Calibrating Electrode Misplacement in Underwater Electric Field Sensor Arrays for the Electric Field-Based Localization of Underwater Vessels (수중 이동체의 전기장 신호 기반 위치추정을 위한 수중 전기장 배열센서의 전극 부설 위치 오차 보정 방법)

  • This paper proposes a method to calibrate the electrode misplacement in underwater electric field sensor arrays (EFSAs) for accurate measurements of underwater electric field signatures. The electrode misplacement of an EFSA was estimated by measuring the electric field signatures generated by a known electric source and by comparing the measurements with the theoretical calculations under similar measurement conditions. When the EFSA measured the electric field signatures induced by an unknown electric source, the electric properties of the unknown electric source were approximated by considering the optimized estimation of the electrode misplacement of the EFSA. Finally, the measured electric field signatures were calibrated by calculating the theoretical electric field signatures to be measured with an ideally installed EFSA without electrode misplacement; the approximated electric properties of the unknown electric source were also taken into account. Simulations were conducted to test the proposed calibration method. The results showed that the electrode misplacement could be estimated. Further, the electric field measurements and the electric field-based localization of underwater vessels became more accurate after the application of the proposed calibration method. The proposed method will contribute to applications such as the detection and localization of underwater electric sources, which require accurate measurements of underwater electric field signatures.

A Study on Development of Technology System for Deep-Sea Unmanned Underwater Robot of S. Korea analysed by the Application of Scenario Planning (한국형 수중로봇시스템의 기술개발연구 - 시나리오플래닝 적용으로 -)

  • This study is about development of technology system for an advanced deep-sea unmanned underwater robot of S. Korea analysed by the application of scenario planning. It was developed a 6000m class next-generation deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle(or robot, UUV) system, soonly ROV 'Hemire' and Depressor 'Henuvy' in 2006 at S. Korea and motion control, adaptive control algolithm, a work-space manipulator control algolithm, especially the underwater inertial-acoustic navigation system robust to initial errors and sensor failures. But there are remained matters on position tracking of the USBL, inertial-acoustic navigation system, attitude sensor, designed sonar sensors. So this study suggest the new idea for settle the matters and then this idea help the development of the underwater inertial-acoustic navigation system robust to initial errors and sensor failures, such as acoustic signal drop-out, by modifying the error covariance of the failed sonar signal when drop-out occurs. As a result, the future policy for deep-sea unmanned underwater robot of S. Korea is to further spur the development of new technology and more improvement of the technology level for deep-sea unmanned underwater robot system with indicator and imaginary wall as external device.

Development of Underwater Warfare Models on the Naval Weapon Systems (해군무기체계 수중교전 모델 라이브러리 개발)

  • ADD (Agency for Defense Development) has developed the naval warfare simulation environment (QUEST), this paper describes the model library of naval weapon systems for the application of underwater warfare simulation included in the QUEST. Models are basically developed in order to measure the effectiveness and tactical development of underwater engagement between ships and weapons. Analyzing the mission space of underwater engagement and the functionality of the legacy models, we define standards of the model structure and developed the model components. Each components are the well-defined environment, system, subsystem, algorithm models, and the interfaces are defined between them. Users can construct a model in an efficient way to various warfare scenarios using the re-usable model components and co-work with the common model library.

  • This paper proposes a novel method for acoustically and wirelessly transmitting data underwater with a high transmission rate. The method uses the most promising physical layer and multiple access technique (i.e., the code division multiple channel access technique) to divide the channel into subchannels. Data is transmitted through these subchannels. The codes are pseudo-random noise (PN) sequences. In the spread-spectrum technique, a signal such as electrical, electromagnetic, acoustic signal generated in a particular bandwidth is deliberately spread in the frequency domain, which results in a signal with a wider bandwidth. This paper reviews the possibility of application of the direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) technique in an underwater system using MATLAB. As the result of our review, we recognize that the DS-CDMA technique can be applied to underwater environments.

  • Security solutions using fiber-optic cable have not yet secured a solid technical stability, through which the Acoustic detection security system also did not have a complete defense techniques such as false alarm and detecting fail due to a number of variables. In this paper, we investigate 4 characteristics for the channel of underwater acoustic communication. We also construct detection system as a construction method for security system using optical cable through the analysis of acoustic signal in underwater. We perform analysis of signal characteristics and noise of underwater optical cable, and then we confirms the possibility of real application.

Underwater Localization using EM Wave Attenuation with Depth Information (전자기파의 감쇠패턴 및 깊이 정보 취득을 이용한 수중 위치추정 기법)

  • For the underwater localization, acoustic sensor systems are widely used due to greater penetration properties of acoustic signals in underwater environments. On the other hand, the good penetration property causes multipath and interference effects in structured environment too. To overcome this demerit, a localization method using the attenuation of electro-magnetic(EM) waves was proposed in several literatures, in which distance estimation and 2D-localization experiments show remarkable results. However, in 3D-localization application, the estimation difficulties increase due to the nonuniform (doughnut like) radiation pattern of an omni-directional antenna related to the depth direction. For solving this problem, we added a depth sensor for improving underwater 3D-localization with the EM wave method. A micro scale pressure sensor is located in the mobile node antenna, and the depth data from the pressure sensor is calibrated by the curve fitting algorithm. We adapted the depth(z) data to 3D EM wave pattern model for the error reduction of the localization. Finally, some experiments were executed for 3D localization with the fast calculation and less errors.

  • We know the several construction methods for underwater tunnel, but properly submerged concrete box type tunnel was mostly good structure stability and mostly shot length of tunnels. Submerged box type tunnel was buildup the unit segments in dry dock or ship yard by 10 to 20meters. The submerged box was composed with segments was join each together. It was installing the gate and waterproofing the coupling the front hull of a box. The complete submerged box rise up to the surface water, tow in the submerged box by tugboat, going to the destination of tunnel construction site. Beforehand dredge up soil at the bottom of a underwater, sinking the submerged box, connection together complete submerged box in underwater. The research and development ILM tunneling method is receiving careful study. Biggest weakness in submerged concrete box type tunnel was pressure waterproofing, box to box connecting, complete submerged boxes navigation and installation, after operation the submerged tunnel and management concrete box structure. It was positive evidence in submerged concrete box type tunnel. We make a practical application of the principle "the ILM tunneling method in underwater construction methods."

  • Wireless communication systems are inevitable for efficient underwater activities. Because of the poor propagation characteristics of light and electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves are generally used for the underwater wireless communication. Although there are many kinds of information type, visual images take an essential role especially for search and identification activities. For this reason, we developed an acoustic-based underwater image transmission system under a dual use technology project supported by MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). For the application to complicated and time-varying underwater environments all-digital transmitter and receiver systems are investigated. Array acoustic transducers are used at the receiver, which have the center frequency of 32kHz and the bandwidth of 4kHz. To improve transmission speed and quality, various algorithms and systems are used. The system design techniques will be discussed in detail including image compression/ decompression system, adaptive beam- forming, fast RLS adaptive equalizer, ${\partial}/4$ QPSK (Quadrilateral Phase Shift Keying) modulator/demodulator, and convolution coding/ Viterbi. Sonar System Application for detection of underwater work space boundary using seabed type underwater equipments (착저형 수중장비를 이용한 수중작업 시 작업경계면 인식을 위한 소나시스템 활용법)

  • The detection of an underwater work space boundary is very important when an underwater construction is carried out using seabed type underwater equipment, such as underwater machines for rubble mound leveling, because it can induce industrial disasters. Therefore, divers are needed to mark the underwater work space boundary. A nylon rope is used to improve the convenience during an underwater diver's work. The results showed that the work space boundary can be detected using a sonar system. Using these results, an efficient method to detect the underwater work space boundary can be obtained when an underwater construction is carried out using seabed type underwater equipment.
