  • In this paper, we construct a Gorenstein Artinian algebra R/J with non-unimodal Hilbert function h = (1, 13, 12, 13, 1) to investigate the algebraic structure of the ideal J in a polynomial ring R. For this purpose, we use a software system Macaulay 2, which is devoted to supporting research in algebraic geometry and commutative algebra.

  • In [9], the authors determine an infinite class of non-unimodal Gorenstein sequence, which includes the example $$\bar{h}_1\text{ = (1, 125, 95, 77, 71, 77, 95, 125, 1)}$$. They raise a question whether there is a Gorenstein algebra with Hilbert function $$\bar{h}_2\text{= (1, 125, 95, 77, 70, 77, 95, 125, 1)}$$, which has remained an open question. In this paper, we prove that there is no Gorenstein algebra with Hilbert function $\bar{h}_2$.

  • Kang and Ko introduced a skew-symmetrizable matrix to describe a structure theorem for complete intersections of grade 4. Let $R=k[w_0,\;w_1,\;w_2,\;{\ldots},\;w_m]$ be the polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field k with indetermiantes $w_l$ and deg $w_l=1$, and $I_i$ a homogeneous perfect ideal of grade 3 with type $t_i$ defined by a skew-symmetrizable matrix $G_i(1{\leq}t_i{\leq}4)$. We show that for m = 2 the Hilbert function of the zero dimensional standard k-algebra $R/I_i$ is determined by CI-sequences and a Gorenstein sequence. As an application of this result we show that for i = 1, 2, 3 and for m = 3 a Gorenstein sequence $h(R/H_i)=(1,\;4,\;h_2,\;{\ldots},\;h_s)$ is unimodal, where $H_i$ is the sum of homogeneous perfect ideals $I_i$ and $J_i$ which are geometrically linked by a homogeneous regular sequence z in $I_i{\cap}J_i$.

  • In [4], the authors showed that if an h-vector (h0, h1, …, he) with h1 = 4e - 4 and hi ≤ h1 is a Gorenstein sequence, then h1 = hi for every 1 ≤ i ≤ e - 1 and e ≥ 6. In this paper, we show that if an h-vector (h0, h1, …, he) with h1 = 4e - 4, h2 = 4e - 3, and hi ≤ h2 is a Gorenstein sequence, then h2 = hi for every 2 ≤ i ≤ e - 2 and e ≥ 7. We also propose an open question that if an h-vector (h0, h1, …, he) with h1 = 4e - 4, 4e - 3 < h2 ≤ (h1)(1)|+1+1, and h2 ≤ hi is a Gorenstein sequence, then h2 = hi for every 2 ≤ i ≤ e - 2 and e ≥ 6.
