This study investigated the relation between preschoolers' emotion understanding and parents' emotion expressiveness and attitude toward children's emotion expressiveness. Subjects were ninety 3- to 5-year old children and their parents. Parents' emotion socialization was measured by PACES developed by Saami(1989) and FEQ developed by Harberstadt(1986). And preschoolers' identification of basic emotional expressions and expression of their own feelings and others' feelings in various situations were measured. Results revealed that 5-year-old children understood emotion better than 3-year-old children, and mother's positive emotion expression influenced children's emotion understanding. The purpose of this study was to investigate Chinese parents' reaction to their children's negative emotions and how these reactions relate to their children's understanding of emotions. Forty-two Chinese children (aged 4) and their parents participated in this study. Coping with Children's Negative Emotion Scale was given to parents to assess their reaction to their children's negative emotions. Children's emotional understanding was assessed using the modified emotional false-belief task and mixed emotion task. The results showed that Chinese parents gave supportive reactions more than non-supportive reactions to their children, and no difference in sex was found. The percentages of correct answers to false-belief task and mixed emotion task were low with no gender difference in both tasks. When age and sex of children were controlled, only fathers' supportive reactions to children's negative emotions significantly explained the variances in the level of children's understanding of emotions in both tasks. That is, children whose fathers showed greater supportive reactions to their negative emotions performed better at both tasks. It was concluded that fathers' supportive reactions to their children's negative emotions are very influential for emotional understanding among 4-year-old children in China.

This study was performed to explore the adolescents\` conception and practice of Hyo(filial piety). Fifteen teams of 500 adolescents were allowed to discuss about Hyo for two hours and the team leaders presented what they had discussed. The subjects were 330 elementary school students, 130 middle school students, and 40 high school students. The findings from the discussion and presentation were as follows: First, the adolescents\` conceptions of Hyo were different in the stages of schools. Elementary school students thought that they should do Hyo because they got lots of mercy from parents. Middle and high school students both thought that Hyo came from mutual(parent-children) understanding, but they showed somewhat different view about what disturbed the mutual understanding. Middle school students pointed the deficiency of parents'self-disclosure as a disturbing factor while high school students pointed the deficiency of adolescents'understanding of their parents. Second, the behavioral items that the subjects suggested as Hyo were analysed by the 12 Subvirtues of Adolescent's Hyo which was classified by Chung et al.(1996a). Adolescents could not propose any behavioral items for Thanks, Ancestor Worship, and Ecological Equilibrium, and some items for Advising Parents and Thrift. A lot of items were suggested for Moral Training, Supporting (Parents), Consorting (Parents), Respecting (Parents), Establishing Oneself, and Following Parents.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the roles of parents in science learning at the Everyday Science Classroom (ESC). Discourses of 20 parent-child dyads were analyzed to identify the roles of the parents and their significance. Data were also gathered through questionnaires that were made to survey the perception of parents and students of the Everyday Science Classroom (ESC) in Gwanak-gu. The results showed that parents played the role of Guide as well as Learner. Parents as the Guide showed roles of Process guide, Cognitive facilitator, Participation inducer, and Authoritative manager. Parents helped their children to accomplish the experiment successfully (34.5%) and offered cognitive scaffolds (21.3%) and affective scaffolds (8.7%) for children to reach a level of understanding that they could not reach by themselves. However, parents who helped their own children without considering their needs repressed children's autonomous learning (1.6%). The roles of parents as the Learner were categorized into Active learner (16.1%), Collaborative fellow learner (15.1%), and Authoritative leading learner (2.7%). The multiple roles of parents can influence the children's understanding of science in both positive and negative ways. This study can provide basic information on the roles of parents and their interaction with their children. Reflection on positive aspects of parent participation in program development will promote the understanding of science in both parents and children.
