Mathematics Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Inventory (MTEBI) was translated into Korean and conducted among Korean pre-service mathematics teachers. The Korean-translated MTEBI consists of two subscales with 16 items. Personal Mathematics Teaching Efficacy (PMTE) subscale has 10 items and Mathematics Teaching Outcome Expectancy (MTOE) subscale has 6 items. The purpose of this study is to investigate the internal reliability and the construct validity of the Korean-translated MTEBI. The Cronbach alpha coefficient of Korean-translated MTEBI and its two subscales are respectively .87, .83, and .74 which imply that the instrument is reliable. The construct validity was achieved by performing factor analysis. Principal component solution with varimax rotation for the Korean-translated MTEBI was used in factor analysis and thus the best fit simple structure was obtained by two factors which correspond to the self-efficacy dimension and the outcome expectancy dimension of Bandura's self-efficacy theory.
Objectives : Translations of Korean Medical Classical texts were analyzed quantitatively to verify their trend. Based on findings, accumulated problems and their solutions were discussed. Methods : A list of translated Classical texts in the field of Korean Medicine from the National Central Library collection was organized. Afterwards, the publication date, field, author information and content of the translated version were analyzed. Results : Of Chinese Medical texts, those from the Ming and Qing periods were most translated, while major texts pre-dating the Song period were left out. In addition, while texts in the fields of Shanghan-Jingui, comprehensive medical texts, scriptures, medical theories that were high in demand in educational and clinical sectors were actively translated, those in secondary fields were insufficiently translated. Of medical texts of Korea, those from the Joseon period were mostly translated, including major texts such as the Donguibogam and various kinds of texts reflecting research demands. Conclusions : In the future, texts that have not been translated need to be prioritized while basic elements need to be identified for better quality translation. To enable quantitative and qualitative expansion of Korean Medical Classical Texts translation, institutional and academic support is crucial.
This article examines distinctive linguistic shifts of translational English in an effort to verify the validity of the translation universals hypotheses, including simplification, explicitation, normalization and leveling-out, which have been most heavily explored to date. A large-scale study involving comparable corpora of translated and non-translated English newspaper texts has been carried out to typify particular linguistic attributes inherent in translated texts. The main findings are as follows. First, by employing the parameters of STTR, top-to-bottom frequency words, and mean values of sentence lengths, the translational instances of simplification have been detected across the translated English newspaper corpora. In contrast, the portion of function words produced contrary results, which in turn suggests that this feature might not constitute an effective test of the hypothesis. Second, it was found that the use of connectives was more salient in original English newspaper texts than translated English texts, being incompatible with the explicitation hypothesis. Third, as an indicator of translational normalization, lexical bundles were found to be more pervasive in translated texts than in non-translated texts, which is expected from and therefore support the normalization hypothesis. Finally, the standard deviations of both STTR and mean sentence lengths turned out to be higher in translated texts, indicating that the translated English newspaper texts were less leveled out within the same corpus group, which is opposed to what the leveling-out hypothesis postulates. Overall, the results suggest that not all four hypotheses may qualify for the label translation universals, or at least that some translational predictors are not feasible enough to evaluate the effectiveness of the translation universals hypotheses.
The purpose of this study were to translate the Fullerton Advanced Balance (FAB) scale into Korean and to verify the content validity by utilizing a back-translation method with a view to assessing balance function and the risk of falling in a clinical research setting. This research was conducted in six steps. First, three Korean physical therapists translated the FAB scale into Korean. Second, two bilingual professors of physical therapy and a physical therapist evaluated translation conformity of Korean-translated FAB scale. In the third and fourth steps, twelve physical therapists evaluated the degree of translation comprehension, and a translator back-translated the Korean FAB scale into the original language. Fifth, a bilingual professor of physical therapy and two native speakers evaluated the technical and conceptual equivalence between the original and translation versions. In this process, inappropriate translated items were revised using recommended substitute words or sentences, and all items were evaluated on the basis of three points or more on a rating scale in terms of translation comprehension, and the technical and conceptual equivalence of the back-translation. In the sixth and last step, the translation verification committee completed the final Korean version. The above process indicated that the content validity of the Korean-translated FAB scale was established by means of systematic translation methods, and it can therefore be used to assess balance function and the risk of falls in a clinical research setting.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to translate and validate the Korean version of Hall's Professional Inventory(HPI) scale to assess levels of professionalism among Korean registered nurses. Method: The 25 item HPI scale was translated and content review was done by translation panel. After the content review, a bilingual nursing scholar performed the back-translation into English. A semantic equivalence test was conducted with 5 American nursing professors. A pilot study was conducted with a sample of 164 registered nurses in Korea to test the validity and reliability of the translated HPI. Result: The content equivalence for translated version of HPI was validated by a translation panel. The finding of the semantic equivalence test of back-translated version was 72.8%. The Cronbach's alpha for the Korean version of HPI was .820. Conclusions: This study provides information about the issues of translating an instrument such as the HPI. The Korean version of the HPI is a valid and reliable instrument and can have psychometric properties equivalent to those of the original HPI. The translated version could be used for assessing levels of professionalism for other health care professionalism as well as nurses.
This study sought to explore the types of predictable pattern books are suitable for reading aloud, the differences between English and translated Korean picture books in terms of their characteristics of speakability and the meaning of sentences. This study investigated a total of 112 picture books. The predictable pattern types were analyzed specifically, compared with onomatopoeia, mimetic words, repetition, rhyme, the shift of sentence and style types. The results indicated that predictable pattern books could be classified into eight types and the number of sentences in translated books increased owing to the difference of sentence structure. In terms of speakability, words in repetition, onomatopoeia and mimetic words represented higher frequency except rhyme because of the difference of characteristics of the two languages. Furthermore, translations used strategies of the shift in sentence and style types for speakability. These findings demonstrate that predictable pattern books can serve as good materials to read aloud for young children not only in terms of English picture books but also translated books regardless of concerns regarding their speakability.
This study analyzed how an aspect of translation can be shown on the 'Kureru type(くれる類)' verbs in "Kokoro", which was a Japanese modern novel when it was reproduced by translators. It focused on 'the use in accordance with a subject of expression and the other person' and 'the object of movement'. 'The use in accordance with a subject of expression and the other person' could be summarized as follows: The 'Kureru type' verbs were not translated only in accordance with the use of vocabulary in a dictionary. 'Kudasaru' was used in many examples of letter writing when 'the giver' was younger and it was translated to a polite form in Korean. 'Kureru' had a characteristic when 'the giver' was older in Korean translation. The act of parents was translated to an honorific form if parents were 'givers' regardless of whether a listener was an internal character or an external character in parent-child relationships. The degree of politeness was different in English translation when the 'Kureru type' verbs were used for asking a favor request command. 'Please' was used more for 'Kudasaru' than 'Kureru'. An aspect of translation in accordance with 'the object of movement' could be summarized as follows: The 'Kureru type' verbs were used as main verbs. 'Kureru' and 'Kudasaru' were translated to 'Juda' 'Jusida' in Korean translation, but they were translated to various vocabulary words in accordance with the characteristic of 'the object of movement' and were translated to imply a specific act, the process of possession and the result of possession in English translation. The 'Kureru type' verbs were also used as auxiliary verbs. The translated vocabulary words for Korean translation and English translation were different in accordance with whether the movement of things other than the movement of act was included or not. Examples were translated predominantly to expressions of profit such as '-Jada' '-Dalla' '-Jusida' when there was a movement of act as well as specific things in Korean translation. Also, some examples were translated to expressions of profit when there was the movement of act with an abstract matter and there was only the act of the object of movement, but many examples were translated to the act of first verbs. Examples were translated predominantly to the act of first verbs when there was the movement which included specific things and abstract matters or there was only the movement of act in English translation. Expressions of asking a favor request such as 'Kureru' and 'Kudasaru' were translated to '-Dalla' '-Juseyo' in Korean translation, but they were translated to expressions which specify an act while focusing on the structure of sentences or the function of language, such as 'must', 'ask', 'wish', 'would', and 'would like to' 'please' in English translation.

Pre-retrieval query formulation is an important step for identifying local text reuse. Local reuse with high obfuscation, paraphrasing, and translation poses a challenge of finding the reused text in a document. In this paper, three pre-retrieval query formulation strategies for heuristic retrieval in case of low obfuscated, high obfuscated, and translated text are studied. The strategies used are (a) Query formulation using proper nouns; (b) Query formulation using unique words (Hapax); and (c) Query formulation using most frequent words. Whereas in case of low and high obfuscation and simulated paraphrasing, keywords with Hapax proved to be slightly more efficient, initial results indicate that the simple strategy of query formulation using proper nouns gives promising results and may prove better in reducing the size of the corpus for post processing, for identifying local text reuse in case of obfuscated and translated text reuse.

Objectives Nijmegen Questionnaire is one tool used internationally to evaluate hyperventilation syndrome. However, there is a necessity of developing Korean version of the Nijmegen Questionnaire, as the questionnaire of the original one are written in English, marking it hard to apply for Korean patients. So as a first step, we conducted a cross-cultural translation of the Nijmegen Questionnaire into Korean and verification of content validity. Methods We translated the Nijmegen Questionnaire into Korean up to guidelines of cross-cultural adaptation. We conducted a survey with 45 subjects to get content validity, using the translated questionnaire. Results About the translated Nijmegen Questionnaire, 28 out of 45 subjects replied that they had no difficulty understanding them, while 17 were pointed out ambiguous items and 7 offered ideas about ambiguous expressions of them. Upon further examination of five Korean Medical doctors, one sentence was additionally modified in the translated version. Conclusions We translated and adapted cross-culturally the original Nijmegen Questionnaire to develop a Korean version in accordance with internationally accepted guidelines. Then we conducted a survey for content validity with the translated questionnaire and gathered opinions from those questioned. After going through some examining and correcting procedures based on the opinions, we finalized the Korean version of Nijmegen Questionnaire. It will also require a follow-up verification process to prove reliability and validity of the final version of the Korean version of Nijmegen Questionnaire.
In this study, we will find out and understand of the literary characteristics and the material status about the translation of Sijo into chinese poetry which is the representative genre in Korean traditional poetry. Most of the work was done from 17th 19th century, and there are about 120 literary men who translated Sijo. 759 works are translated into Chinese poetry and we cannot find 135 works' original poetry. Therefore about 900 works are translated into Chinese poetry. One Sijo can be translated into more than 1 Chinese poetry, so there are more translated works. According to this study, there are 1356 translated works in total. Many works are done in piece by piece, however most of them are in series with many poems from 10 to 100. First, some popular Sijo was translated into series. Second, some serial Sijo or some Sijo of particular writers are translated into Chinese works. In first case, there are 22 writers' 27 works of Sijo along with Shinwi's "Soakbu" and 652 translated works. In the other case, there are 30 writers' 26 works of Sijo including 10 "Kosangugokga", which was translated by Song shiyul. There are 511 translated works. A lot of translations of Sijo into Chinese poetry are in various documents. They are in personal collections of works such as "Beonbanggok" in Namguman's "Yakchunjip". The works are in books of poems such as Hong yangho's "Chunggudangok" and Shinwi's "Jahasoakbu". In collection of Sijo like Shin heum's "Bangongshiyeo" in "Chungguyoungwon", there are some translated works as well. We can understand Sijo which we do not know the lyrics now by studying the materials about the translation of Sijo into Chinese poetry. The materials about the translation of Sijo into Chinese poetry have necessary value for studying the creation and tradition process of Sijo. In addition, with the materials, we can study the interaction between Korean literature and Chinese one, and also we can study about the changing aspects of Chinese poetry in Late Chosun.
