  • A method for the classification of kinematic chains according to the similarity in their structures is proposed. Classifcation code is defined from the contracted graph of the kinematic chain. This method of classifying kinematic chains can be effectively used for the systematic enumeration of structurally distinct kinematic chains given the number of links and degrees of freedom of the kinematic chains. Two separate steps for the enumeration are developed in the study. The first step is to generated all the possible classification codes and the next step is to generate individual kinematic chains belonging to each classification code generated. Using this two step procedure, kinematic chains up to 12 links are successfully enumerated in the present study. It is concluded that the two step method can be efficiently used for the type synthesis of mechanisms.

  • A two-step approach has been used to obtain a new transition criterion for the stratified and nonstratified flow in horizontal pipe: (1) In the first step, a more general expression than the existing models for the flow transition criterion has been derived from the analysis of singular points and neutral stability conditions, or the parallel lines conditions of the transient one-dimensional two- phase flow equations of two-fluid model. (2) In the second step, introducing simplifications and incorporating a parameter into the general expression obtained in the first step to satisfy a number of physical conditions a priori specified, a new simple flow transition criterion for horizontal pipes has been derived. Comparison between results predicted by the present theory with the experimental data and theories in the pipe flow conditions, show good agreement.

  • This paper deals with an analysis of dynamic mechanism for the industrial two-step folding automatic door. A nonlinear equation of motion was derived in terms of folding angle to estimate driving forces. Based on this dynamic behavior, time taken during the door's opening well as their velocities were controlled so that the operating conditions can be obtained for the purpose of design. The stiffness of twisting spring was also investigated when the automatic door closed, because a dangerous accident takes place from the door's free falling. The current research will be a very useful tool in the near future for the dynamic analysis for the multi-step folding automatic door.

  • Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films were fabricated by the pulsed laser ablation deposition (PLAD) method onto Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrates. Crystalline phases as well as preferred orientations in PZT films were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The well-crystallized perovskite phase and the (101) preferred orientation were obtained by two-step annealing at the conditions of $650^{\circ}C$, 1 hour. It was found that the temperature for the pulsed laser ablated PZT films annealed via a two-step annealing process can be reduced 20$0^{\circ}C$ compared to that of the conventional three-step annealing temperature profile for enhancing the transformation of the perovskite phase. The remanent polarization and the coercive field of this film were about 20 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 46 kV/cm, while the dielectric constant and loss values measured at 1 KHz were approximately 860 and 0.04, respectively. The interesting phenomena of this film, such as vertical shift in hysteresis curve, are also discussed.

  • In this paper, a thermally stable nickel silicide technology using the co-sputtering of nickel and titanium atoms capped with TiN layer is proposed for nano-scale metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET) applications. The effects of the incorporation of titanium ingredient in the co-sputtered Ni layer are characterized as a function of Ti sputtering power. The difference between the one-step rapid thermal process (RTP) and two-step RTP for the silicidation process has also been studied. It is shown that a certain proportion of titanium incorporation with two-step RTP has the best thermal stability for this structure.

  • This paper is concerned with the investigation of the impurity redistribution process in a two step diffusion. In integrated circuit technology, two step boron diffusion involving a deposition step followed by a drive-in step in commonly encounted. The drive-in process is usually performed in oxidizing atmosphere resulting in redistribution of impurity (boron) within the semiconductor. This paper proposes a new numerical analysis method; Bounary Element Method to determine impurity profile at the arbitrary point in domain by its coordinate and boundary value.

  • A two-step method is presented for the optimum design of trusses with available sections under stress and Euler buckling constraints. The shape design of the truss is used as a means to convert the discrete solution into a continuous one. In the first step of the method, a continuous solution is obtained by sizing and shape design using an approximate polynomial expression for the buckling coefficients. In the second step, the member sizes obtained are changed to the nearest available sections and the truss is reconfigured by using the exact values for the buckling coefficients. The optimizer used is based on the sequential quadratic programming and the gradients are evaluated in closed form. The method is illustrated by two numerical examples.

  • A small integral reactor SMART (System Integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor), being developed in Korea since late 1990s and targeted to obtaining a standard design approval by the end of 2011, is introduced. The design scope and level for design certification (DC) is well described in the U.S. NRC SECY documents published the early 1990s. However, the documents are valid for a one-step licensing process called a combined operating license (COL) by the U.S. NRC, while Korea still uses a two-step licensing process. Thus, referencing the concept of the SECY documents, we have established the design scope and level for the SMART DC using the contexts of the standard review plan (SRP). Some examples of the results and issues raised during our review are briefly presented in this paper. The same methodology will be applied to other types of reactor under development in Korea, such as future VHTR reactors.

  • In this paper an experimental study is presented to investigate the effect of a step edge and a stationary droplet on the dynamic behavior of impacting droplet on a wall. The main parameters are the distance from the edge and the center-to-center distance between two droplets. Photographic images are presented to show coalescence dynamics, shape evolution and contact line movement. The emphasis is on presenting the spreading length of droplet for the step edge and two coalescing droplets along their original centers. It is clarified that the droplet exhibits much different dynamic behavior depending on the location of the step edge. The momentum of impacting droplet was better transferred to the stationary droplet as the center- to-center distance between two droplets was reduced, which results in more spreading of coalescing droplet.
