  • Tsunami forces acting on coastal structures have not been relatively much paid attention by researchers. However, they should be appropriately reflected in design of coastal and harbor facilities. The temporary and permanent tsunami shelters have to be chosen to resist stably against unexpected tsunami forces. There have been only few numerical studies on the tsunami forces acting on coastal and harbor structures. In this study, a practical prediction of tsunami forces is carried out by using a two-dimensional numerical model.

  • The Korea Meteorological Administration has been operating a tsunami warning system which is based on tsunami scenario database for the East Sea. Recently, the tsunami scenario database for the Yellow sea and the East China sea is also generated so that the tsunami warning system is extended to the whole Korean seas. Tsunami scenario database includes tsunami arrival times and heights generated by performing huge numbers of tsunami propagation simulations. A leap-frog method for shallow water equation is used for the simulation. The simulation code is parallellized via Message Passing Interface and has run on Cray X1E.

  • In this study, the numerical model for simulation of tsunamis is constructed by using the dispersion-correction scheme, 2nd upwind scheme, dynamic linking method, and so forth. The composed numerical model is used to simulate a hitorical tsunami event. The target tsunami event is the 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami. And, the predicted run-up heights of the tsunami at Imwon port are very reasonable compared to available observed data.

  • The initial free surface profile and energy of a tsunami are closely related to the wave heights of a tsunami in nearshore and can be determined by using the earthquake parameters. Along the Western coast of Japan, the possibility of a tsunami triggering by undersea earthquakes is very high. Many seismologists have attempted to predict the parameters of earthquakes that could occur in these regions, but it is difficult to accurately predict them. As such, several case studies have been conducted involving behaviors of an unexpected tsunami that occurred in this region. If a relationship between the earthquake parameters and the wave heights of a tsunami is found, it would be easier to examine the effects of the tsunami. In this study, several virtual tsunami events have been simulated, and the wave heights of the tsunami are computed by varying the earthquake parameters to examine the relationship between the earthquake parameters and the tsunami wave heights. Numerical simulations have been conducted in virtual topography.

  • The Tohoku earthquake (Mw9.0) occurred on March 11, 2011 and caused a large tsunami. The Fukushima Dai-ichi NPP (F1-NPP) were overwhelmed by the tsunami and core damage occurred. This paper describes the overview of F1-NPP accident and the usability of tsunami PRA at Tohoku earthquake. The paper makes reference to the following current issues: influence on seismic hazard of gigantic aftershocks and triggered earthquakes, concepts for evaluating core damage frequency considering common cause failure with correlation coefficient against seismic event at multi units and sites, and concepts of "seismic-tsunami PSA" considering a combination of seismic motion and tsunami effects.

  • Recently, many tsunamis triggered by impulsive undersea ground motions occurred in subduction zones around the Pacific Ocean area including the East Sea surrounded by Korea, Japan and Russia. The wave height of a tsunami may be in the order of several meters, while the wavelength can be up to 1,000 km in the ocean, where the average water depth is about 4 km. A tsunami could cause a severe coastal flooding and property damage not only at neighboring countries but also at distant countries. A fundamental and economic way to mitigate unusual tsunami attacks is to construct tsunami hazard maps along coastal areas vulnerable to tsunami flooding. These maps should be developed based on the historical tsunami events and projected scenarios. The map could be used to make evacuation plans in the event of a real tsunami assault.

  • The present study numerically investigated the influence of the waveform distribution on the tsunami-vegetation interaction using a non-reflected wave generation system for various tsunami waveforms in a two-dimensional numerical wave tank. First, it was possible to determine the wave attenuation mechanism due to the tsunami-vegetation interaction from the spatial waveform, flow field, vorticity field, and wave height distribution. The combination of fluid resistance in the vegetation and a large gap and creates a vortex according to the flow velocity difference in and out of the vegetation zone. Thus, the energy of a tsunami was increasingly reduced, resulting in a gradual reduction in wave height. Compared to existing approximation theories, the double volumetric ratio of the waveform increased the reflection coefficient of the tsunami-vegetation interaction by 34%, while decreasing the transfer coefficient and energy attenuation coefficient by 25% and 13%, respectively. Therefore, the hydraulic characteristics of a tsunami is highly likely to be underestimated if the solitary wave of the approximation theory is applied for the tsunami.

  • The earthquake parameters are known to be responsible for determination of the initial free surface profiles of tsunamis. This study investigates the effects of earthquake parameters to variation of initial free surface profiles of tsunamis triggered by an impulsive undersea earthquake. The target event is the 1983 Central East Sea Tsunami recorded as the most devastating tsunami in Korea during last several decades. Among the earthquake parameters, the strike angle may play a most significant role in determining the initial free surface.

  • In this study, new dispersion-correction terms are added to leap-frog finite difference scheme for the linear shallow-water equations with the purpose of considering the dispersion effects of the linear Boussinesq equations for the propagation of tsunamis. The new model is applied to near Gadeok island in Pusan about The Central East Sea Tsunami in 1983 and The Hokkaldo Nansei Oki Earthquake Tsunami in 1993 one simulated in the study.

  • The field survey of a tsunami damage is carried out to collect and obtain real data. There data can be used to make the countermeasures against possible tsunami attackings. In the survey, many data collecting techniques such as interviewing with local people, taking pictures of the inundated field, recording the location by the GPS, measuring the level and distance of the maximum flood level can be used for practical and effective survey.
