  • The soot yield has been studied by a premixed propane-oxygen-inert gas combustion in a specially designed disk-type constant-volume combustion chamber to investigate the effect of pressure, temperature and turbulence on soot formation. Premixtures are simultaneously ignited by eight spark plugs located on the circumference of chamber at 45 degrees intervals in order to observe the soot formation under high temperature and high pressure. The eight converged flames compress the end gases to a high pressure. The laser schlieren and direct flame photographs with observation area of 10 mm in diameter are taken to examine the behaviors of flame front and gas flow in laminar and turbulent combustion. The soot volume fraction in the chamber center during the final stage of combustion at the highest pressure is measured by the in-situ laser extinction technique and simultaneously the corresponding burnt gas temperature by the two-color pyrometry method. The changes of pressure and temperature during soot formation are controlled by varying the initial charging pressure and the volume fraction of inert gas compositions, respectively. It is found that the soot yield increases with dropping the temperature and raising the pressure at a constant equivalence ratio, and the soot yield in turbulent combustion decreases as compared with that in laminar combustion because the burnt gas temperature increases with the drop of heat loss for laminar combustion.

  • This paper presents an investigation on $C_2$, CH, OH radicals and NOx emissions in partially premixed flames with acoustic excitation. The radicals are visualized by the digital image technique with optical filters and ICCD camera while NOx emissions are determined by a chemiluminescent detection(NOx analyser). The measurements are made in flames with an overall equivalence ratio (${\phi}_o$) 0.5 and a center tube equivalence ratio(${\phi}_c$) varing from 1.1 to 5.0 for a constant fuel flow rate. In the case of excitation, the visual shape of the flame is changed from laminar to turbulent-like flames. Images of $C_2$, CH, and OH radicals resemble those of the flame appearances as the excitation phase is varied, and the radicals generated at the upstream are convected toward the downstream. It is inferred that the flame characteristics is affected by the flow characteristics of air-fuel mixture. In the case of acoustic excitation, OH radicals are much increased relative to unexcitation. From the radicals and flame visualization under acoustic excitation, the reduction of flame length affects the shorter residence time of center tube mixture, and significantly influences the NOx reduction.

  • An experimental study of the flame response in a turbulent premixed combustor has been conducted in order to investigate mechanisms for combustion instabilities in a lean premixed gas turbine combustor. A lab-scale combustor and mixing section system were fabricated to measure the flame transfer function. Measurements are made of the velocity fluctuation in the nozzle using hot wire anemometry and of the heat release fluctuation in the combustor using chemiluminescence emission. The results show that the flame transfer functions are greatly dependent on the modulation frequency as well as operating conditions such as equivalence ratio. Flame dynamics can be generalized as a function of Strouhal number which is a ratio of flame length to modulation wave length.

  • Combustion using oxygen enriched air is known as a technology which can increase flame stability as well as thermal efficiency due to improving the burning rate. Lift-off, blowout limit and flame length were examined as a function of jet velocity, coflow velocity and OEC(Oxygen Enriched Concentration). Blowout limit of the flame below OEC 25% decreased with increase of coflow velocity, but the limit above OEC 25% increased inversely. Lift-off height decreased with increase of OEC. In particular, lift-off hardly occurred in the condition above OEC 40%. Flame length of the flames above OEC 40% was increased until the blowout occurred. Great flame stability was obtained since lift-off and blowout limit significantly increased with increase of OEC.

  • With the introduction of Fractal notation, various fields of engineering adopted fractal notation to express characteristics of geometry involved and one of the most frequently applied areas was turbulence. With research on turbulence regarding the surface as fractal geometry, attempts to analyze turbulent premised flame as fractal geometry also attracted attention as a tool for modeling, for the flame surface can be viewed as fractal geometry. Experiments focused on disclosure of flame characteristics by measuring fractal parameters were done by researchers. But robust principle or theory can't be extracted. Only reported modeling efforts using fractal dimension is flame speed model by Gouldin. This model gives good predictions of flame speed in unstrained case but not in highly strained flame condition. In this research, approaches regarding fractal dimension of flame as one representative value is pointed out as a reason for the absence of robust model. And as an extort to establish robust modeling, Presents methods treating fractal dimension as statistical variable. From this approach flame characteristics reported by experiments such as Da effect on flame structure can be seen quantitatively and shows possibility of flame modeling using fractal parameters with statistical method. From this result more quantitative model can be derived.

  • The combustion instability acts as a serious obstacle for the lean premixed combustion of gas turbine and even causes the fatal damage to the combustor and whole system. In this experiment, the pressure fluctuation is highly related to the stabilizing position of flame and fuel injection location. The fuel injection location is connected with the convection time of the fresh mixture, which is important time scale to refresh the mixtures near the flame stabilization location. The flame is extremely unstable when the alternative stabilization occurs and bulk mode frequency (${\sim}10Hz$) of pressure fluctuation is observed in this condition. It was found that the convection time scale of the fresh reactant coincided with the time scale of the bulk mode fluctuation. Hence this phenomenon results from the local equivalence ratio change caused by the pressure fluctuation induced by thermo-acoustic effects.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of absorption coefficient models on the P1 radiation model for a premixed hydrogen flame containing the water vapor. A CFD combustion simulation analysis was performed using XiFoam, one of the open-source CFD solvers in OpenFOAM. The solver using the flamelet combustion model has been modified to implement radiative heat transfer. The absorption coefficient models used in this study the grey-mean model and constant model, and for comparison, case without radiation was added. This CFD simulation study consisted of benchmarking the THAI HD-15 and HD-22 experiments. The difference between the two tests is the inclusion of water vapor in the condition before ignition. In the case of the HD-22 experiment containing water vapor in the initial condition, the simulation results show that the grey-mean absorption coefficient model has a strong influence on the temperature decrease of the flame and on the change in pressure inside the vessel.

  • The relationship among the flame radiation, NOx emissions, residence time, and global strain rate are examined for turbulent non-premixed jet flames with wide variations in coaxial air conditions. Measurements of NOx emission, flame geometry and flame radiation were made to explain the NOx emission scaling based on global parameters such as flame residence time, global strain rate, and radiant fraction. The overall 1/2-power scaling is observed in coaxial air flames, irrespective of coaxial air conditions, but the degree of deviation from the l/2-slope curve in each case differs from one another. From the comparison between the results of pure hydrogen flames and those of helium diluted hydrogen flames, it is observed that flame radiation plays a significant role in pure hydrogen flames with coaxial air and the deviation from 1/2-power scaling may be explained in two reasons: the difference in the flame radiation and the difference in jet similarity in coaxial air flames. From the radiation measurements, more detailed explanations on these deviations were suggested.

  • This study is aiming to establish the relationship between the optical signal of flame through an optical fiber and the equivalent ratio of flame. In this experiment, flame optical signal in a furnace is measured using photodiode. The combustion system is composed of 15W turbulent burner and industrial boiler, and flame chemiluminescence is measured at various experimental conditions. In this study, the flame chemiluminescence of turbulent premixed flame is measured using commercially available photodiode. It is experimentally investigated the relationship between equivalent ratio and photodiode signal.
