A nondestructive quality inspection technique using acoustic impulse response method was studied to investigate the feasibility of egg shell inspection. An experimental system was built to generate impact force, to measure the response signal and to analyze the frequency spectrum. This system includes an impulse generating unit, an egg holding seat, a microphone with preamplifier, and a digital oscilloscope connected to Personal Computer by RS-232C interface. The factors such as impulse generating method, egg holding method, and sensor location were evaluated by analyzing the power spectrum density of the measured signal. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. From the sampled eggs, the proper conditions for detecting damaged eggs were found as followings; ceramic for the impact ball material, rubber for egg seat material, 20 degrees for an impact angle of pendulum, 10mm for the distance between egg and sensor, the sharp side for impacting part, and 180 degrees for the location of sensor. 2. Examination of the Fourier transformed analysis in beth normal and damaged eggs revealed that those factors such as the resonant frequency, a number of peak frequencies and the magnitude of power spectrum were important to detect damaged eggs.

Box-Cox model and T-factor method have been widely used to measure economic depreciations for industrial property. The Box-Cox model which combines economic efficiency with depreciation pattern is here extended to the reliability function. To do so a Rayleigh distribution which has been used to estimate the reliability of current assets was chosen as an efficiency curve of marginal productivity. Such an approach provides the possibility to classify the efficiency curves into four categories. It is also possible to analyze the types of depreciation curves. Therefore, the power family of a non-linear Box-Cox model could be set at certain constant values, then the model can be transformed into a linear model to estimate the economic depreciation rates by utilizing the reliability function. Estimating the resultant linear regression equation requires minimal number of observations, while at the same time facilitating the test of hypothesis on depreciation rates.
A gene's influence on an organism's Darwinian fitness ultimately determines whether it will be lost, maintained or modified by natural selection, yet biologists have few gene expression systems in which to measure whole-organism gene function. In the Department of Molecular Ecology at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology we are training "molecularly enabled field biologists" to use transformed plants silenced in the expression of environmentally regulated genes and the plant's native habitats as "laboratories." Research done in these natural laboratories will, we hope, increase our understanding of the function of genes at the level of the organism. Examples of the role of threonine deaminase and RNA-directed RNA polymerases illustrate the process.
In this paper, we propose an iris recognition system using Homogeneous Texture descriptor of MPEG-7 standard. The texture of iris is generally used in iris recognition system. We segment the pupil with Hough transform and the boundary of iris with it's gray level difference between the white of the eye. To extract Homogeneous Texture descriptor, this iris image is transformed into polar coordinates. The extracted descriptor is then compared with the reference in DB. If their distance is larger than threshold, they are recognized as different iris. Test results will show that Homogeneous Texture descriptor can be a good measure for iris recognition system.

The CTE (conditional tail expectation) is a useful risk management measure for a diversified investment portfolio that can be generally estimated by using a transformed univariate distribution. Hong et al. (2016) proposed a multivariate CTE based on multivariate quantile vectors, and explored its characteristics for multivariate normal distributions. Since most real financial data is not distributed symmetrically, it is problematic to apply the CTE to normal distributions. In order to obtain a multivariate CTE for various kinds of joint distributions, distribution fitting methods using copula functions are proposed in this work. Among the many copula functions, the Clayton, Frank, and Gumbel functions are considered, and the multivariate CTEs are obtained by using their generator functions and parameters. These CTEs are compared with CTEs obtained using other distribution functions. The characteristics of the multivariate CTEs are discussed, as are the properties of the distribution functions and their corresponding accuracy. Finally, conclusions are derived and presented with illustrative examples.

This paper presents a methodology to enable the tolerances on mating parts of an assembly to be specified and be compatible to the precision of an assembly robot so as to achieve maximum system performance. The measure of performance is defined as the Probability of Successful Assembly (PSA). A typical loose fastener assembly, usually called peg-in-a-hole is investigated. The Geometric Tolerancing System is adopted to represent position tolerances of mating parts. Two models are presented by considering modifiers on a position tolerance, Regardless of Feature Size (RFS) and Maximum Material Condition (MMC). Using these models, it is analyzed how the Standard Limits and Fits recommended by ANSI influence the performance of an assembly robot. For this analysis, the Standard Limits and Fits are transformed to the representation scheme of the Geometric Tolerancing System. Due to low PSAs when the Standard Limits and Fits are taken into account, the effect of chamfers around a hole is also analyzed.
This paper presents dynamic performance prediction using Matlab / simulink after parameter estimation of synchronous reluctance motor considering iron loss. Test motor is 3 phase SynRM with the segmental rotor, rating power is 0.175KW. Experiment equipment is consists of testing motor, dynamometer, vector invertor dynamocontroller, and power analyser. The stator iron loss and rotor iron loss are modelled by additional windings on three-phase winding axis. These windings are transformed into d-q axis, and are represented as equivalent eddy current windings. P-Q circle diagram method and single phase standstill method are used to measure motor parameters considering iron loss.
A unique technique to extract the phase in time domain is proposed in order to measure the time parameters such as speed and depth by transmitting sound and electric waves. In the signal analysis processing, the phase of pulse signal can be transformed and digitalized with local data in real time without the effect of direct current bias and Nyquist limits. This method is sensitive to base frequency of pulse signal with high spacial resolution and is effective to compare two signals which have different forms. It is expected that the phase analysis technique will be applied to the measurement of the speed and depth accurately by ultrasonic pulse signal in water.
In this paper, we propose a statistic to measure investor sentiment. It is a usual phenomenon that an asymmetric volatility (referred to as the leverage effect) is observed in financial time series and is more sensitive to bad news rather than good news. In a bubble state, investors tend to continuously speculate on financial instruments because of optimism about the future; subsequently, prices tend to abnormally increase for a long time. Estimators of the transformation parameter and the skewness based on Yeo-Johnson transformed GARCH models are employed to check whether a bubble or abnormality exist. We verify the appropriacy of the proposed interpretation through analyses of KOSPI and NIKKEI.

A measure of skewness and kurtosis is proposed to test multivariate normality. It is based on an empirical standardization using the scaled residuals of the observations. First, we consider the statistics that take the skewness or the kurtosis for each coordinate of the scaled residuals. The null distributions of the statistics converge very slowly to the asymptotic distributions; therefore, we apply a transformation of the skewness or the kurtosis to univariate normality for each coordinate. Size and power are investigated through simulation; consequently, the null distributions of the statistics from the transformed ones are quite well approximated to asymptotic distributions. A simulation study also shows that the combined statistics of skewness and kurtosis have moderate sensitivity of all alternatives under study, and they might be candidates for an omnibus test.
