  • Hybrid-fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) may provide much higher tensile and flexural strengths, tensile ductility, and flexural toughness than normal concrete (NC). HFRC slab has outstanding advantages for use as a composite bridge potential deck slab owing to higher tensile strength, ductility and crack resistance. However, there is little information on shear connector associated with HFRC slabs. To investigate the mechanical behavior of the stud shear connectors embedded in HFRC slab, 14 push-out tests (five batches) in HFRC and NC were conducted. It was found that the stud shear connector embedded in HFRC had a better ductility, higher stiffness and a slightly larger shear bearing capacity than those in NC. The experimentally obtained ultimate resistances of the stud shear connectors were also compared against the equations provided by GB50017 2003, ACI 318-112011, AISC 2011, AASHTO LRFD 2010, PCI 2004, and EN 1994-1-1 (2004), and an empirical equation to predict the ultimate shear connector resistance considering the effect of the HFRC slabs was proposed and validated by the experimental data. Curve fitting was performed to find fitting parameters for all tested specimens and idealized load-slip models were obtained for the specimens with HFRC slabs.

  • In regions of high shear forces in composite bridges, headed stud shear connectors need to be arranged with a small spacing in order to satisfy the design requirement of resisting the high interface shear force present at this location. Despite this, studies related to groups of headed studs are somewhat rare. This paper presents an investigation of the static behaviour of grouped stud shear connectors in high-strength concrete. Descriptions are given of five push-out test specimens with different arrangements of the studs that were fabricated and tested, and the failure modes, load-slip response, ultimate load capacities and related slip values that were obtained are reported. It is found that the load-slip equation given by some researchers based on a single stud shear connector in normal strength concrete do not apply to grouped stud shear connectors in high-strength concrete, and an algebraic load-slip expression is proposed based on the test results. Comparisons between the test results and the formulae provided by some national codes show that the equations for the ultimate capacity provided in these codes are conservative when used for connectors in high-strength concrete. A reduction coefficient is proposed to take into account the effect of the studs being in a group.

  • Composite steel plate shear wall (CSPSW) is a relatively novel structural system proposed to improve the performance of steel plate shear walls by adding one or two layers of concrete walls to the infill plate. In addition, the buckling of the infill steel plate has a significant negative effect on the shear strength and energy dissipation capacity of the overall systems. Accordingly, in this study, using the finite element (FE) method, the performance and behavior of composite steel shear walls using T-shaped stiffeners to prevent buckling of the infill steel plate and increase the capacity of CSPSW systems have been investigated. In this paper, after modeling composite steel plate shear walls with and without steel plates with finite element methods and calibration the models with experimental results, effects of parameters such as several stiffeners, vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and a combination of T-shaped stiffeners located in the composite wall have been investigated on the ultimate capacity, web-plate buckling, von-Mises stress, and failure modes. The results showed that the arrangement of stiffeners has no significant effect on the capacity and performance of the CSPSW so that the use of vertical or horizontal stiffeners did not have a significant effect on the capacity and performance of the CSPSW. On the other hand, the use of diagonal hardeners has potentially affected the performance of CSPSWs, increasing the capacity of steel shear walls by up to 25%.

  • The aim of this study is to present a practical and simple method for decision of ultimate failure mode of high-strength concrete beam members, based on interaction between shear strength and displacement ductility. Four tests were conducted on full-scale beam specimens having concrete compressive strength of 410kgf/$cm^{2}$. Prediction of failure mode from presented method and comparison with test results are also presented

  • In recent years, glassfibers have been used for strengthening in RC structure because of low material cost and easy repairing work. The purpose of this study is to experimentally and analytically investigate the effect of glassfibers for enhancing the capacity of RC flexural beams and shear beams. The experimental result shows that yield and ultimate strength of RC flexural beam with glassfibers are increased by approxiamate 13% and 26%, comparing with those for without glassfibers, and also ultimate strength of RC shear beam with glassfibers are increased by 34%, comparing with those for without glassfibers.

  • The minimum shear and torsional reinforcement provisions in ACI 318-95 are still empirical. This paper describes the derivation of a rational approach for minimum shear and torsional reinforcement in beams so as to preclude brittle failure in shear and torsion. This is ensured by specifying that the beam's ultimate capacity of shear and torsion should be greater than its cracking shear and torsion. The formula presented herein for computing minimum shear and torsional reinforcement shows the need for modification of current provision for the minimum shear and torsion reinforcement.

  • Nine steel fiber reinforced high strength concrete beams and three steel fiber reinforced normal strength concrete beams without stirrups were tested by two point load. The variables studied in this investigation are the shear span/depth ratios of a/d = 2, 3 and 4, steel fiber volume fractions of V$_{f}$ : 0, 0.5% and 0.75% and concrete compressive strengths of f$_{ck}$: 630kgf/$cm^{2}$, and 310kgf/$cm^{2}$. Based on these tests and on tests by previous investigators, predictive equation is proposed for evaluating the ultimate shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. The proposed equation gave good prediction for the ultimate shear strength of the tested beams.

  • The behavior of concrete deep beams in shear is substantially influenced by beam size and shape, loading conditions, reinforcement details, and material properties. Therefore, it is not easy to predict the ultimate response of beams correctly and take into account all those factors in practical shear design. In this study, a grid softened strut-tie model approach for determining the shear strengths of various reinforced concrete deep beams is proposed. The validity of the approach is examined through the strength analysis of numerous reinforced concrete deep beams tested to failure. The approach can be further developed to improve the current deep beam design procedures by incorporating the actual shear resisting mechanisms of deep beams.
