Traditional trip tables are estimated through large-scale surveys such as household survey, roadside interviews, and license Plate matching. These methods are, however, expensive and time consuming. This paper presents two origin-destination (OD) trip matrix estimation methods from link traffic counts in stochastic assignment, which contains perceived errors of drivers for alternatives. The methods are formulated based on the relation between link flows and OD demands in logit formula. The first method can be expressed to minimize the difference between observed link flows and estimated flows, derived from traffic assignment and be solved by gradient method. The second method can be formulated based on dynamic process, which nay describe the daily movement patterns of drivers and be solved by a recursive equation. A numerical example is used for assessing the methods, and shows the performances and properties of the models.

More practical outputs and insights can be obtained through transportation analysis considering the time-dependent traffic movements. This study proposes a method of constructing time-dependent O-D trip tables for expressway corridor using real-world individual trip data. In this study, time-dependent O-D trip tables for the nationwide highway network are constructed based on toll collection system data. The proposed methodology is to convert nationwide time-dependent O-D trip tables into Korean expressway corridor O-D trip tables in order to deal with the computational complexity arising from simulating a large-scale traffic network. The experiment results suggest that actual individual trip record data can be used to effectively construct time-dependent O-D trip tables. They also imply that the construction of time-dependent O-D trip tables for the national highway networks along with those for Korean expressway developed in this study would make transportation analysis more practical and applicable to real-time traffic operation and control.

Understanding accurate traffic performance is crucial for ensuring efficient highway operation and providing a sustainable mobility environment. On the other hand, an immediate and precise estimation of highway traffic performance faces challenges because of infrastructure and technological constraints, data processing complexities, and limitations in using integrated big data. This paper introduces a framework for estimating traffic performance by analyzing real-time data sourced from toll collection systems and dedicated short-range communications used on highways. In particular, this study addresses the data errors arising from segmented information in data, influencing the individual travel trajectories of vehicles and establishing a more reliable Origin-Destination (OD) framework. The study revealed the necessity of trip linkage for accurate estimations when consecutive segments of individual vehicle travel within the OD occur within a 20-minute window. By linking these trip ODs, the daily average highway traffic performance for South Korea was estimated to be248,624 thousand vehicle kilometers per day. This value shows an increase of approximately 458 thousand vehicle kilometers per day compared to the 248,166 thousand vehicle kilometers per day reported in the highway operations manual. This outcome highlights the potential for supplementing previously omitted traffic performance data through the methodology proposed in this study.
The Metropolitan Areas have experienced the phenomenon that some of their peripheral parts emerged as a core business area because of the relocation of residential and economic activities from the central area. An important phenomenon in the spatial transformation of metropolitan area is the weakening of centrality in the center and the increasing strength of centrality in the periphery. This paper examined the changing patterns of spatial interaction in the Seoul Metropolitan area through an analysis on outflow trips. Outflow trip by Seoul decreased in nearby regions and increased in remote regions, however as times goes by, the spatial patterns of the largest outflow trip destination were diversified and the rate of outflow trip to Seoul has decreased in the periphery regions. This research reveals that the most remarkable changes of spatial interactions occurred nearby regions of Seoul and also the changes of outflow trip by Seoul was also distinct. In relation to this, the results arising from the similarity analysis by the variance of trip clearly show the changing spatial patterns of interaction in Yongin, Seoul, Suwon and Hwaseong.
In this study, a mobility analysis method is suggested to estimate an O/D trip demand estimation using Mobile Phone Signaling Data. Using mobile data based on mobile base station location information, a trip chain database was established for each person and daily traffic patterns were analyzed. In addition, a new algorithm was developed to determine the traffic characteristics of their mobilities. To correct the ping pong handover problem of communication data itself, the methodology was developed and the criteria for stay time was set to distinguish pass by between stay within the influence area. The big-data based method is applied to analyze the mobility pattern in inter-regional trip and intra-regional trip in both of an urban area and a rural city. When comparing it with the results with traditional methods, it seems that the new methodology has a possibility to be applied to the national survey projects in the future.
Dynamic origin-destination (OD) trip matrix has been widely used for transportation fields such as dynamic traffic assignment, traffic operation and travel demand management, which needs precise OD trip matrix to be collected. This paper presents a quasi-dynamic OD matrix estimation model and applies it to real road network for collecting the dynamic OD matrix. The estimation model combined with dynamic traffic assignment program, DYNASMART-P, is based on GPS embedded in PDA, which developed for collecting sample dynamic OD matrix. The sample OD matrix should be expanded by the value of optimal sampling ratio calculated from minimization program. From application to real network of Jeju, we confirm that the model and its algorithm produce a reasonable solution.

The purpose of this study is to propose mining processes in the large trip-transaction database of the Metropolitan Seoul area and to analyze the spatial characteristics of travel behavior. For the purpose. this study introduces a mining algorithm developed for exploring trip patterns from the large trip-transaction database produced every day by transit users in the Metropolitan Seoul area. The algorithm computes trip chains of transit users by using the bus routes and a graph of the subway stops in the Seoul subway network. We explore the transfer frequency of the transit users in their trip chains in a day transaction database of three different years. We find the number of transit users who transfer to other bus or subway is increasing yearly. From the trip chains of the large trip-transaction database, trip patterns are mined to analyze how transit users travel in the public transportation system. The mining algorithm is a kind of level-wise approaches to find frequent trip patterns. The resulting frequent patterns are illustrated to show top-ranked subway stations and bus stops in their supports. From the outputs, we explore the travel patterns of three different time zones in a day. We obtain sufficient differences in the spatial structures in the travel patterns of origin and destination depending on time zones. In order to examine the changes in the travel patterns along time, we apply the algorithm to one day data per year since 2004. The results are visualized by utilizing GIS, and then the spatial characteristics of travel patterns are analyzed. The spatial distribution of trip origins and destinations shows the sharp distinction among time zones.

Traffic demand prediction result is a primary factor for decision making such as the traffic planning and operation. The existing traffic demand prediction 4-step model only covers the trip between the origin and the destination, and not the demand followed by the accessibility improvement, due to the characteristic of this model. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to improve the limitations of the existing model by developing the inter-city trip generation and trip distribution model with more accessibility. After calculating of the trip generation and trip distribution model with more accessibility, the sign of the accessibility coefficient was positive. Commuting was the most insensitive indicator, affected by external factors among the other trip purposes. The leisure trip was the most sensitive, affected by the trip fee. According to the result of comparison with each of estimated model and observational data, it was certain that the reliability and assumption of the model have been improved by discovering the reduced weighted average error rate, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and total error through the model with more accessibility compared with the existing one.

While various factors in passenger and freight demand analysis affect on destination choice, a key factor, in general. is an attractiveness measure by size variable (e.g., population. employment etc) in destination zone. In order to measure the attractiveness, some empirical studies suggested that disaggregate gravity model are more suitable than aggregate gravity model. This study proposes that truck travelers trip diary data among Korean commodity flow data could be used to estimate the behaviors of incorporating trip departure time, activity duration and attractiveness in destination. As a result, the main findings of size and distance variables coincide with the conventional gravity model having a positive effect of population variable and a negative effect of distance variable. Due to disaggregate gravity modeling, the unique findings of this study reports that small trucks are more likely to choose short distance and early morning, morning peak and afternoon peak departure time choice. On the other hand, large trucks are more likely to choose long distance and night time departure time choice.
In the transportation planning process, origin and destination(O-D) trip matrix is one of the most important elements. There have been developments and applications of the methodology to adjust old matrices using link traffic counts. Commonly, the accuracy of an adjusted O-D matrix depends very much on the reliability of the input data such as the numbers and locations of traffic counting points in the road network. In the real application of the methodology, decisions on the numbers and locations of traffic counting points are one of the difficult problems, because usually as networks become bigger, the numbers of traffic counting points are required more. Therefore, this paper investigates these issues as an experiment using a nationwide network in Korea. We have compared and contrasted the set of link flows assigned by the old and the adjusted O-D matrices with the set of observed link flows. It has been analyzed by increasing the number of the traffic counting points on the experimental road network. As a result of these analyses, we can see an optimal set of the number of counting links through statistical analysis, which are approximately ten percentages of the total link numbers. In addition, the results show that the discrepancies between the old and the adjusted matrices in terms of the trip length frequency distributions and the assigned and the counted link flows are minimized using the optimal set of the counted links.
