Whitening and anti-oxidant effects were observed in order to investigate the biological activations of Salvia plebeia herb ethanol extracts. No toxicity was found in both B16F10 melanoma cells and Raw 264.7 cells exposed to Salvia plebeia herb ethanol extracts for 48 hour. The extracts showed significant antioxidant activity in cell-free and cell-cultured system. In the DPPH radical assay, it removed dose-dependently DPPH radicals and showed 77.6% at $100{\mu}g/mL$. In the cells, it also significantly removed silica-induced ROS generation and LPS-induced NO production in a dose dependent manner. Using L-DOPA and L-tyrosine as a substrate, tyrosinase activity was inhibited using Salvia plebeia herb ethanol extracts in a dose-dependent manner. The supression occurred to be in the B16F10 melanoma cells, where dose-dependently inhibited Salvia plebeia herb ethanol extracts of $1{\mu}g/M$${\alpha}$-melanocyte stimulated hormone-induced melanin production and the inhibitory effect was 30.7% at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. This suggests that the Salvia plebeia herb ethanol extracts are usable for cosmetic product developments for anti-oxidant and whitening effects.
This study was initiated to investigate the skin whitening activities of methanol extracts from fruiting bodies of I. obliquus. The total polyphenols and flavonoids contents of I. obliquus methanol extracts were 31.85 mg/g and 28.33 mg/g, respectively. The methanol extract of the mushroom treated on B16/F10 melanoma and NIH3T3 cell lines did not show cytotoxic activity. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radical scavenging activity and chelating activity on ferrous ions of I. obliquus methanol extract were lower than those of positive control, tocopherol and BHT. The tyrosinase and L-DOPA inhibitory activities of the extract were lower than those of positive control, kojic acid and ascorbic acid. The tyrosinase and melanin synthesis inhibitory activities of the melanoma cells treated with the extract were comparable with positive control, arbutin. The experimental results suggested that methanol extract of I. obliquus contained inhibitory activities of tyrosinase and melanin synthesis in the B16/F10 melanoma cells by dose dependent manner. High ultra-violet absorption spectra in the range of 280-350 nm showed that I. obliquus extract could protect skin from UV radiation damage. Therefore, fruiting bodies of I. obliquus can be used for developing skin whitening, anti-UV and skin care agents.

Lactobacillus plantarum SM4, a strain producing β-glucosidase, was isolated from kimchi and fermented with white Taraxacum coreanum to enhance the production of bioactive compounds. The total polyphenol content(TPC), total flavonoid content(TFC), radical scavenging activity(RSA), tyrosinase inhibitory activities(TIA), and collagenase inhibitory activities(CIA) were measured to evaluate the skin whitening and anti-wrinkle effects of the fermented product. The TPC of fermented white T. coreanum was 41.8±0.26 mg GAE/g DW, which was approximately two times higher than the hot-water extraction of 21.4±0.67 mg GAE/g DW. RSA, an indicator of antioxidant activity, was 65.6±4.7% in fermentation, which is four times higher than that of the hot-water extract. TAI and CAI, which are indicators of the whitening and anti-wrinkle effects, were 87.9±4.73% and 66.7±3.48%, respectively, which were 2.4 and 1.5 times higher than those of hot-water extraction. When comparing the UVA(320 nm) protection effects of fermented and hot-water extraction, the fermented white T. coreanum showed higher protection with an absorption rate of 64.7% and 15.2%, respectively. The white T. coreanum fermented product showed higher bioactive properties and improved skin whitening, anti-wrinkle, and UV protection effects through the production of β-glucosidase from L. plantarum SM4.
This study was performed to improve antioxidant activities and skin-whitening effects of Rubus coreanus Miquel extracts by nano-encapsulation. R. coreanus was extracted at $60^{\circ}C$ and encapsulated by lecithin and gelagine. Nano-encapsulated extracts showed highest free radical scavengering effect as 97.62% in adding sample ($500\;{\mu}g/m{\ell}$), compared to the extracts from conventional processes. It was showed strong inhibition effect on melanin production test by Clone M-3 cells as 55.23%. High inhibitory potency on tyrosinase was also measured as 155.8% by adding nano-sample of 1 $mg/m{\ell}$. The improvement of biological activity was demonstrated by real time confocal microscope. We could consider that the water soluble extracts of R. coreanus could be definitely enhanced by nano-encapsulated as a potent natural resources for antioxidant and skin-whitening agent.
Objectives : Aquilaria crassna is a traditional herbal medicine, which is used to treat allergies, diabetes, neurological diseases. Recently, Aquilaria crassna extracts have been reported in anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, various solvents fraction of Aquilaria crassna were investigated on various physiological activities. Methods : According to the polarity, the solvents fraction of Aquilaria crassna were confirmed through TLC, and the activities of the extracts were confirmed in anti-diabetes, anti-obesity, whitening, anti-gout, and anti-inflammation. Results : TLC results showed that ACM and ACM/E have similar patterns and most of the components were transferred to ACM/E. Treatment with ACM and ACM/E fraction were significantly decreased the generation of NO in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated macrophage cells. Analysis of biological activities such as α-glucosidase, protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP1B), tyrosinase, xanthine oxidase (XO) and pancreatic lipase inhibition, showed that ACM and ACM/E have more inhibitory effects than other fractions. Conclusions : Therefore, the results of the present study clearly demonstrate that Aquilaria crassna and its constituents might be beneficial in the prevention or treatment of immune-regulating effects.
Objectives : This study aimed to establish cosmeceutical activities of Perilla frutescens var. acuta. Methods : Folium Perillae, which had been extracted, concentrated, and freeze drying with water and ethanol, have been used for the experiment. The effects on electronic donating ability, SOD-like activity, xanthine oxidase inhibition, whitening effect have been investigated in the cosmeceutical activity measurement of function experiment. Results : Both water and ethanol extracts of Perilla frutescens var. acuta showed relatively high electron donating ability of more than 70% at over 500ppm. Also, SOD like activity increased in a dose dependent matter of more than 80% at 5,000ppm, while tyrosinase showed insufficient inhibitory rate. Xanthine oxidase showed a meaningful inhibitory effect of 72.4% in water extract and 55.3% at 1,000ppm in ethanol extract. The addition of $Fe^{2+}ion\;and\;Cu^{2+}ion$ showed relatively high oxidizing inhibitory effect of 57% and 41%, respectively, at 500ppm in water extract and, when $Fe^{2+}$ ion was added in ethanol extract, the effect of 64% at 1,000ppm was achieved. Also, higher oxidizing inhibitory effect was shown against $Fe^{2+}$ rather than $Cu^{2+}$ in both water and ethanol extracts. For human cancer cells, relatively high growth inhibition ability was shown against melanoma G361 in both water and ethanol extracts. Conclusion : From the above results, it was confirmed that Perilla frutescens var. acuta could be used in functional cosmetics.
The objective of this study is to estimate the inhibition of skin melanin formation by extract of Angelica koreana and Cnidium monnieri and the possibility of functional cosmetic materials through anti-irritation and stability test. The extract used in this experiment is White-$AK^{TM}$ and the INCI name is Osthole. The main component of White-$AK^{TM}$ was identified as coumarin and EC50 value was 2.7ppm by mouse melanoma B 16 cell test. White-$AK^{TM}$ showed inhibitory effects 100 times lower concentration than arbutin. The main mechanism for skin whitening effect thought to be inhibition of tyrosinase-related gene expression. The basic essence formulation of White-$AK^{TM}$ 5% solution applied to the skin showed the effect of relieving skin irritation. White-$AK^{TM}$ in an opaque container, under UV conditions for 4 weeks, and showed close to 100% recovery and 97% recovery under $50^{\circ}C$ for 4 weeks. Therefore, it is thought that White-$AK^{TM}$ which helps skin whitening, relieving skin irritation and stable in UV condition is able to be used as the functional component in the cosmetic formulation.

To investigate the potential use of makgeolli by-products as cosmetic materials, their phenolic and kojic acid contents, antioxidant activity, whitening effect, and anti-wrinkle activity were evaluated. Extracts were obtained with five different solvents (containing 0, 25, 50, 75, and 100% ethanol) from nuruk lees (NL), rice lees (RL), raw makgeolli (RM), and commercial makgeolli (CM) at 20 and $50^{\circ}C$. NL and CM extracts prepared with 75% ethanol had the highest phenolic contents (13.26 and 16.66 mg gallic acid equivalents/g, respectively) at 20 and $50^{\circ}C$, respectively. The highest kojic acid content was found in NL extracts with 0% ethanol at $20^{\circ}C$, while kojic acid was not detected in extracts prepared at $50^{\circ}C$. NL and RL extracts at $20^{\circ}C$ showed significant antioxidant activity. Whitening effects, determined by tyrosinase inhibitory activity, were highest for the NL extract prepared with 75% ethanol at $50^{\circ}C$. Noticeable anti-wrinkling effects, estimated by elastase inhibition activity, were also found in NL and RL extracts. These results suggest that makgeolli by-products could be valuable cosmetic materials with antioxidant, whitening, and anti-wrinkle activities.

Smilax china root has been used as traditional medicinal remedy in China and Korea and reported to have various biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic and antimicrobial activities. In this study, the possibility of development as natural antioxidants of Smilax china root extracts was investigated. For the evaluation of antioxidant activity, aqueous- and 25% EtOH extract from Smilax china root were prepared and six different evaluation assay methods, i.e., measurement of total phenolics, radical scavenging effects on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO) and nitrite $(NO_2)$, reducing power, and inhibitory effect on tyrosinase activity, were used. The total phenolics content of two extracts was high as the level of 36 mg of gallic acid equivalent per 1 g of dried sample tested. The radical scavenging activities of ethanol extract toward DPPH and NO were better than those of aqueous extract (p<0.05). The $NO_2$ scavenging activity of both extracts showed the highest value at pH 1.2 (98%). Especially, the $NO_2$ scavenging activities of EtOH extract were significantly stronger than those of aqueous one at pH 4.2 (51%) and pH 6.0 (32%), respectively. In the reducing power test, both extracts revealed higher ferric ion reducing activity than known antioxidant, vitamin C at the level of $0.05\sim0.1mg/mL$ (p<0.01). The 1 mL of aqueous and 25% EtOH extract showed effective inhibition activity on tyrosinase activity as 45% and 53%, respectively. Therefore, these results suggest that two extracts from Smilax china root may serve as useful natural antioxidants.

Forsythia fructus has been shown to have antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, anti-aging and whitening effects. This work was carried out to investigate the anti-aging effects of Forsythia viridissima-prescription extracts (Yeongyoseungma-tang, Gamiyeongyoseungma-tang, Hoechunyangkyeok-san) on skin. Skin anti-aging effect of Forsythia viridissima-prescription extracts (Yeongyoseungma-tang, Gamiyeongyoseungma-tang, Hoechunyangkyeok-san) was evaluated by using antioxidant assay, anti-glycation activity, inhibitory effect of tyrosinase activity, expression of type I procollagen and UVA-induced matrix metalloproteinase-1 on HS68 cells, and reduction of ${\alpha}$-MSH-induced melanin on B16F1 cells. Forsythia viridissima-prescription extracts showed anti-oxidative and anti-glycation activity. The pectinex hydrolysed extract from Yeongyoseungma-tang 75% EtOH extract and Gamiyeongyoseungma-tang 75% EtOH extract increased the type I procollagen synthesis, and decreased the UVA-induced MMP-1 expression on HS68 cells. The pectinex hydrolysed extracts of Hoechunyangkyeok-san 75% EtOH extract had the inhibitory effect of melanin synthesis on B16F1 cells. Based on these results, we suggest that Forsythia viridissima-prescription extracts may be useful as a potential source of functional anti-aging cosmetics.
