With the development of wearable(ubiquitous) computers, those traditional interfaces between human and computers gradually become uncomfortable to use, which directly leads to a requirement for new one. In this paper, we study on a new interface in which computers try to recognize the gesture of human through a digital camera. Because the method of recognizing hand gesture through camera is affected by the surrounding environment such as lighting and so on, the detector should be a little sensitive. Recently, Viola's detector shows a favorable result in face detection. where Adaboost learning algorithm is used with the Haar features from the integral image. We apply this method to hand area detection and carry out comparative experiments with the classic method using skin color. Experimental results show Viola's detector is more robust than the detection method using skin color in the environment that degradation may occur by surroundings like effect of lighting.
This study focuses on providing the pedagogical implications of stress in English pronunciation teaching since stress is one the most important characteristic factors in English pronunciation (Bolinger, 1976; Brown, 1994; Celce-Murcia, Brinton & Goodwin, 1996; Kreidler, 1989). The author investigated stress production regarding in terms of duration, pitch, and intensity by a group of native speakers of English and a group of low-proficiency South Kyungsang Korean college students for their pre-test. For both of the pre- and post-test, the same stimuli, which consisted of a one-syllable word, two two-syllable words, three three-syllable words, and three four-syllable words, were used along with the various sentence positions: isolation, initial, medial, and final. Soft ware programs, ALVIN and Praat, were used to record and analyze the data. Since Celce-Murcia et al. (1996), Klatt (1975), and Ladefoged (2001) treat duration of the stressed syllable more significantly than other factors, pitch and intensity, with respect to the listener's point of view, the author developed a special method of teaching English stress using a traditional Korean drum to emphasize duration. In addition, the results from the native speakers' production showed that their main strategy to realize stress was through lengthening stressed syllables. After six weeks of stress instruction using the drum, the production of the native speakers and the SK Korean participants from the pre- and post-test were compared. The results from the post-test indicated that the participants showed great improvement not only in duration but also in pitch after the stress instruction. Pitch improvement was unexpected but well-explained by the statement that long vowels receive accent in loan word adaptation in North Kyungsang Korean. The results also showed that the Korean participants' pitch values became more even in their duration values for each syllable as the structure of the word or the sentence became more complex, due to their dependency upon their L1.
Chios Gum Mastic (CGM) is a natural resin extracted from the leaves of Pistacia lentiscus, a plant endemic to the Greek island of Chios. It has been used by traditional healers, and it has antibacterial, antifungal properties, and therapeutic benefits for the skin. The CGM reduces the formation of dental plaque and bacterial growth in oral saliva, and recent studies have demonstrated the role of antioxidant activity of CGM. Although CGM has been widely investigated, its protective effect against oxidative-damage to keratinocytes, as well as the relationship between CGM and autophagy, has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to assess the protective effect of CGM against $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress and to evaluate the autophagic features induced by CGM in human keratinocytes. The pretreatment with CGM significantly reduced apoptosis in $H_2O_2$-exposed HaCaT cells. It promoted the degradation of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9; and it induced the formation of the processed PARP. The treatment with CGM caused an increase in vesicle formation compared to control group. The level of p62 was reduced and the conversion of LC3-I to LC3-II was increased in CGM treated HaCaT cells. Also, the treatment with CGM increased cleavage of ATG5-ATG12 complex. In summary, CGM helps the cells to survive under stressful conditions by preventing apoptosis and enhancing autophagy. Besides, the present investigation provides evidence to support the antioxidant potential of CGM in vitro and opens up a new horizon for future experiments.

In this paper we will discuss two different layout concepts which can be applied to rail-vehicle assembly factory. The existing system is based on the traditional flow line, and the suggested system is based on the fixed position layout. The main factors which affect on the system performances are the variation of process time, shortage rate of part and the shortage period. Simulation experiments indicate that the fixed position layout is better with respect to the throughput, mean flow time per vehicle and the mean flow time per fleet. Furthermore, the fixed position layout is more robust than the flow line because performance measures are insensitive to the variations of factors.
Background: Korean ginseng, Panax ginseng Meyer, has been used as a traditional oriental medicine to treat illness and promote health for several thousand years. Ginsenosides are the main constituents for the pharmacological effects of P. ginseng. Since several ginsenosides, including ginsenoside (G)-Rg3 and G-Rp1, have reported antiplatelet activity, here we investigate the ability of G-Rp4 to modulate adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-induced platelet aggregation. The ginsenoside Rp4, a similar chemical structure of G-Rp1, was prepared from G-Rg1 by chemical modification. Methods: To examine the effects of G-Rp4 on platelet activation, we performed several experiments, including antiplatelet ability, the modulation of intracellular calcium concentration, and P-selectin expression. In addition, we examined the activation of integrin ${\alpha}IIb{\beta}_3$ and the phosphorylation of signaling molecules using fibrinogen binding assay and immunoblotting in rat washed platelets. Results: G-Rp4 inhibited ADP-induced platelet aggregation in a dose-dependent manner. We found that G-Rp4 decreased calcium mobilization and P-selectin expression in ADP-activated platelets. Moreover, fibrinogen binding to integrin ${\alpha}IIb{\beta}_3$ by ADP was attenuated in G-Rp4-treated platelets. G-Rp4 significantly attenuated phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1 and 2, p38, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase, as well as protein kinase B, phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase, and phospholipase C-${\gamma}$ phosphorylations. Conclusion: G-Rp4 significantly inhibited ADP-induced platelet aggregation and this is mediated via modulating the intracellular signaling molecules. These results indicate that G-Rp4 could be a potential candidate as a therapeutic agent against platelet-related cardiovascular diseases.

Using Network Coding in P2P systems yields great benefits, e.g., reduced download delay. The core notion of Network Coding is to allow encoding and decoding at intermediate nodes, which are prohibited in the traditional networking. However, improper implementation of Network Coding may reduce the overall performance of P2P systems. Network Coding cannot work with general arithmetic operations, since its arithmetic is over a Finite Field and the use of an efficient Finite Field arithmetic algorithm is the key to the performance of Network Coding. Also there are other important performance parameters in Network Coding such as Field size. In this paper we study how those factors influence the performance of Network Coding based systems. A set of experiments shows that overall performance of Network Coding can vary 2-5 times by those factors and we argue that when developing a network system using Network Coding those performance parameters must be carefully chosen.

In this paper, we propose a new in-hand 3D modeling system that improves user convenience. Since traditional modeling systems are inconvenient to use, an in-hand modeling system has been studied, where an object is handled by hand. However, there is also a problem that it requires additional equipment or specific constraints to remove hands for good modeling. In this paper, we propose a contact state change detection algorithm for automatic hand removal and improved ICP algorithm that enables outlier handling and additionally uses color for accurate registration. The proposed algorithm enables accurate modeling without additional equipment or any constraints. Through experiments using real data, we show that it is possible to accomplish accurate modeling under the general conditions without any constraint by using the proposed system.

In this paper, we designed the models for pattern classification which can reflect the latest trend in time series. It has been shown that fusion models based on statistical and AI methods are superior to traditional ones for the pattern classification model supporting decision making. Especially, the hit rates of pattern classification models combined with fuzzy theory are relatively increased. The statistical SVM models combined with fuzzy membership function, or the models combining neural network and FCM has shown good performance. BPN, PNN, FNN, FCM, SVM, FSVM, Decision Tree, Time Series Analysis, and Regression Analysis were used for pattern classification models in the experiments of this paper. The economical indices DB with time series properties of the financial market(Korea, KOSPI200 DB) and the electrocardiogram DB of arrhythmia patients in hospital emergencies(USA, MIT-BIH DB) were used for data base.

This paper implemented the real-time object tracking algorithm that extracts and tracks the moving object adaptively to input frame sequence by using non-parametric image processing method and Kalman filter-based dynamic AR(2) process method. By applying non-parametric image processing to input frames, the moving object was extracted from the background adaptively to diverse environmental conditions. And the movement of object was able to be adaptively estimated and tracked by modeling the various movement of object as dynamic AR(2) process and estimating based on the Kalman filter the parameters of AR(2) process dynamically changing along time. The experiments of the implemented object tracking system showed that the proposed method tracked the moving object as more approximately as the estimation error became about l/2.5∼1/50 of one of the traditional tracking method based on linear Kalman filter.

In WSN (Wireless Sensor Networks) based surveillance system, it needs to know the occurrence of events or objects and their locations, because the data have no meaning without location information. Using traditional 2D localization mechanisms provide good accuracy where altitude is fixed. But the mapping the position estimated by 2D localization to the real world can cause an error. Even though 3D localization mechanisms provide better accuracy than 2D localization, they need four reference nodes at least and high processing overhead. In our surveillance system, it is needed to estimate the height of the detected object in order to determine if the object is human. In this paper, we propose a height estimation mechanism which does not require many reference nodes and high complexity. Finally, we verify the performance of our proposed mechanism through various experiments.
