  • The limitation of telegrapher's equations for analysis of nonuniform transmission lines is investigated here. It is shown theoretically that the input impedance of a nonuniform transmission line cannot be derived uniquely from the Riccati equation only except for the exponential transmission line of a particular frequency-dependent taper. As an example, the input impedance of an angled two-plate transmission line is calculated by solving the telegrapher's equations numerically. The numerical results suffer from larger deviation from its rigorous solution as the plate angle increases.

  • In many countries including Korea, in order to transmit the more electric power, the higher transmission line voltage is inevitable. So, a rapid reclosing scheme is important for EHV/UHV transmission lines to ensure requirements for high reliability of main lines. A critical aspect of reclosing operation is the extinction of the secondary arc since it must extinguish before successful reclosure can occur. Therefore the accurate simulation techniques of arcing faults are of importance. And successful reclosing switching can be accomplished by adopting a proper method such as HSGS and hybrid scheme to reduce the secondary arc extinction time. First of all, this paper discusses a suggested arc model, which have time dependent resistance for primary arc and piecewise linear approximated arc model for secondary arc. And this simulation technique is applied to Korean 765 kV transmission lines. Also hybrid scheme is simulated and evaluated for the purpose of shortening dead time. For adaptive reclosing scheme, variable dead time control algorithm is suggested. Two kinds of algorithm are tested. One is max tracking algorithm and the other is rms tracking algorithm. According to simulation results, rms tracking has less errors than max tracking. Therefore rms tracking is applied to Korean 765 kV transmission lines with hybrid scheme.

  • Since most of the Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines are untransposed and multi-circuits, errors are occurred inevitably because of the unbalanced impedances of the lines and so on. Therefore, a distance relaying algorithm applicable to the untransposed multi-circuits transmission lines needs to be developed. The proposed algorithm of fault location estimation in the paper uses the fundamental phasor to reduce the effects of the harmonics. This algorithm also analyzes the second-order difference of the phasor to calculate the traveling times of waves generated by faults. The traveling time of the waves generated by faults is derived from the second-order difference of the phasor. Finally, the distance from the relaying point to the faults is estimated using the traveling times. To analyze the performance of the algorithm, a power system with the EHV untransposed double-circuit transmission lines are modeled and simulated under various fault conditions such as several fault types, fault locations, fault inception angles and fault resistances. The results of the simulations show that the proposed algorithm has the capability to estimate the fault locations quickly and accurately.

  • Snow accretion on transmission lines may cause critical accidents such as sleet jump, tower collpases, etc,. In order to assist power system operators to prevent thses accidents, aprototype expert system had been developed. The system has basic functions of forecasting snow accretion on transmission lines and making a list of all feasible and effective deicing countermeasures. The knowledge of the effect of weather conditions on the snow accretion process continue main rule base. Simulation results show that the proposed system is very promising.

  • The relation between electric current and magnetic field under three overhead transmission lines being operated was studied. It was examined for a difference each other in comparison with calculated value and measured value for current, magnetic field. With magnetic field equations made out, The magnetic field distribution around transmission lines had made to figure out with easy by load electric current value. Additionally, we are going to describe the distribution curve of magnetic exposure volume for KEPCO's T/L.

  • In recent the maximum voltage of overhead power transmission lines in Korea was upgraded to 765kV. In general a overhead ground wire is installed for protecting overhead power transmission lines from lightning. For the 765kV line, Composite Overhead Ground Wire with Optic Fiber (OPGW) is applied as a overhead ground wire and have a function of the communication line between substations. In this paper, the construction and properties of OPGW, and its installation methods are discribed.

  • The presence of older installations, in particular nuclear facilities, demands extra studies concerning the safety evaluation of those installations. One of the aspects to deal with is the safety of the several transmission lines in a nuclear installation, for instance the safety of control, safety against fire, etc.. . This paper investigates the use of fuzzy set theory in the inspection of transmission lines of nuclear installations at SCK/CEN, Belgium.

  • Traditionally electric power system are operated in such a way that the total fuel cost is minimized regardless of accounting for tie-lines transmission constraint and emissions produced. But tie-lines transmission and emissions constraint are very important issues in the operation and planning of electric power system. This paper presents the Two-Phase Neural Network(TPNN) to solve the Economic Load Dispatch (ELD) problem with tie-lines transmission and emissions constraint considering transmission losses. The transmission losses are obtained from the B-coefficient which approximate the system losses as s quadratic function of the real power generation. By applying the proposed algorithm to the test system, the usefulness of this algorithm is verified.

  • This paper describes a new method for extracting characteristic impedance of transmission line using Substrate Integrated Artificial Dielectric (SIAD). The new procedure to calculate the characteristic impedance of SIAD transmission line is described with the proper equations and basic transmission line theory. The characteristic impedance is determined as an almost fixed value in the proposed method, while it fluctuates according to frequency in the previous method. As the result, the effective dielectric constant of SIAD transmission line is calculated as a fixed value rather than fluctuating one. In order to show the validity of the proposed method, SIAD microstrip lines are simulated and measured, and characteristic impedances and effective dielectric constant are calculated and compared to the previous method.

  • The electric power demand is steadily high. It becomes difficult to secure the land for overhead transmission lines year after year. Downsizing of overhead transmission lines can be most effectively achieved by applying polymer insulation arm. This paper describes the outline of compact overhead transmission lines and the result of mechanical evaluation of FRP for the compact transmission towers. Bending strength of FRP was evaluated according to the fiber orientation because the fiber orientation in FRP has a great effect on the strength of FRP.
