This paper presents a new laminated plate theory for the cylindrical bending of laminated plated. The theory assumes that in plane displacements vary exponentially through plate thickness. Analytical solutions are derived for simply supported plates subjected to transverse loading. The accuracy of the present theory is examined for unsymmetric laminates, and the numerical results are compared with three-dimensional elasticity solutions of Pagano. The present theory predicts displacements and stresses for very thick plates very accurately. In particular, transverse shear stresses obtained form constitutive equations are predicted very accurately.
In a whole variety of higher order plate theories existing in the literature no consideration is given to the transverse normal strain / deformation effects on flexural response when these higher order theories are applied to shear flexible composite plates in view of minimizing the number of unknown variables. The objective of this study is to carry out cylindrical bending of simply supported laminated composite and sandwich plates using sinusoidal shear and normal deformation plate theory. The most important feature of the present theory is that it includes the effects of transverse normal strain/deformation. The displacement field of the presented theory is built upon classical plate theory and uses sine and cosine functions in terms of thickness coordinate to include the effects of shear deformation and transverse normal strain. The theory accounts for realistic variation of the transverse shear stress through the thickness and satisfies the shear stress free conditions at the top and bottom surfaces of the plate without using the problem dependent shear correction factor. Governing equations and boundary conditions of the theory are obtained using the principle of minimum potential energy. The accuracy of the proposed theory is examined for several configurations of laminates under various static loadings. Some problems are presented for the first time in this paper which can become the base for future research. For the comparison purpose, the numerical results are also generated by using higher order shear deformation theory of Reddy, first-order shear deformation plate theory of Mindlin and classical plate theory. The numerical results show that the present theory provides displacements and stresses very accurately as compared to those obtained by using other theories.

In this paper, an systematic approach is presented, in which the mixed variational theorem is employed to incorporate independent transverse shear stresses into a classical higher-order shear deformation theory(HSDT). The HSDT displacement field is taken to amplify the benefits of using a classical shear deformation theory such as simple and straightforward calculation and numerical efficiency. Those independent transverse shear stresses are taken from the fifth-order polynomial-based zig-zag theory where the fourth-order transverse shear strains can be obtained. The classical displacement field and independent transverse shear stresses are systematically blended via the mixed variational theorem. Resulting strain energy expressions are named as an enhanced higher-order shear deformation theory via mixed variational theorem(EHSDTM). The EHSDTM possess the same computational advantage as the classical HSDT while allowing for improved through-the-thickness stress and displacement variations via the post-processing procedure. Displacement and stress distributions obtained herein are compared to those of the classical HSDT, three-dimensional elasticity, and available data in literature.

This paper presents a model for evaluating the contribution by arch action and frame action to shear resistance in shear-critical reinforced concrete beams without stirrup. The rotating angle softened truss model is employed to calculate the shear deformation of the web and the relative axial displacement of the compression and tension chord by the shear flow are also calculated. From this shear compatibility condition in a beam, the shear contribution by the arch action is numerically decoupled. The transverse strain obtained from the proposed model is selected for shear failure criterion. Using the failure criterion, shear strength of RC slender beams without stirrup is predicted.
Beams strengthened in shear with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) which had different transverse reinforcement ratio were tested to evaluate shear contribution in the CFRP and to analyze shear behavior of each test with Mohr's circle. Strain in the CFRP should be evaluated to estimate the shear contribution in the CFRP which is brittle material. Test results were compared each other based on the Mohr's circle which can correlate shear strain with both principal tensile strain and crack angle. With low transverse steel ratio, shear strengthening with CFRP not only increases the shear strength effectively but also minimizes the loss in shear contribution of concrete by limiting the development of crack. With high transverse steel ratio, the effect on shear strengthening with CFRP is not as much as the beam with low ratio. Therefore, the shear contribution in the CFRP should be evaluated based on the strain compatibility which can consider the interaction between steel and CFRP when determining the shear capacity of a strengthened member.
In this study, a simplified method of improving not only transverse shear stress but also shear strain based on the first-order shear deformation theory was developed. Unlike many established methods, such as the higher-order shear deformation and layerwise theories, this method can easily apply to finite elements as only $C^0$ continuity is necessary and the formulation of equations is very simple. The basic concept in this method, however, must be corrected:the distribution of the transverse shear stresses and shear strains through the thickness from the formulation based on the higher-order shear deformation theory. Therefore, the shear correction factors are no longer required, based on the first-order shear deformation theory. Numerical analyses were conducted to verify the validity of the proposed formulations. The solutions based on the simplified method were in very good agreement with the results considering the higher-order shear deformation theory.
In this study, the pullout tests are conducted to evaluate pullout resistance of steel strip reinforcement with transverse members. The test results are compared with theoretical equations and then the failure mechanism of transverse members is evaluated. The bearing resistance stress(${\sigma}^{\prime}_b$) of transverse members, which is applied pullout force at 50mm displacement, is closed from punching shear failure to general shear failure. The behavior by increment of a number of transverse members became closer to general shear failure. The behavior of transverse members at maximum pullout force, which is closed to general shear failure, is indicated that it is unrelated to normal stress and a number of transverse members. However, if the allowable displacement of reinforced soil wall is considered, it is impossible to apply in design. The test results are compared with bearing resistance evaluations using Prandtl's plastic theory and cylindrical cavity expansion theory. The analysis results are indicated that the bearing resistance by pullout tests is closed to predicted result by Prandtl's plastic theory, which are located between general shear failure and punching shear failure.
Tests were conducted on two partially pre-stressed concrete solid beams subjected to combined loading of bending, shear and torsion. The beams were designed using the Direct Design Method which is based on the Lower Bound Theorem of the Theory of Plasticity. Both beams were of $300{\times}300mm$ cross-section and 3.8 m length. The two main variables studied were the ratio of the maximum shear stress due to the twisting moment, to the shear stress arising from the shear force, which was varied between 0.69 and 3.04, and the ratio of the maximum twisting moment to the maximum bending moment which was varied between 0.26 and 1.19. The required reinforcement from the Direct Design Method was compared with requirements from the ACI and the BSI codes. It was found that, in the case of bending dominance, the required longitudinal reinforcements from all methods were close to each other while the BSI required much larger transverse reinforcement. In the case of torsion dominance, the BSI method required much larger longitudinal and transverse reinforcement than the both the ACI and the DDM methods. The difference in the transverse reinforcement is more pronounce. Experimental investigation showed good agreement between design and experimental failure loads of the beams designed using the Direct Design Method. Both beams failed within an acceptable range of the design loads and underwent ductile behaviour up to failure. The results indicate that the Direct Design Method can be successfully used to design partially prestressed concrete solid beams which cater for the combined effect of bending, shear and torsion loads.
This paper presents critical buckling loads of laminated composites under cylindrical bending. In-plane displacements are assumed to vary exponentially through plate thickness. The accuracy of this theory is examined for symmetric/antisymmetric cross-ply, angle-ply and unsymmetric laminates under cylindrical bending. Analytical solutions are provided to investigate the effect of transverse shear deformation on critical buckling loads of the laminated plates, and the results are compared with those obtained from the first-order shear deformation plate theory and the classical laminated plate theory.

The basis of capacity design has been explicitly or implicitly regulated in most bridge design specifications. It is to guarantee ductile failure of entire bridge system by preventing brittle failure of pier members and any other structural members until the columns provides fully enough plastic rotation capacity. Brittle shear is regarded as a mode of failure that should be avoided in reinforced concrete bridge pier design. To provide ductility behavior of column, the one of important factors is that flexural hinge of column must be detailed to ensure adequate and dependable shear strength and deformation capacity. Eight small scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with 4.5 aspect ratio. The test variables are longitudinal steel ratio, transverse steel ratio, and axial load ratio. Eight flexurally dominated columns were tested. In all specimens, initial flexural-shear cracks occurred at 1.5% drift ratio. The multiple flexural-shear crack width and length gradually increased until the final stage. The angles of the major inclined cracks measured from the vertical column axis ranged between 42 and 48 degrees. In particular, this study focused on assessing transverse reinforcement contribution to the column shear strength. Transverse reinforcement contribution measured during test. Each three components of transverse reinforcement contribution, axial force contribution and concrete contribution were investigated and compared. It was assessed that the concrete stresses of all specimen were larger than stress limit of Korea Bridge Design Specifications.
