  • This experiment was conducted to determine effects of trenching depth on characteristics and yield of tubers in Chinese yam (Dioscorea opposita Thunb). Self-propelled trencher, ‘NF-827H’ produced by KAWABE company, was used for trenching. When trenched, tuber's length and weight were longer and heavier, tuber's shape was better, and marketable tuber yield was remarkably increased than those of conventional plowing and soil preparation by a tractor. The size and yield of tubers were greatly enhanced by trenching in long-tuber variety than that in short-tuber variety. The depth of trenching is recommended to be more than 60cm for short-tuber variety and more than 80cm for long-tuber variety considering the size, shape and yield of the tllbers.

  • The demand for subsea cables and pipelines that transfer marine energy resources onshore has recently increased. Laying these underground after trenching is one engineering method to stabilize exposed subsea cables and pipelines. This experimental study found the optimum conditions for operating two types of waterjet arms mounted on an ROV trencher. A waterjet arm for trenching the seabed was scaled down at a ratio of 1:6, and a comparative analysis was conducted using diverse parameters. The results of this research provide a practical fundamental database to assist in making decisions about the ROV trencher performance in advance.

  • There is drift toward moving offshore structures operating sites to deep water that brings subsea systems and types of apparatus to meet more severe environment than onshore. At this moment, climatic condition and seabed state affect trenching efficiency so trenching process is need to make steady progress in a short time. This paper is research on estimation about construction performance of waterjet trenching machine mounted on ROV trencher. Optimal number of nozzles that can maximize trenching efficiency is selected by considering clearance and angle of nozzles through CFD. Then verified effectiveness of waterjet apparatus on the result of trenching depth and velocity by model test analogized performance for construction work of waterjet trenching machine.

  • This experiment was designed to establish the soil physical improvement practice to increase the rice yields at fine textured fluvio-marine paddy field. After chiseling and trenching the paddy soil, the rice growth and soil physical properties were investigated for 4 years. The results are summarize as follows; 1. The soil physical properties, such as bulk density, hardness, porosity and permeability were prominently improved by trenching and chiseling. 2. There were significant relationships among the soil physical properties, root developments and rice yields. 3. The increasing rates of rice yields by soil physical improvement were about 10%, which is better than 5% of drainage effects. 4. The effects of trenching and chiseling on rice yields were continued to fourth year. Even if trenching effects was better than chiseling the chiseling was considered as a useful treatment for its simple working practice by using a heavy machine. 5. In case of trenching, straw application were increased the rice yields.

  • The purpose of this paper os to present and discuss some of flow and drain observed in modelling results. Because dredged fill ground of Yul-Chon located in the south coast of Korea is very soft, this ground should be improved after operation of surface stabilization. There are surface stabilization method such as chemical stabilization, desiccation, horizontally vacuum drain, replacement, and geosynthetics. In Yul-Chon, PTM(Progressive Trenching Method) is adopted to provide the necessity condition of surface desiccation. In the case trench in the dredged soft ground is formed by PTM equipment, pore water in the ground is drained through trench. There, drain and desiccation of surface ground increase, and bearing capacity is improved. In this research, when trench in the dredged soft ground is formed by PTM equipment, permeable characteristics and drain efficiency of pore-water are analyzed using SEEP/W software package. Results show variation of total head, pressure head, flux, hydraulic gradient, and flow quantity.

  • We review three methods of separating soil respiration into root and soil microbial contribution: (1) component integration, (2) root exclusion, and (3) isotopic method. Among these methods, component integration and root exclusion are most commonly used. Root respiration contribution to soil respiration estimated by the root exclusion method is higher than those by other two methods. Trenching has little environmental disturbances in soil or on surface of site compared to other methods in root exclusion such as root removal and gap formation. Isotopic method has an advantage over other methods because of minimal soil and root disturbances, but this method is costly and requires techniques for the complex analysis. Trenching seems to be an appropriate in situ method for calculating component contributions to soil respiration with minimum disturbances in site. However, the method overestimates the contribution of microbial respiration because of root decay, and realistic results could be obtained by estimating root decay or avoiding large roots in trenched plots.

  • This study was conducted to find out the soil $CO_2$ emission characteristic due to rain fall pattern and intensity changes. Using Automatic Opening and Closing Chambers (AOCCs), we have measured annual soil respiration changes in Pinus koraiensis plantation at Seoul National University experimental forest in Mt. Taehwa. In addition, we have monitored heterotrophic respiration at trenching sites ($4{\times}6m$). Based on the one year data of soil respiration and heterotrophic respiration, we observed that 24% of soil respiration was derived from root respiration. During the rainy season (end of July to September), soil respiration at trenching site and trenching with rainfall interception site were measure during portable soil respiration analyzer (GMP343, Vaisala, Helsinki, Finland). Surprisingly, even after days of continuous heavy rain, soil water content did not exceed 20%. Based on this observation, we suggest that the maximum water holding capacity is about 20%, and relatively lower soil water contents during the dry season affect the vital degree of trees and soil microbe. As for soil respiration under different rain intensity, it was increased about 14.4% under 10 mm precipitation. But the high-intensity rain condition, such as more than 10 mm precipitation, caused the decrease of soil respiration up to 25.5%. Taken together, this study suggests that the pattern of soil respiration can be regulated by not only soil temperature but also due to the rain fall intensity.

  • This study was intended to measure and analyze hand-transmitted vibrations from cultivator in idle and operation modes for three different types of field works. Based on this analysis a time for the white finger syndrome to appear on 10% of the operators was estimated assuming that their daily exposure is 3 hours. The 4 methods to reduce the hand vibration were also proposed and compared with each other. The results of the study were summarized as follows : The highest vibration level was recorded during trenching operation, resulting in a total average vibration of 11.5 m/s$^2$. Followings were 7.6 m/s$^2$ during rotary tillage and 7.0 m/s$^2$ for weeding. When exposed to these levels of vibrations three hours a day, the white finger syndrome is likely to appear in 4 years for trenching, 6.2 years for rotary tillage and 6.8 years for weeding operations. Isolation of hand vibration performed by a rubber pad, anti-vibration gloves, a handle anti-vibration device and engine mounts were respectively 15.7%, 16.5%. 26.1% and 27.0%, resulting in most effective methods of the handle anti-vibration device and engine mounts. A better performance of about 33.9% was achieved when both the handle anti-vibration device and engine mounts were used.
