  • In this study, two damage detection techniques are applied to the railway tunnel liner based on the static deformation data. Models based on uniform reduction of stiffness and smeared crack concept are both employed, and the efficiency and relative advantage are compared with each other. Numerical analyses are performed on the idealized tunnel structure and the effect of white noise, common in most measurement data, is also investigated to better understand the suitability of the proposed models. As a result, model 1 based on uniform stiffness reduction method is shown to be relatively insensitive to the noise, while model 2 with the smeared crack concept is proven to be easily applied to the field situation since the effect of stiffness reduction is rather small. Finally, real deformation data of a rail tunnel in which health monitoring system is in operation are introduced to find the possible damage and it is shown that the prediction shows quite satisfactory result.

  • Tile gust generator was designed for generating the gust field in the wind tunnel test of the scaled flexible wing model for validating gust response alleviation system. The ground operation test was performed for estimating the dynamic performance of tile gust generator before installing it in the wind tunnel for gust field measurement. The ground test results showed that the gust generator has sufficient dynamic capability to simulate the sinusoidal and random motion of the gust generator wing and thus can be used in the wind tunnel test related to gust.

  • To determine the optimum ventilation systems during long tunnel excavation, the velocity vector profile and the contaminant's distribution at working place are studied using 2-D, 3-D numerical analysis. The main results can be summarized as follow; In case of long tunnels, blower-exhaust-mixture types which enable to use soft blast ducts is most appropriate in terms of ventilation and economical efficiency. Of the same ventilation types, ventilation efficiency has a difference according to blast ducts and the distance between fan and working place. The 3-D numerical result shows that arranging blower and exhaust ducts in the right and left corners of the tunnel respectively is effective to discharge contaminant. The result of the real measurement shows that CO concentration can be reduced to below 50 ppm, which is regulation value, as 16-minutes fan operation goes on.

  • It seems inevitable for residential buildings to be high-rise and allocated near traffic roads due to the overcrowding in urban area. Acoustic environment in those area has been seriously deteriorated by the increase of traffic vehicles. Commonly used sound barriers have a limitation in controlling noise due to diffraction noise of sound barrier. Hence sound barrier is not effective to attenuate noise especially for the residential units in high level. This work aims at evaluating noise reduction according to the tunnel section shape by using 1/5 scale model. We carried out a number of field measurements for 1/5 scale model of Noise Barrier Tunnel with various sectional shape. The results from predictions and the measurement show generally good agreement.

  • A Mini-Dilution Tunnel is described as a scaled down comparision of a Standard Tunnel. The paper presents the result of experimental investigations on measuring the particulate emission of a diesel engine in a Mini and a Standard Dilution Tunnel. The result offers a contribution to understanding about the influence of several parameters including dilution ratios, mixture temperatures, mixture conditions, filter temperatures, and flow conditions. In the experiment either increasing the filter temperature and mixture temperature at a fixed dilution ratio or increasing the dilution ratio at a fixed filter temperature and mixture temperature resulted in a decrease in the total particulate mass. These changes in total particulate mass were attributed to the changes in the soluble organic fraction of the particulate sample. Also, mass differences between the Mini and the Standard Dilution Tunnel for the same engine conditions were within approximately 15% of each other.

  • This is a Double-Track Railway tunnel in typical Tae-Gu black and gray shale forming part of the No.1 Line of the Tae-Gu Subway. The main fault zone at tunnel is a moderately to highly weathered and closely jointed zone, 0.5 m wide with associated paralled jointing which is slickensided and fractured. After excavation by blasting, the soft rocks should need to be reinforced with optimal supporting pattern which might be better redesigned through the consideration of the results of in-situ rock measurements at the field. Performances fo the field tests included Point Load Test, Schmidt Hammer Test, and field joint measurement gave the detail data for the optimum support design and safe excavation of the No.1 Line of Tae-Gu Subway at the No.1-7 consturction site adn the safety of this redesigned supports system was analysed by the FDM program FLAC.

  • When a high-speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave is generated ahead of the train and propagates along the tunnel. This wave subsequently emerges form the exit portal of the tunnel, which causes an impulsive noise. In the present study, experimental investigation is carried out on the sonic boom noise with parameters of train speed, blockage ratio, nose shape of train and airshaft. These experimental results show that several countermeasures could be used to efficiently reduce the sonic boom. In addition, numerical analysis is performed to predict the sonic boom. The predicted sound waves are in a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • In general, stress measurement of existent shotcrete lining be used by pressure cells. but, measuring instrument is lost by high pressure at shotcrete lining construction and pressure cell's measurement value have to low believability by natural conditions like curing temperature. In this study, proposed techniques to measure without utilizing sensitive stress sensor in natural condition at point that want stress of shotcrete lining after shotcrete lining construction. Executed numerical analysis to forecast stress level that interact in tunnel shotcrete lining, measured strain of hole by load action through hole in shotcrete lining. 3D FEM(finite element method) is enforced through various parameters curing time of shotcrete lining, thickness, load condition. Different model cases applied by parametic study. As analysis result, it could grasp development possibility of method that propose this time because it could examine corelation with strain by near hole of shotcrete lining and stress about load condition.

  • The control and prediction of surface settlement, gradient and ground displacement are the main factors in urban tunnel construction. This paper carried out the estimation and prediction of ground behavior around tunnel due to excavation using computational method and case study in detail for the analysis of deformation behavior in urban NATM tunnel. Computational method was performed by FLAC-2D with strain softening model and elastic plastic model. Field measurements of surface subsidence and ground displacement were adopted to monitor the ground behavior resulting from the tunneling and these values were applied to modify tunnel design parameters on construction.
