The requirement of acoustic material which is used in underwater environment more increases. The material is used to reduce acoustic signature and radiate noise for underwater vehicle. Underwater acoustic material was made by viscoelastic material such as a rubber and a polyurethane etc. The mechanical and acoustic characteristics of these material change with hydrostatic pressure. In order to increase an acoustic performance according to hydrostatic pressure, several kinds of scatterers were added to viscoelastic material. In this paper, acoustic modelling and analysis techniques of underwater acoustic material with hydrostatic pressure were introduced and proposed. The specimens for pulse tube test were made and echo reductions were calculated and measured with hydrostatic pressure. Also the characteristics of echo reduction of the specimens with hydrostatic pressure were obtained and discussed.

The underwater acoustic wireless communication networks are generally formed by the different autonomous underwater acoustic vehicles, and transceivers interconnected to the bottom of the ocean with battery deployed modems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has become the most popular modulation technique in underwater acoustic communication due to its high data transmission and robustness over other symmetrical modulation techniques. To maintain the operability of underwater acoustic communication networks, the power consumption of battery-operated transceivers becomes a vital necessity to be minimized. The OFDM technology has a major lack of peak to average power ratio (PAPR) which results in the consumption of more power, creating non-linear distortion and increasing the bit error rate (BER). To overcome this situation, we have contributed our symmetry research into three dimensions. Firstly, we propose a machine learning-based underwater acoustic communication system through long short-term memory neural network (LSTM-NN). Secondly, the proposed LSTM-NN reduces the PAPR and makes the system reliable and efficient, which turns into a better performance of BER. Finally, the simulation and water tank experimental data results are executed which proves that the LSTM-NN is the best solution for mitigating the PAPR with non-linear distortion and complexity in the overall communication system.

The paper proposed the new underwater wireless communication system fitted to non-linear acoustic channel. Generally, in non-linear acoustic channel, one used to do acoustic communication using parametric effect that is some effect caused from acoustic wave having frequency different of two primary acoustic wave frequency. In the paper, Offset PSK communication method fitted to non-linear acoustic channel was proposed, and it was demonstrated through simulations.
We report on the development of a fiber optic hydrophone consists of a sensing Michelson interferometer and a compensating Mach-Zehnder interferometer for optical path length compensation. The double interferometer configuration has the following advantages: the hydrophone can be made more small; a laser source with a relatively short coherence length can be used; and the compensating interferometer can be located near the signal processing electronics, far away from the sensing interferometer and noise introduced by reference arm can be greatly reduced. The performance of the hydrophone is evaluated experimentally by immersing the sensing interferometer in a water tank to detect underwater acoustic signals generated by an acoustic wave projector. Experimental results show that over the frequency range of 1 to 4 kHz, the hydrophone has an almost flat response with an average normalized sensitivity of -302 dB re 1/ μ Pa.

A broad-band underwater acoustic transducer that uses thickness vibration mode, derived from a disk type piezoelectric ceramic, has been proposed and designed for DVL (Doppler Velocity Log). Three different types of acoustic transducer were evaluated with respect to the transmitting voltage response, receiving voltage sensitivity and bandwidth of the transducer. The effect of the acoustic impedance matching layer and backing layer is discussed. The results demonstrated that three matching layer with lossy backing layer is the best configuration for underwater transducer. The trial underwater acoustic transducer with three matching layer has a frequency bandwidth of 55%, maximum transmitting voltage response of 200 dB and a maximum receiving voltage sensitivity of -187.3 dB.

Underwater acoustic communication channel is influenced by environmental parameters such as multipath, background noise and scattering. Therefore, a transmitted signal is influenced by the sea surface and the sea bottom boundaries, and a received signal shows a delay spread. These factors create a noise in the image and degrade the quality of underwater acoustic communication. To solve these problems, in this paper, we evaluate the performance of an underwater acoustic communication model using a denoising auto-encoder used for unsupervised learning. Noise images generated by the underwater multipath channel were collected and used as training data. Experimental results were analyzed as a PSNR parameter that expressed the noise ratio of the two images.

As underwater environment monitoring system's interest has increased, the research is proceeding about underwater acoustic sensor network. Underwater sensor network can be applicable to many fields, such as underwater environment monitoring, underwater resource exploration, oceanic data collection, military purposes, etc. It is essential to define the PHY-MAC protocol for revitalization of the underwater acoustic sensor network which is available utilization in a variety of fields. However, underwater acoustic sensor network has to implement by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics, such as limited bandwidth, multi-path, fading, long propagation delay caused by low acoustic speed. In this paper, we define frequency of adjusted PHY protocol, network topology, MAC protocol, PHY-MAC interface, data frame format by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics. We also present system configuration of our implementation and evaluate performance based on our implementation with test in real underwater field.
Acoustic based localization is essential to operate autonomous robotic systems in underwater environment where the use of sensorial data is limited. This paper proposes a localization method using artificial underwater acoustic sources. The proposed method acquires directional angles of acoustic sources using time difference of arrivals of two hydrophones. For this purpose, a probabilistic approach is used for accurate estimation of the time delay. Then, Gaussian sum filter based SLAM technique is used to localize both acoustic sources and underwater vehicle. It is performed by using bearing of acoustic sources as measurement and inertial sensors as prediction model. The proposed method can handle directional ambiguity of time difference based source localization by generating Gaussian models corresponding to possible locations of both front and back sides. Through these processes, the proposed method can provide reliable localization method for underwater vehicles without any prior information of source locations. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experimental results conducted in a real sea environment.

Recently, there has been an increasing need for underwater communication systems to monitor ocean environments and prevent marine disasters, as well as to secure ocean resources. Most underwater communication systems adopted acoustic communication with a consideration of attenuation, absorption, and scattering in conductive sea water, and developed fully digital modems based on processors. In this study, a digital up converter (DUC) and a digital down converter (DDC) was developed for an underwater basestation based on underwater acoustic communication systems. Because one of the most important issues in underwater acoustic communication systems is low power consumption due to environmental problems, this study developed a specific hardware module for DUC and DDC. It supported four links of underwater acoustic communication systems and converted the sampling rate and frequency. The systemwas designed and verified using Verilog-HDL in ModelSim environment with the test data generated from baseband layer parts for an underwater base station.
