  • The tactile force sensor was studied using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). The FBG is able to multiplex easily and is immune to electromagnetic environment. A sensor frame was designed to a cantilever beam type. Strain of a beam is related with the peak shift of a bragg wavelength. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for getting an appropriate thickness from 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm thick. FEM results showed that 0.3 mm thick was suitable for the force range 10 N. The force resolutions of 0.039 N and 0.113 N were obtained with optical spectrum analyser and tunable Fabry-Perot filter, respectively.

  • A voltage controlled CMOS operational transconductance amplifier (OTA), whose transconductance is directly proportional to the DC bias voltage, has been designed for many electronic circuit applications. It consists of a differential pair and three ourrent mirrors. The SPICE simulation shows that the conversion sensitivity of the OTA is 41.817 \ulcornerho/V and the linearity error is less than 0.402% over a bias voltage range from -2. OV to 1. OV. Electrically tunalble filters based on voltage controlled impedances, which are realized with OTA's, also have been designed. The SPICE simulation shows that a second-order bandpass filter, whose center frequency is 23KHz at -1. OV, has the conversion sensitivity 6.6KHz/V and the linearity error less than 0.822% over a voltage range from -2.OV tp 1.OV, Tne OTA has been laid out with the 3\ulcorner n-well CMOS design rule adopted in ISRC (inter-university semiconductor research center). The chip size was about $0.756x0.945mm^2$.

  • For the simultaneous measurement of strain and vibration signal, a fiber Bragg grating sensor system with a dual demodulator was proposed. One demodulator using a tunable Fabry-Perot filter could measure low-frequency signal such as strain and the other demodulator using a coarse wavelength division multiplexer could detect high-frequency signal such as vibration signal using intensity demodulation method. In order to measure strain and vibration of the composite main wing model under static loading a real time monitoring program was developed. Also using intensity demodulation of CWDM, sensitivity and resolution at high frequency vibration were evaluated.

  • Optical fiber gratings have been intensively studied for applications in optical fiber communications and sensor systems due to their all-fiber configuration, low insertion loss, low cost, and high flexibility. Especially, cladding mode coupling fiber devices such as long period gratings (LPG) and acousto-optic tunable filters (AOTF) have been developed as a gain equalization filter in erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) for wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems$^{(1-2)}$ . • In this study, a novel method for sweeping automatic linearization of wavelength swept laser is proposed. Through the test performed on the implemented laser, the linear sweeping is held up well with a 97% decrease in nonlinearity, and 60 nm sweeping range, 1 kHz sweeping frequency, and 8.8 mW average optical power were obtained. The proposed method uses fiber Bragg grating array, optical-electronic conversion circuit, FPGA embedded module, and a LabVIEW program to generate new compensated wave patterns which were applied to the fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter. Linear sweeping can reduce the cumbersome and time-consuming recalibration process required for nonlinear sweeping. Additionally, the proposed method provides more accurate measurement results for the structure safety monitoring system.

  • We show that the microstrip ring with a narrow gap exhibits a photonic band gap (PBG) that is generally believed to be created by a periodic array. The discontinuity of impedance at the narrow gap induces the multiple reflections with fixed phase correlation necessary to make the PBG. We have also discussed the tuning of the PBG frequency by applying an external voltage on a varactor mounted on the gap and the applications of this PBG ring as a tunable bandstop filter and a microwave switch.

  • In this paper, the swept source-optical coherence tomography system using frequency domain mode locked(FDML) laser has realized. The FDML swept source laser showed 55.03 kHz sweeping speed, 125 nm sweeping range, and 9 mW output optical power, which are the superiority of FDML laser compared to previous swept source lasers. Also, through the cross-sectional image captured at 5 frames per second for a mirror, a 1 mm-thickness glass plate, and a thumb bottom, the performance of the system has demonstrated.

  • A new, simple lasing loop configuration employing a fiber grating was proposed and demonstrated for all-optical gain control of erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The lasing loop was designed such that the fiber grating acts as a notch filter to cutoff the lasing light as well as selects the lasing wavelength. The operating gain was clamped to the same level as the loop loss and it could be varied with a tunable directional coupler in the loop. It is believed that this type of gain-controlled erbiumdoped fiber amplifier can have several advantages when used in wavelength-division-multiplexed transmission systems.

  • We report the development of full-field swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) in the wavelength range of 815-870 nm using a unique combination of super-luminescent diode (SLD) as broad-band light source and acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) as a frequency-scanning device. Some new applications of full-field SS-OCT in forensic sciences and engineering materials have been demonstrated. Results of simultaneous topography and tomography of latent fingerprints, silicon microelectronic circuits and composite materials are presented. The main advantages of the present system are completely non-mechanical scanning, wide-field, compact and low-cost.
