Wireless LAN is getting more popularity and plays a main role in electronic and telecommunication field. Wireless LAN is more convenient than wired LAN when mobility is required, and are sometimes the only feasible choice. Wireless LAN can also pose a significant security risk when not properly installed and maintained. Thus, this paper studies real-time message transmission using existing mobile telecommunication network and describes considerations and procedures when introducing wireless LAN concept and wireless LAN systems. It also studies integrated wired and wireless networking including wireless LAN bridge and AP technology of International Organization for Standardization, and especially real-time dynamic image data transmission in a moving train.
Railroad bridges form an integral part of railway infrastructure throughout the world. To accommodate increased axel loads, train speeds, and greater volumes of freight traffic, in the presence of changing structural conditions, the load carrying capacity and serviceability of existing bridges must be assessed. One way is through system identification of in-service railroad bridges. To dates, numerous researchers have reported system identification studies with a large portion of their applications being highway bridges. Moreover, most of those models are calibrated at global level, while only a few studies applications have used globally and locally calibrated model. To reach the global and local calibration, both ambient vibration tests and controlled tests need to be performed. Thus, an approach for system identification of a railroad bridge that can be used to assess the bridge in global and local sense is needed. This study presents system identification of a railroad bridge using free vibration data. Wireless smart sensors are employed and provided a portable way to collect data that is then used to determine bridge frequencies and mode shapes. Subsequently, a calibrated finite element model of the bridge provides global and local information of the bridge. The ability of the model to simulate local responses is validated by comparing predicted and measured strain in one of the diagonal members of the truss. This research demonstrates the potential of using measured field data to perform model calibration in a simple and practical manner that will lead to better understanding the state of railroad bridges.

The dynamic load effects, generated by moving trains, are transferred to the railway bridges through tracks. The dynamic load effects may vary due to the dynamic characteristics of the applied vehicle loads and the railway bridges including the track system. However, the track models have been neglected or simplified by spring elements in the most studies since it is quite complicated to consider the track systems in the dynamic analysis models of railway bridges. In this study track system on railway bridges are modeled using a three-dimensional discrete-support model that can simulate the load carrying behavior of tracks. A 40m simply supported prestressed concrete box-girder system adopted for high-speed railway bridges are modeled for simulation works. The train models are composed of 20 cars for KTX. The dynamic response of railway bridges are found to be affected depending on whether the track model is considered for not. The influencing rate depends on the traveling speed and different wheel-axle distance. The dynamic bridge response decreases remarkably by the track systems around the resonant frequency. Therefore, the resonance effect can be reduced by modifying the track properties in the railway bridge, especially for KTX trains.
Maglev is a system that a train runs levitated above a rail. Therefore it is very important to maintain a constant levitation gap for achieving serviceability and ride comfort. This study is a cooperation research subject of the 3-1 subject, performance improvement of maglev track structures, of the Center for Urban Maglev Program in Korea, started in 2006. The aim of this study is development of rapid constructions of bridge superstructure for maglev. At present, precast deck is widely used because of its superiority to cast-in-place concrete on quality and the term of works. The research group suggested basic systems of maglev guideway with PSC-U type and trapezoidal open steel box type girder, and precast deck, cooperating with Korea Railroad Research Institute, the managing institute of the 3-1 subject. In this study, longitudinally full-scale guideway girder system was fabricated and static/dynamic test of the girder was performed for the purpose of the performance evaluation.

Recently, it becomes a very important issue to consider the mechanical systems such as high-speed vehicle and railway train moving on a flexible beam structure. Using general approach proposed in the first part of this paper, it tis possible to predict planar motion of constrained mechanical system and elastic structure with various kinds of foundation supporting condition. Combined differential-algebraic equations of motion derived from both multibody dynamics theory and Finite Element Method can be analyzed numerically using generalized coordinate partitioning algorithm. To verify the validity of this approach, results from simply supported elastic beam subjected to a moving load are compared with exact solution from a reference. Finally, parameter study is conducted for a moving vehicle model on a simply supported 3-span bridge.

Dynamic vibration absorbers are widely used in machinery, buildings, and structures, including bridges. Two cases of their usage are considered in this paper. One is a simply supported beam subjected to either a moving force or a sequence of moving forces, which simulates a train-bridge interaction problem. The other is a case where a primary system is mounted on a base that is not grounded and is excited by an external force. The conditions that the dynamic vibration absorbers must meet in these cases are found and compared to those for usual cases where bases of primary systems are grounded.

To evaluate the vertical loads on railway bridges, conventional load tests are typically conducted. However, these tests often entail significant costs and procedural challenges. Railway conditions involve nearly identical load profiles due to standardized rail systems, which may appear straightforward in terms of load conditions. Nevertheless, this study aims to validate load tests conducted under operational train conditions by comparing the results with those obtained from conventional load tests. Additionally, static and dynamic structural behaviors are extracted from the measurement data for evaluation. To ensure the reliability of load testing, this research demonstrates feasibility through comparisons of existing measurement data with sensor attachment locations, train speeds, responses between different rail lines, tendency analysis, selection of impact coefficients, and analysis of natural frequencies. This study applies to the Dongho Railway Bridge and verifies the applicability of the proposed method. Ten operational trains and 44 sensors were deployed on the bridge to measure deformations and deflections during load test intervals, which were then compared with theoretical values. The analysis results indicate good symmetry and overlap of loads, as well as a favorable comparison between static and dynamic load test results. The maximum measured impact coefficient (0.092) was found to be lower than the theoretical impact coefficient (0.327), and the impact influence from live loads was deemed acceptable. The measured natural frequencies approximated the theoretical values, with an average of 2.393Hz compared to the calculated value of 2.415Hz. Based on these results, this paper demonstrates that for evaluating vertical loads, it is possible to measure deformations and deflections of truss railway bridges through load tests under operational train conditions without traffic control, enabling the calculation of response factors for stress adjustments.
Recently rapid-transit railway systems have been constructed in many developing countries due to its advantages in congestions and environmental problems. Railway bridges show many different aspects compared to road bridges and passenger comfort and traffic safety are one of them. In particular, deflection and acceleration due to repeated vibration characteristics have a structural weakness that can cause undesirable response. Especially steel railway bridges have been known to have weaknesses due to its relatively light weights compared to concrete bridges. The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamic response of steel box girder bridges due to passing trains then propose the appropriate method to mitigate the level of vibration in terms of accelerations. Three steel railway bridges are tested and the numerical model to analyze the dynamic response of the bridge by passing train are developed. For the verification of the model, the natural frequency extracted using the acceleration data measured in the bridge is compared with the natural frequency of the numerical model. To mitigate the acceleration level of the bridge, parametric studies are performed to find the effectiveness of the method. Based on the analysis, the appropriate method is proposed for decreasing the acceleration of the bridge for passenger comfort and traffic safety.
In this study, track dynamic interaction characteristics caused by the vehicle running through transitional section such as bridge abutments were studied using the finite element analysis program. The geometric condition of track was generated by trigonometric function and allowable maximum track irregularity is determined by KORAIL track maintenance criteria. The sub-infrastructure under rail fastener system was modelled by 3D solid elements. To reduce computational cost only half track line is numerically considered and the roller boundary condition was applied to each side of model. In this study, the vehicle-track dynamic interaction analysis was carried out for standard Korean transition section of concrete track and the dynamic behaviors were investigated. The dynamic characteristics considered are wheel load variation, vertical acceleration at body, and maximum Mises stress at each part of transitional section.

Railroad bridges account for 25% of the entire high-speed rail network. Railway bridges are subject to gradual structural degradation or fatigue accumulation due to consistent and repeating excitation by fast moving trains. Wireless sensing technology has opened up a new avenue for bridge health monitoring owing to its low-cost, high fidelity, and multiple sensing capability. On the other hand, measuring the transient response during train passage is quite challenging that the current wireless sensor system cannot be applied due to the intrinsic time delay of the sensor network. Therefore, this paper presents a framework for monitoring such transient responses with wireless sensing systems using 1) real-time excessive vibration monitoring through ultra-low-power MEMS accelerometers, and 2) post-event time synchronization scheme. The ultra-low power accelerometer continuously monitors the vibration and trigger network when excessive vibrations are detected. The entire network of wireless smart sensors starts sensing through triggering and the post-event time synchronization is conducted to compensate for the time error on the measured responses. The results of this study highlight the potential of detecting the impact load and triggering the entire network, as well as the effectiveness of the post-event time synchronized scheme for compensating for the time error. A numerical and experimental study was carried out to validate the proposed sensing hardware and time synchronization method.
