Restrictions on the emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter from marine engines are being tightened. Each of these emissions requires different reduction technologies, which are costly and require many pieces of equipment to meet the requirements. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel has a great advantage in reducing harmful emissions emitted from ships. Therefore, the marine engine application of LNG fuel is significantly increasing in new ship buildings. Accordingly, this study analyzed the internal support structure, insulation type, and fuel supply piping system of a 35 m3 International Maritime Organization C type pressurized storage tank of an LNG-fueled ship. Analysis of the heat transfer characteristics revealed that A304L stainless steel has a lower heat flux than A553 nickel steel, but the effect is not significant. The heat flux of pearlite insulation is much lower than that of vacuum insulation. Moreover, the analysis results of the constraint method of the support ring showed no significant difference. A553 steel containing 9% nickel has a higher strength and lower coefficient of thermal expansion than A304L, making it a suitable material for cryogenic containers.

The purpose of this study is to contribute to the prevention of ship collisions by investigating real ship collision cases and statistically analyzing causes of human error for captains and Officers of the Watch (OOW). This study encompassed a total of 109 cases for 218 vessels, which were suitable for the analysis of ship accidents between merchant ships or merchant ships and fishing boats over the 7 years from 2010 to 2016. Data was collected while classifying vessels according to type, Give-way and Stand-on vessels, along with the cause of human error. Factors causing human error were identified after focusing on the cause of each collision given by the OOW ; frequency and cross tabulation analyses were conducted using SPSS, a statistical analysis tool. As a result, the main causes of human error by an OOW in a ship collision situation were that lookout was neglected in a Give-way vessel including radar surveillance (74.3 %) or continuous observation of an opponent vessel was carried out (17.4 %). A major factor for Stand-on vessels was failure to act to avoid collision with another vessel (63.3 %). In particular, most neglect for lookout type merchant ships occurred after the opponent ship was first observed, and a common cause of lookout neglect and neglect of duty was a focus on other tasks during navigational watch time.

As preliminary work for the establishment of a harmonized ship hand signal standard, this paper explores the availability of hand signals as a means of shipboard work communication and considers the validity of standardization. Prior to the feasibility study, shipboard work activities that use hand signals were classified based only on ship safety managers' arbitrary decisions. This survey was carried out to measure shipboard workers' willingness to communicate with hand signals and their preferences regarding the institutional standardization of a hand signal framework if they engage in activities classified as relevant. The results of statistical analysis (a t-test and correlation analysis) showed that respondents are willing to accept harmonized hand signals regardless of both their work type (crew/safety supervisors) and work department (deck/engine room) under working situations where hand signals are an available means of communication. In addition, there was a significant difference in the extent of shipboard workers' frequency of hand signal usages between each type of work activity, indicating a significant positive (+) correlation between frequency of usage and preference for standardization. Finally, it was concluded that shipboard work communication would be effectively improved if a follow-up study is carried out to establish prioritized harmonized hand signal standards for port-related work activities, such as crane operation, windlass/winch operation, line movement/delivery and cargo hold operations.

Ship damage caused by maritime casualties leads to marine pollution and loss of life and property. To prevent serious damage from maritime casualties, several types of safety regulations are applied in ship design. Damage stability regulation is one of the most important safety issues. Designs of ships for long international voyages must comply with these regulations. Current regulations, however, do not consider the characteristics of the operating route of each ship and reflect only ship size and type of cargo. In this paper, a damage safety assessment was undertaken for a ship carrying radioactive waste in actual wave conditions. Damage cases for safety assessment were constructed on the basis of safety regulations and related research results. Hull form, internal arrangement, loading condition and damage condition were modeled for damage safety simulation. The safety simulation was performed and analyzed for 10 damage cases with various wave heights, frequency and angle of attack on an operating route. Based on evaluation results, a design alternative was generated, and it was also simulated. These results confirmed that damage safety analysis is highly important in the design stage in consideration of the operating route characteristics by simulation. Thus a ship designer can improve safety from damage in this manner.

There are winds and waves in the sea, and they are changed frequently in accordance with the weather. By analyzing then which have the closest relation to the ship's safe voyage, evaluating the seakeeping performance and then taking a proper act on, navigators should carry out safe navigation on the sea A ship in seaways suffers continuous disturbances by irregular waves, and ship motions with irregular waves cannot be easily described as a system model which is adequate to a control system. But, in general, for seakeeping analysis, ship motions in irregular seas can be estimated by the superposition of the motion responses in regular wave components of the sea spectrum. After comparing and analyzing the winds and waves in major sea areas, this paper evaluates the navigational safety of ships on the Korean coast with potential dangerous seakeeping performance using the weather information provided by land The conclusion is as follows: (1) It is possible that the safety of ships could be secured more accurately by evaluating the seakeeping performance of ships. (2) When the weather is bad, the departure of ships could be controlled by evaluating the navigational safety of ships. (3) When a ship is placed in commission in any area, this evaluation could be used to decide the type and size of ship in use.

Operation Abstract : Operational cost required for navigating a ship may differ from according to type, scale, economic speed, navigation area and other factors. However, it is known that the fuel oil price ratio takes 50~60 %. It is the current trend because of the use of poor quality fuel and it is reviewed even for small to medium sized ships to save the operational costs due to the recent rise of international oil price. Furthermore, ocean carriers are taking action to low speed navigation as the alternative method of reducing fuel consumption. Hence, in this study, fuel consumption of main engine was measured by using actual operating ship data compared with sea speed at sea. It was suggested that the area of M/E's load(70 %) lower than NCR is the optimal navigating condition through the relation between speed and fuel consumption compared with advance ratio together with the load.

The aim of this study is to develop a rapid calculation technique of the residual strength in order to prevent sequential events under grounding accidents. Very Large Crude-Oil Carrier (VLCC), Suezmax, and Aframax double hull oil tankers carrying large quantities of crude oil were selected for target structures. The rock geometries are chosen from the published regulation by Marine Pollution Treaty (MARPOL) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Oceanic rocks as the most frequently encountered obstruction with ships are applied in this work. Damage condition was predicted using ALPS/HULL program based on grounding scenario with selected parameters, i.e. depth of penetration, damage location and tanker type. The results of the scenarios are quantified to form an empirical formula which can evaluate the residual strength. The proposed formula is validated by applying a series of random grounding scenarios.
Two key data areas of the integrated production database in computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems are the product structure in the forms of bills of material(BOM) and the process structure in the forms of routings. The great majority of existing information systems regard the BOM and routing as two separate data entities, possibly with some degree of cross-referencing. This paper proposes new information structure called the bills of material and routings(BMR) that logically integrates the BOM and routings for the CIM systems in ship production. The characteristics of ship production are described as: 1) make-to-order production type, 2) combined manufacturing principles (workshop production and construction site production), 3) significant overlapping of design, planning and manufacturing, 4) very long order throughput time, 5) complex product structure and production process. The proposed BMR systematically manages ail parts and operations data needed ship production considering characteristics of ship production. Also, the BMR situated on the integrated production database more efficiently supports interface between engineering and production functions, and integrates a wide variety of functions within production such as production planning, process planning, operation scheduling, material planning, costing etc., and simplifies information flow between sub-systems in CIM systems.
The initial response to a marine accident can play a key role to minimize the accident. Therefore, various decision support systems have been developed using sensors, simulations, and active response equipment. In this study, we developed an algorithm to predict damage locations using ship motion data with bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM), a type of recurrent neural network. To reflect the low frequency ship motion characteristics, 200 time-series data collected for 100 s were considered as input values. Heave, roll, and pitch were used as features for the prediction model. The F1-score of the BiLSTM model was 0.92; this was an improvement over the F1-score of 0.90 of a prior model. Furthermore, 53 of 75 locations of damage had an F1-score above 0.90. The model predicted the damage location with high accuracy, allowing for a quick initial response even if the ship did not have flood sensors. The model can be used as input data with high accuracy for a real-time progressive flooding simulator on board.
