the existing Urban Land Use Information system (ULUIS) that aids the micro-level land use information is a good means for the understanding of urban spatial structure and district-level planning and management (such as urban design, redevelopment planning and district-level transportation planning, etc.), it has some limitations in supplying the information for sustainable urban management, such as environmental and traffic analysis, urban infrastructure's carrying capacity analysis, etc. The EULIS is designed to efficiently supply the information for sustainable urban management. For the successful construction of EULIS, the followings have to be considered. 1) the integration of topographic maps which contain the building's footprints and cadastral maps which contain the parcel's boundary, 2) the integration of EULIS and FM (Facility Management) system for the full utilization of information about capacity analysis of infrastructure, 3) the construction of standardized georeferencing system and spatial unit for the combined use of environment and traffic census data. This study shows 1) why EULIS is needed for the sustainable urban management and which elements are needed for the system,2) the E-R data model for the EULIS, 3) the strategies for the construction of EULIS and 4) the conclusion.

Metabolic Syndrome and Its Related Factors among Korean Elderly in Urban and Rural Areas

  • The accelerated aging population may lead to the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and increase in medical costs as well. The aim of this study is to investigate the association with prevalence of metabolic abnormalities and its components in urban/rural area among Korean elderly. We examined the association between metabolic abnormalities and urban/rural area with data from the 2009 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The subjects were 1,622 elderly aged 65 years or over. The sixty percent of Korean elderly reside in urban and 40 % in rural. Rural residents were significantly lower income and less educated than urban residents. But there was no significant different in nutritional factors. They showed significantly 26% lower likelihood of having metabolic syndrome (0.578-0.950, p=0.018) compared with urban residents. Urban residents were associated with higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome than rural residents. This results will contribute to develop strategy for prevention metabolic syndrome for Korean elderly according to urban/rural area.

  • This study suggested an improved algorithm of urban energy consumption estimation on the urban planning stage which concerns calculation accuracy. The results are as follows. (1) Urban energy consumption was estimated and managed per unit space using E-GIS DB which contains facility information per mesh. (2) Urban energy consumption was reflected by the urban facility classified and standardized by the characteristics of energy use. (3) Calculation accuracy of energy consumption was approached by separately suggested as summer algorithm reflecting urban heat island on summer energy use and winter algorithm reflecting heating system normally used in Korea.

  • Urban agriculture is drawing people's attention along with environmental problems and recent changes in population and society such as the expansion of the aged, and various related discussions are going on for expanding the base. The purpose of this study was to suggest the application of urban agriculture in the permanently rental apartment complex to build a social welfare. Aiming at the introduction of urban agriculture in permanently rental apartment complexes, this study presented the roles and necessities of urban agriculture in response to environmental changes at home and overseas, explained the current state of permanently leased apartment complexes, estimated the land area usable for urban agriculture in existing complexes, and proposed strategies for the introduction of urban agriculture.

  • Kyoto, which was Japan's political and cultural capital for more than a millennium before the dawn of the modern era, shows distinctive characteristics formed in the process of urban modernization. A citizen plaza perfectly fit to a modern city is lying on the east side, but a delayed urban reconstruction in the city center due to a strong conservative self-government awareness, as well as a delayed modernization of tax system, caused disorderly urban sprawl to appear in the suburbs. Thanks to the enactment of urban planning law enacted in 1919 by the government (Ministry of Internal Affairs) and an increasing awareness about the necessity and rationality of urban planning projects, urban renovation took place at a rapid pace. In the meantime, new ways of urban design were sought for and experimented to conserve it as a historical city against the city' quickly changing landscape.

도시농업활동 프로그램 개발을 위한 요구 분석 (Needs Assessment for Urban Agricultural Program)

  • The purpose of the study was to identify the needs assessment for urban agricultural program. The findings were as follows; Citizens at urban cities said that educational program of 'shortage of farming technology education' should be developed, and wanted to be given 'farming technology' of urban agriculture education area more than other education areas. The citizens asked for urban agricultural program with both theories and practice education than existing urban agricultural program that relied upon basic theory education. And, they wanted urban agricultural program that was based on 'farming technology' to consist of practice education and theory education at the ratio of 80 and 20 and to be professional and differentiated. The citizens preferred 3 to 6 months of education period the most, and more than 95 percent of them wanted to join the program when it is developed.

  • This study aimed at framing alternative urban planning scenarios reflecting urban planning factors, performing urban climate simulation and evaluating eco-friend and low energy characteristics of each scenario on the viewpoint of urban temperature and energy savings on the target of the costal city including Haeundae District in Busan The results are as follows. 1)The fact that urban higher temperature is approximately 2.5 times higher in the building constructed area than whole urban area was represented severe higher temperature phenomenon in the built-up area. Ground greening, water scenario and soil scenario could be expected peek air temperature alleviating effect in order. Especially water scenario had significant effect(maximum $2.5^{\circ}C$) on lowering of air temperature.

Numerical study on the gaseous radioactive pollutant dispersion in urban area from the upstream wind: Impact of the urban morphology

  • The radioactive pollutant could migrate to the downstream urban area under the action of atmospheric dispersion due to the turbulent mixing under actual pollution accidents. A scenario in which radioactive contaminants from the upstream (for example, a nearshore nuclear power plant accident) migrates to the downstream urban blocks have been considered in this study. Numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are then conducted to investigate the effects of the urban morphology (building packing density and layout) on the atmospheric dispersion of radioactive pollutants in this scenario. The building packing density and structure can significantly affect urban areas' mean flow pattern and the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). The flow pattern and the TKE distribution influence the radioactive pollution dispersion. It is found that the radioactive pollution at the urban canyons is significantly affected by the vertical transport at the canyon. A comparison of the distributions of radioactive and traditional non-radioactive pollutants is also provided.
