  • This article describes the major themes to change in historical and philosophical perspectives of science education that lead the US and Korean science curriculum reform movements since 1957. Inquiry teaching and criticism of teaching science as inquiry in the late 1950s and the 1960s, Science-Technology-Society (STS) Curricula, and Science Literacy and the 1980s science literacy crisis are discussed. In the US, three major curricular projects as responses to the scientific literacy crisis are exemplary such as the Project 2061 sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Project on Scope, Sequence, and Coordination (SS&C) initiated by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), and the National Science Education Standards (NSES) published by the National Research Council. To identify how each set of national content standards differ, we compared specific content standards related to the theory of plate tectonics in Earth and Space science in grades 9-12 over the three national standards: Benchmarks of AAAS, NSES of the NRC, and SS&C of the NSTA. Against this historical background of the US science education reform movements, the curriculum reform movements in Korea is briefly discussed. In general, Korean science curriculum reform movements have reflected and resembled the recommendations of the US reform movements. In addition, it is important to note that throughout the history of curriculum revision in Korea, there have been continuing pendulum swings between a theoretical, discipline-centered curriculum and a liberal, humanistic, and student-centered curriculum, which pays more attention to students in terms of their interest and psychological preparedness. In conclusion, the sixth and seventh national science curriculum revisions reflect rather a student-centered movement by reducing technical and sophisticated topics, taking constructivism learning theory into consideration, and adding more STS related topics.

  • Pupils with learning impediments in elementary schools have difficulties in learning numerical calculations. Numerical concepts, the basis of numerical calculations, require repetitious exercises, and it has been widely reported that computer-mediated learning motivates the learners to concentrate on their learning for longer hours. The aim of the research is to develop and apply a Web-based courseware to experimental groups to improve learning numerical concepts of the learners with learning difficulties in elementary school and to discuss the effects of the results. The courseware is designed to improve the numerical concepts of the learners through many thought activities. The experiment shows effectiveness of the learning activities to improve learning numerical concepts for students with learning difficulties, categorized into two groups - an experimental group and a control group, and also it shows positive responses on improvement of their calculation ability.

  • This essay examines the relationship between death and the minor literature and the minor philosophy of education. Deleuze and Guattari conceive death as the source of question and the problem. Death overcomes Freud's death-drive and is conceived as the universal event. Then, death is understood as the essential problem, the condition of thought about life, and the paradox of actuality. On the other hand, their minor literature is able to figure in Kafka's works, Metamorphosis and so on, excellently. Deleuze and Guattari argue that Kafka's works push ahead to the edge of the deterritorization. Their argument on the minor literature has the following three characteristics: first, the territorization of the language; second, the directional connection between the individual and the social; third, the collective arrangement of the statement. Death and the minor literature share the "intensity" as the theoretical tool and thus presuppose each other. From this, we are able to draw the possibility of the minor philosophy of education. It makes a crack on the major philosophy of education, exposing the limitation of the doctrines. In other words, the major philosophy of education enforces the reading of grand philosophers by the defined ways only. Instead, Deleuze and Guattari show the creative way through their research of the history of philosophy and extend the field of thought. In following this way, we can repeat the novel in the philosophy of education also. In this essay, we examine their "affect" for the possibility.

  • In the SW education of non-majors who encounter liberal arts education experience difficulties in the SW development environment and understanding they encounter for the first time, relevance to their major, and convergence thinking ability. In order to compensate for the difficulties of non-major learners in liberal arts education, a relatively easily accessible software was used to utilize a demonstration-oriented model that can be applied to beginners in SW education. In order to understand the logical flow of applications and problem solving used in real life, we proposed a convergence SW teaching method that combines repeated implementation through demonstration by the instructor and imitation of the learner, and learning indicators to increase the learning satisfaction and achievement of the learner. In the experiment applying the teaching and learning method proposed in this paper, meaningful results were shown when evaluating the learning effect, academic achievement, learning satisfaction, and teaching and learning method aspects of SW education.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relative importance of preliminary physical education teachers between upper and lower levels. Therefore, after literature analysis and examination by experts, a model of competence should be developed by preliminary physical education teachers. Literature review was done at first to filter out the related factors from previous studies. analytic hierarchy process (AHP) was followed with other 23 experts. Results of the study is as follows: Competence for Personal Relations is placed at the top with the weight of .213, competence for Self Management follows with the weight of .203, competence for Major is placed at third with the weight of .174, competence for Studies & Liberal follows with the weight of .163, and competence for Sense of Challenge is placed with the weight of .137, competence for Creativity follows with the weight of .110.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of nutrition education on nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, and food behavior of college students. The subjects of this study were 350 college students attending a university. The education group students received nutrition education three hours per week during a 4-week period offered in a 'Home Economics' course. A total of 150 students in the education group and 200 students in the non-education group completed pre-test questionaires examining nutrition knowledge, dietary attitudes, and food behaviors. Major findings were as follows : nutrition knowledge, and food behavior of the education group were improved compared to the non-education group. But significant changes were not observed in dietary attitudes in the education group. There were higher correlations between nutrition knowledge and dietary attitudes score, and between dietary attitudes and food behavior score at the posttest than those at the pretest. These results suggest that nutrition education for college students can effectively improve their nutrition knowledge and food behaviors.
