  • Based on third-order shear deformation shell theory, the present paper investigates post-buckling properties of eccentrically stiffened metal foam curved shells/panels having initial geometric imperfectness. Metal foam is considered as porous material with uniform and non-uniform models. The single-curve porous shell is subjected to in-plane compressive loads leading to post-critical stability in nonlinear regime. Via an analytical trend and employing Airy stress function, the nonlinear governing equations have been solved for calculating the post-buckling loads of stiffened geometrically imperfect metal foam curved shell. New findings display the emphasis of porosity distributions, geometrical imperfectness, foundation factors, stiffeners and geometrical parameters on post-buckling properties of porous curved shells/panels.

  • This paper presents the effects of dynamic response of the railway bridge through the suspension system when the train is moving with uniform speed and non-uniform speed Railway bridges are subjected to dynamic loads generated by the interaction between moving vehicles and the bridge structures. these dynamic loads result in response fluctuation in bridge members. To investigate the real dynamic behavior of the bridge, a number of analytical and experimental investigation should be carried out. This paper, a train/bridge interaction analysis program considerate braking action. New scheme consideration of braking action on the bridge using speed-dependent braking function is presented. This program also used torsional degree of freedom and constraint equation based on geometrical relationship in order to take into consideration three-dimensional eccentricity effect due to the operation on double track through quasi three-dimensional analysis.

  • A higher order analytical solution for static analysis of a truncated conical composite sandwich panel subjected to different loading conditions was presented in this paper which was based on a new improved higher order sandwich panel theory. Bending analysis of sandwich structures with flexible cores subjected to concentrated load, uniform distributed load on a patch, harmonic and uniform distributed loads on the top and/or bottom face sheet of the sandwich structure was also investigated. For the first time, bending analysis of truncated conical composite sandwich panels with flexible cores was performed. The governing equations were derived by principle of minimum potential energy. The first order shear deformation theory was used for the composite face sheets and for the core while assuming a polynomial description of the displacement fields. Also, the in-plane hoop stresses of the core were considered. In order to assure accuracy of the present formulations, convergence of the results was examined. Effects of types of boundary conditions, types of applied loads, conical angles and fiber angles on bending analysis of truncated conical composite sandwich panels were studied. As, there is no research on higher order bending analysis of conical sandwich panels with flexible cores, the results were validated by ABAQUS FE code. The present approach can be linked with the standard optimization programs and it can be used in the iteration process of the structural optimization. The proposed approach facilitates investigation of the effect of physical and geometrical parameters on the bending response of sandwich composite structures.

  • This paper deals with dynamic instability of slender rocket-propelled flying bodies, such as launch vehicle and advances missiles subjected to aerodynamic loads and an end rocket thrust. A flying body is simplified into a uniform free-free beam subjected to an end follower thrust. Two types of aerodynamic loads are assumed in the stability analysis. Firstly, it is assumed that two concentrated aerodynamic loads act on the flying body at its nose and tail. Secondly, to take account of effect of unsteady flow due to motion of a flexible flying body, aerodynamic load is estimated by the slender body approximation. Extended Hamilton's principle is applied to the considered beam for deriving the equation of motion. Application of FEM yields standardeigen-value problem. Dynamic stability of the beam is determined by the sign of the real part of the complex eigen-values. If aerodynamic loads are concentrated loads that act on the flying body at its nose and tail, the flutter thrust decreases by about 10% in comparison with the flutter thrust of free-free beam subjected only to an end follower thrust. If aerodynamic loads are distributed along the longitudinal axis of the flying body, the flutter thrust decreases by about 70% in comparison with the flutter thrust of free-free beam under an end follower thrust. It is found that the flutter thrust is reduced considerably if the aerodynamic loads are taken into account in addition to an end rocket thrust in the stability analysis of slender rocket-propelled flying bodies.

  • The existence of a dam has potential effects on the surrounding wind environment especially when it is located in mountainous areas. In this situation, the long-span bridge over the reservoir can easily be exposed to non-uniform incoming flows, affecting its wind-resistance performance. This paper presents a study on the aerostatic stability of such a bridge. Wind tunnel tests were first carried out to investigate the wind environment above a mountainous reservoir. The results show that the angle of attack and the wind speed along the bridge axis show obvious non-uniform characteristics, which is related to the inflow direction. When winds come from the south where the river is winding, the angle of attack varies along the span direction significantly. The finite element model for the bridge was established using ANSYS software, and effects of non-uniform wind loads on the aerostatic stability were computed. Non-uniform angle of attack and wind speed are unfavorable to the aerostatic stability of the bridge, especially the former. When the combined action of non-uniform angle of attack and wind speed is considered, the critical wind speed of aerostatic instability is further reduced. Moreover, the aerostatic stability of the bridge is closely related to the dam height.

  • Exact solutions for stresses for an infinite rectangular plate perforated by two circular holes of different radii subjected to uni-axial or bi-axial uniform loads are investigated using the Airy stress function. The hoop stresses occurring at the edge of the circular hole are computed and plotted. Comparisons are made for the stress concentration factors for several types of loading conditions.

  • A numerical procedure for the analysis of slender arch buckling problems for uniform dead weight is presented in this paper. Such loading changes in the arch profile. The problem is nonlinear. The numerical procedure is limited to an inextensible analysis and to elastic behavior. Based upon a numerical integration technique developed by Newmark for straight beams, a large deflection bending analysis is combined with small deflection buckling routines to formulate the numerical procedure. The numerical procedure is composed of a combination of the numerical integration and successive approximations procedure. The results obtained in this study are as follows : 1.The critical loads obtained in this study coincide with the results by Austin so that the algorithm developed in this study is verified. 2.The numerical results are converged with good precision when the half arch is divided into 10 segments in both Prime and Quadratic section. 3.The critical loads are decreased as the ratios of rise versus span are increased. 4.The critical loads are increased as the moments of inertia at the ends are increased. 5.The critical loads of Prime section are larger than that of Quadratic section under the same profile conditions.

  • A simple matrix method to analyze the ship's transverse frame ring is proposed. In this approach, the frame ring is treated as a plane frame of uniform slender members. The loadings on the frame consist of buoyancy loads, deck loads and cargo loads. The hatch coaming are considered to deflect under the loads. Because of symmetry, only the half of the frame is analyzed. The method is to obtain the forces and moments on each member. The deformation of the frame can be determined from the nodal displacements. For a sample calculation, a frame ring of a 10,000 ton class cargo liner is analyzed on the IBM 1130 computer. The numerical results obtained are proved to be resonable.

  • The structural behaviors under wheel loads are much different from those under uniform loads which are generally adopted for the design of parking garage. In such a viewpoint, the structural behavior of a Half-PC concrete underground parking garage under wheel loads was investigated using the site instrumentations. The static wheel loads were applied on the structure to evaluate the actual static resistance, and moving load tests were also performed to evaluate the impact factors of the structure. Besides, the impact tests were also conducted to estimate the modal parameters of the structure. Through the experimental investigations, it was found that the structural performance of the underground parking garage can be improved by use of structural type such as Half-PC concrete structures.

  • Buckling analysis of shape memory alloy (SMA) rectangular plates subjected to uniform and linearly distributed inplane loads is the main objective in the present paper. Brinson's model is developed to express the constitutive characteristics of SMA plate. Using the classical plate theory and variational approach, stability equations are derived. In addition to external inplane mechanical loads, the plate is subjected to the pre-stresses caused by the recovery stresses that are generated during martensitic phase transformation. Ritz method is used for solving the governing stability equations. Finally, the effects of conditions on the edges, thickness, aspect ratio, temperature and pre-strains on the critical buckling loads of SMA plate are investigated in details.
