  • Cone factors, $N_{kt}$, $N_{ke}$ and $N_{{\Delta}u}$, for estimating undrained shear strength of Busan clay are evaluated in this study. For this, CPTu and field vane tests are performed for clay layers at two sites, Busan new-port and Noksan, and also $CK_0U$ triaxial tests with undisturbed samples taken from the same site are carried out. From experimental results, it is observed that the undrained shear strengths of clay increases with depth, and the undrained shear strength obtained from triaxial tests is 1.5 times higher than one obtained from vane tests. The normalized undrained shear strengths of Busan clay from triaxial and vane shear tests are $0.26{\sim}0.44$ and $0.20{\sim}0.23$, respectively. In CPTu results, cone tip resistance ($q_c$) and pore pressure ($u_2$) linearly increase with depth, and the pore pressure ratio ($B_q$) of Busan clay is within the range of $0.3{\sim}1.0$. The cone factors, which are determined by comparing the CPTu results with $CK_0U$ triaxial and vane shear test results, are found to be $5{\sim}20$ and $10{\sim}35$, respectively. It is also observed that the cone factors are inversely proportional to the pore pressure ratio. From this, the prediction methods for evaluating the cone factors of Busan clay are developed.

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests with 50 g gravitational condition were performed to evaluate the bearing capacity of very soft ground, improved by spreading geotextile and sand on the surface of ground, for the heavy machinery to be able to access. For undrained shear strength of ground model, prepared with the clay sampled from the field, being in the range of 3.1~11.7 kPa, bearing capacity tests were performed with the model footing and the loading system built to simulate the heavy machinery on the ground model treated with geotextile and sand. Test results were compared with theoretically and numerically evaluated ones. Test results about load-settlement curves showed that the bearing capacity increases with the increase of the undrained shear strength of ground. Punching shear or local shear failure was also observed. For a relatively low undrained shear strength of ground, settlement behavior is found to be crucial to evaluating the trafficability of machinery whereas bearing capacity becomes a dominant factor with the increase of undrained shear strength of ground. The method for assessing the bearing capacity of the ground related to trafficability of machinery is presented by acquiring the regression relationship between the contact pressure of machinery and settlements using load-settlement curves with the change of the undrained shear strength. Furthermore, results of numerical analyses about load-settlement relation are in relatively good agreement with those of centrifuge model test.

  • Piezocone test as well as Dilatometer tests are used worldwide to evaluate the engineering properties of clay soils. The common strong point of the two tests is that they can estimate, by the identical test equipment, various properties of soils, which are the unit weight of soils of OCR, K$\sub$o/, undrained shear strength(s$\sub$u/), coefficient of consolidation(c$\sub$h/) and soil classification etc,. A series of the two types of field tests are performed in this study on marine clays with low plasticity at Inchon International Airport construction site to estimate various properties of the soils such as s$\sub$u/, OCR, and c$\sub$h/, which are then compared each other as well as with the results of reference tests. The comparisons show that the way of interpretation is the most critical factor in obtaining confidential results for a certain engineering property for both tests.

  • Triaxial compression tests were run to study on the undrained strength characteristics of fiber mixed kaolin clay(Hadong). The influence of various test parameters such as amount and aspect ratio(ratio of length to diameter) of fiber, confining stress was also investigated. Test results showed that the increase in aspect ratio was increased in deviator stress at failure, but no effect on pore water pressure at failure. Deviator stress at failure was also increased at 0.5% mixing ratio(weight fraction of fiber to that of soil solid) of fiber but it was, thereafter, decreased and wits reached to constant after 2% mixing ratio. On the contrary, Pore water pressure at failure was increased as mixing ratio of fiber was greater than 1%. Deviator stress and pore water pressure of both clay and fiber mixed clay(FMC) at failure were increased as confining stress was increased. Deviator stress of FMC at failure was about 10% larger than that of clay, but pore water pressure of FMC at failure was almost similar to that of clay.

  • The accumulated deformation due to the undrained creep causes the general stability problem for the overall soil mass. In this study, the time-dependent constitutive equation, into which a damage law, modified cam clay model, and Perzyna's generalized viscous theory were incorporated, was derived microscopically. The model prediction agreed well with the experimental result including the case of the undrained creep rupture.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the liquefaction behaviour and predict deviator stress with matric suction, of unsaturated silty sand. The unsaturated soil tests were conducted using a modified triaxial cell and specimens were prepared using the moisture tamping method. The axis translation technique was used to create the desired matric suctions in the specimen. Undrained triaxial compression tests were carried out at matric suction of 0, 2, 5, 10 and 25 kPa. The specimens were sheared to axial strains of about 20% to obtain steady state conditions. The results showed that liquefaction of silty sand only occurs at matric suction of 0 kPa and 2 kPa. The results also show that at matric suctions of 5, 10 and 25 kPa, the resistance to liquefaction increases. As the suction increases, the undrained effective stress path approached the drained stress path. Also, the predicted and measured maximum deviator stress for unsaturated soils using the effective stress concept showed good agreement as matric suction increases. The deviator stress increase is nonlinear as matric suction increases.

  • Undrained cyclic triaxial compression tests were performed on Saemangeum dredged sand to evaluate factors affecting liquefaction strength and liquefaction behaviour characteristics. The results of these tests show that cyclic liquefaction can occur not only very loose sand(Relative density is 30%) but also dense sand(Relative density is 70%). To evaluate effect of the over consolidation ratio on the liquefaction strength, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial compression test was peformed, and the result of this test showed that the liquefaction of this test showed that the liquefaction strength of Saemangeum dredged sand approximately increased to square root of over consolidation ratio in the range of O.C.R value of 1.0 to 4.0. In the anisotropically consolidated sample tests, the liquefaction strength is increased by increasing the effective consolidation ratio.

  • Soils exhibit creep behavior in which deformation and movement proceed under a state of constant stress or load. In this study, A series of triaxial tests were performed under constant principal stress in order to interpret the undrained creep characteristics of silty sands. Although samples are non-plastic silty sands, the results of tests show that the creep deformation increasing over time. Based on the results of test, Singh-Mitchell model parameters and Generalized model coefficients were calculated. Generalized model showed slightly larger deformation in the primary creep range but secondary creep deformation was almost identical. Although Singh-Mitchell model showed relatively large errors compared to Generalized model because it uses the average of test results, but Singh-Mitchell model can be easily represented by three creep parameters.
