Many circular distributions are known to be not only asymmetric but also bimodal. Hidden truncation method of generating asymmetric distribution is applied to a bivariate circular distribution to generate an asymmetric circular distribution. While many other existing asymmetric circular distributions can only model an asymmetric data, this new circular model has great flexibility in terms of asymmetry and bi-modality. Some properties of the new model, such as the trigonometric moment generating function, and asymptotic inference about the truncation parameter are presented. Simulation and real data examples are provided at the end to demonstrate the utility of the novel distribution.
In Fourier magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the number of phase encoded signals is often reduced to minimize the duration of the studies and maintain adequate signal-to-noise ratio. However, this results in the well-known truncation artifact, whose effect manifests itself as blurring and ringing in the image domain. In this paper, we propose a new regularization method in the context of a Bayesian framework to reduce truncation artifact. Since the truncation artifact appears in t도 phase direction only, the use of conventional piecewise-smoothness constraints with symmetric neighbors may result in the loss of small details and soft edge structures in the read direction. Here, we propose more elaborate forms of constraints than the conventional piecewise-smoothness constraints, which can capture actual spatial information about the MR images. Our experimental results indicate that the proposed method not only reduces the truncation artifact, but also improves tissue regularity and boundary definition without oversmoothing soft edge regions.

In this paper we derive a Berry-Esseen type bound for the kernel density estimator of a random left truncated model, in which each datum (Y) is randomly left truncated and is sampled if $Y{\geq}T$, where T is the truncation random variable with an unknown distribution. This unknown distribution is estimated with the Lynden-Bell estimator. In particular the normal approximation rate, by choice of the bandwidth, is shown to be close to $n^{-1/6}$ modulo logarithmic term. We have also investigated this normal approximation rate via a simulation study.

The method of Rankine source distribution is emerging as a powerful yet simple alternative for the solution of complicated free surface problems. But it has been uncertain whether the radiation condition could be satisfied exactly by distributing the simple sources on the free surface only. In this paper, it is proved rigorously that the Rankine sources, whose intensities are varying sinusoidally along the axis satisfying the free surface boundary condition, generate the radiation waves both in the infinite and finite-depth flows. A formula is derived to give the upper and lower bounds of the errors in the induced velocity computation that will be introduced by truncating the extent of source distribution on the free surface. Since the truncation is inevitable in the numerical analysis, this formula may be used as a criterion to limit the position of the field points, where velocity computation is made, away from the truncation boundary. A typical analysis shows that the maximum error will be 3.4 percent of the exact induced velocity when the field point is on the free surface two wave lengths away from the truncation boundary.
Not all loads contribute to fatigue crack propagation in the welded detail of steel bridges when they are subjected to variable amplitude loading. For fatigue assessment, therefore, non-contributing stress cycles should be truncated. However, stress range truncation is not considered during typical fatigue reliability assessment. When applying the first order reliability method, stress range truncation occurs mismatch between the expected number of cycles to failure and the number of cycles obtained at the time of evaluation, because the expected number of cycles only counts the stress cycles that contribute to fatigue crack growth. Herein, we introduce a calibration factor to coordinate the expected number of cycles to failure to the equivalent value which includes both contributing and non-contributing stress cycles. The effectiveness of stress range truncation and the proposed calibration factor was validated via case studies.

The performance of evolutionary algorithms can be seriously weakened when constraints limit the feasible region of the search space. In this paper we present a constrained multi-objective optimization algorithm based on adaptive ε-truncation (ε-T-CMOA) to further improve distribution and convergence of the obtained solutions. First of all, as a novel constraint handling technique, ε-truncation technique keeps an effective balance between feasible solutions and infeasible solutions by permitting some excellent infeasible solutions with good objective value and low constraint violation to take part in the evolution, so diversity is improved, and convergence is also coordinated. Next, an exponential variation is introduced after differential mutation and crossover to boost the local exploitation ability. At last, the improved crowding density method only selects some Pareto solutions and near solutions to join in calculation, thus it can evaluate the distribution more accurately. The comparative results with other state-of-the-art algorithms show that ε-T-CMOA is more diverse than the other algorithms and it gains better in terms of convergence in some extent.
Four truncation selection schemes (SSs) were framed to predict and compare the age structures and genetic responses under the influence of various factor employing the scheme-specific algorithms. Two paths of selection, sires (bulls' sires) and dams (bulls' dams) to breed young bulls were considered. Among variable factors, four levels (0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9) of precision of evaluation, five levels (0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 genetic standard deviation) of genetic differences among age classes and 4 levels of proportions selected (for bulls' sire, 0.05, 0.10, 0.125, 0.25, and for bulls' dams 0.02, 0.04, 0.05, and 0.10) contemplated on both paths of selection. The number of age classes for bulls' dams and bulls' sires were 4 or 8 and 2 or 4, respectively. The stayability across age classes for bulls' dams was assumed to be 0.80 or 0.60. The candidates for selection for bulls' sires were equally distributed (0.5 or 0.25) across the age classes. The SS1 (selection on same proportions as candidates' distribution) revealed longest generation lengths and lowest yearly genetic responses. The average ages were youngest and yearly genetic responses were highest in SS4 (selection at each age-specific truncation point with the same average genetic superiority of selected parents across the ages) and followed by SS3 (selection at each agespecific truncation point with same predicted genetic values) and SS2 (selection at common truncation point on phenotypic values) in a population with overlapping generations. The results revealed the importance of choosing suitable selection scheme to acquire maximum yearly genetic responses especially when the genetic differences among age classes are large and the precision of evaluation is relatively low.
This study is to investigate the recurrence possibility of consecutive dry years such as the long dry period around 1900 in the annual rainfall data at Seoul station. The truncation levels, as the criterion for the dry years, are decided such as to make the occurrence of dry years follow the Poissonian distribution, which assures independent occurrence of dry years. For the truncation level of mean-0.5stdv, the occurrence of dry years is found to satisfy the Poissonian distribution weakly with 99% significance level, but for those of mean-0.75stdv and mean-stdv with 95% significance level. For these truncation levels, the long dry period around 1900 is divided into several short consecutive dry years. The Poisson process has then been applied to derive the occurrence probability of consecutive dry years. For the truncation level of mean-0.75stdv or below, the Poisson process was found to reproduce similar occurrence probabilities to the observed. Especially for the lowest truncation level used in the study (mean-stdv), we could see that the occurrence probability of consecutive dry years estimated for the data collected before the long dry period around 1900 was higher that those for the data collected after the long dry period, thus, it could be concluded that the possibility of long dry periods is decreasing recently.cently.
There is an extensive literature on retrial queueing models. While a majority of the literature on retrial queueing models focuses on the retrial times to be exponentially distributed (so as to keep the state space to be of a reasonable size), a few papers deal with nonexponential retrial times but with some additional restrictions such as constant retrial rate, only the customer at the head of the retrial queue will attempt to capture a free server, 2-state phase type distribution, and finite retrial orbit. Generally, the retrial queueing models are analyzed as level-dependent queues and hence one has to use some type of a truncation method in performing the analysis of the model. In this paper we study a retrial queueing model with threshold-type policy for orbiting customers in the context of nonexponential retrial times. Using matrix-analytic methods we analyze the model and compare with the classical retrial queueing model through a few illustrative numerical examples. We also compare numerically our threshold retrial queueing model with a previously published retrial queueing model that uses a truncation method.
In the analysis, monthly streamflow records atthe gauging station in Nakdong, Han and Geum river were used. Also, the fitness of monthly streamflow to Gamma and Long-normal distribution was tested by Kolomogorv-Smirnov test. The results obtained in this study can be summarized as follws (1) The fitness of monthly streamflow to two-parameter Gamma distribution was tested by Kolomorov-Smirnov test, which fits well to this Gamma distribution (2) The Run-length and Run-sum were simulated by the Gamma model. In this result, run-length and Run-sum of monthly streamflow were fit for Gamma model (3) The mean decreases (increases) the expected surplus (deficit) Run-Sum of the monthly streamflow. The higher the truncation level of negative Run-length and Run-sum the larger is the effect of mean.
