Fusion and characterization of bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether based thermosetting polymer mortars containing an epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand are presented here for the Experimental study. The specimens have been prepared by means of an innovative process, in mild conditions, of commercial epoxy resin, Fly ash and Rock sand based paste. In this way, thermosetting based hybrid mortars characterized by a different content of normalized Fly ash and Rock sand by a homogeneous dispersion of the resin have been obtained. Once hardened, these new composite materials show improved compressive strength and toughness in respect to both the Fly ash and the Rock sand pastes since the Resin provides a more cohesive microstructure, with a reduced amount of micro cracks. The micro structural characterization allows pointing out the presence of an Interfacial Transition Zone similar to that observed in cement based mortars. A correlation between micro-structural features and mechanical properties of the mortar has also been studied.
The processing and characterization of ceramic nanocomposites, which produce bulk nanostructures with attractive mechanical properties, have been emphasized and introduced at Prof. Mukherjee's Lab at UC Davis. The following subjects will be introduced in detail in Part II, III, and IV. In Part II, the paper will describe a three-phase alumina-based nanoceramic composite demonstrating superplasticity at a surprisingly lower temperature and higher strain rate. The next part will show that an alumina-carbon nanotube-niobium nanocomposite produced fracture toughness values that are three times higher than that of pure nanocrystalline alumina. It was possible to take advantage of both fiber-toughening and ductile-metal toughening in this investigation. In the fourth section, discussed will be a silicon-nitride/silicon-carbide nanocomposite, produced by pyrolysis of liquid polymer precursors, demonstrating one of the lowest creep rates reported so far in ceramics at the comparable temperature of $1400^{\circ}C$. This was first achieved by avoiding the oxynitride glass phase at the intergrain boundaries. One important factor in the processing of these nanocomposites was the use of the electrical field assisted sintering method. This allowed the sintering to be completed at significantly lower temperatures and during much shorter times. These improvements in mechanical properties will be discussed in the context of the results from the microstructural investigations.

The original fracture criteria developed by Maxey/Kiefner for axial through-wall and surface-cracked pipes have worked well for many industries for a large variety of relatively low strength and toughness materials. However, newer line pipe steels have some unusual characteristics that differ from these older materials. One example is a test data that has demonstrated that X80 line-pipe with an axial through-wall-crack can fail at pressures about 30 percent lower than predicted with commonly used analysis methods for older steels. Thus, it is essential to review the currently available models and investigate the applicability of these models to newer high-strength line pipe materials. In this paper, the available models for predicting the failure behavior of axial-cracked pipes (through-wall-cracked and external surface-cracked pipes) were reviewed. Furthermore, the applicability of these models to high-strength steel pipes was investigated by analyzing limited full-scale pipe fracture initiation test results. Based on the analyzed results, the shortcomings of the available models were identified. For both through-wall and surface cracks, the major shortcomings were related to the characterization of the material toughness, which generally leads to non-conservative predictions in the J-T analyses. The findings in this paper may be limited to the test data that were consider for this study. The requisite characteristics of a potential model were also identified in the present paper.

Loss of fracture resistance due to thermal aging degradation is a potential limiting factor affecting the long-term (80+ year) viability of nuclear reactors. To evaluate the effects of decades of aging in a practical time frame, accelerated aging must be employed prior to mechanical characterization. In this study, a variety of chemically and microstructurally diverse austenitic stainless steels were aged between 0 and 30,000 h at 290-400 ℃ to simulate 0-80+ years of operation. Over 600 static fracture tests were carried out between room temperature and 400 ℃. The results presented include selected J-R curves of each material as well as K0.2mm fracture toughness values mapped against aging condition and ferrite content in order to display any trends related to those variables. Results regarding differences in processing, optimal ferrite content under light aging, and the relationship between test temperature and Mo content were observed. Overall, it was found that both the ferrite volume fraction and molybdenum content had significant effects on thermal degradation susceptibility. It was determined that materials with >25 vol% ferrite are unlikely to be viable for 80 years, particularly if they have high Mo contents (>2 wt%), while materials less than 15 vol% ferrite are viable regardless of Mo content.

Glass ceramic has a high mechanical strength and low sintering temperature. So, it can be used as a thick film substrate or a high strength insulator. A series of glass ceramic samples based on MgO-$Al_2O_3-SiO_2-ZrO_2$ (MASZ) were prepared by melting at $1,600^{\circ}C$, roll-quenching and heat treatment at various temperatures from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1,400^{\circ}C$. Dependent on the heat treatment temperature used, glass ceramics with different crystal phases were obtained. Their nucleation behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated with differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Vicker's hardness testing machine. With increasing the heat treatment temperature of MASZ samples, their hardness and toughness initially increase and then reach the maximum points at $1,300^{\circ}C$, and begin to decrease at above this temperature, which is likely to be due to the softening of glass ceramics. As the content of $ZrO_2$ in MAS glass ceramics increases from 7.0 wt.% to 13 wt.%, Vicker's hardness and fracture toughness increase from $853Kg/mm^2$ to $878Kg/mm^2$ and $1.6MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ to $2.4MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$ respectively, which seems to be related with the nucleation of elongated phases like fiber.

Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) have good mechanical and electrical properties. So, They have been used as high strength refractory materials and thick film substrates, etc. In this study, Composite ceramics of alumina-TZP(3Y) were fabricated by uniaxial pressing and sintering at 1,400, 1,500, and $1,600^{\circ}C$, and their microstructures and mechanical properties were investigated. As the TZP(3Y) content in composite ceramics increases from 20 wt.% to 80 wt.%, the fracture toughness increases monotonically, which seems to be related to the higher relative density and/or toughening mechanism by means of stabilized tetragonal zirconia phase at room temperature. In contrast to the fracture toughness, Vickers hardness of the composite ceramics shows maximum value (1,938 Hv) at a 40 wt.% of TZP(3Y). The result of Vickers hardness is likely to be due to more dense sintered microstructure of composite ceramics than pure alumina and reinforcement of composite ceramics with TZP(3Y), considering that Vickers hardness of pure $Al_2O_3$ is greater than that of TZP(3Y). It is also shown that the $ZrO_2$ particles are $l^{\circ}Cated$ between $Al_2O_3$ grains and suppress grain growth each other.
For the fabrication of titanium diboride($TiB_2$)- based cermet as applications of cutting tools and wear resistant materials, a binder metal with good mechanical properties and sinterability is essential. In this study, SUS316L was chosen for the binder metal to obtain a new $TiB_2$ cermet with superior hardness and toughness.$TiB_2$-SUS316L cermets were densified to relative density of more than 99% by pressureless sintering at temperature above $1650^{\circ}C$ The flexural strength was up to 1290MPa at 10vo1%SUS316L cermet in spite of the formation of $Fe_2$B phase during the sintering. The fracture toughness was obtained up to $6MPam^{1/2}$ with Victors hardness over 18Gpa. These hardness and fracture toughness combinations are better than those of conventional cermet. The high temperature strength remarkably decreased by the plastic deformations of SUS316L binder phase at nearby $800^{\circ}C$ .
This study was performed to establish the characteristics of the heat affected zones from view point of the repair weldability for a damaged CrMoV steam turbine rotor steel. Characterization of the heat affected zones of the weldment was conducted with respect to various of postweld heat treatment temperatures, $566^{\circ}C$, $621^{\circ}C$ and $677^{\circ}C$. The evaluations of the heat affected zones were carried out in terms of microstructural characterization, microhardness measurements, Charpy v-notch impact, tensile and stress-rupture tests. The results indicated that the effect of the postweld heat treatment at $677^{\circ}C$ exhibited the favorable microstructure and mechanical properties for the stability of the heat affected zones. While the heat affected zone of the weldment, produced without postweld heat treatment, displayed the inferior toughness and microstructure indicating localized carbide precipitations on the grain boundary. It was also indicated that the stability of the heat affected zones were deteriorated by the formation of the cavitation on the grain boundaries.

Transparency, excellent toughness, thermal stability and a very good dimensional stability make Polycarbonate (PC) one of the most widely used engineering thermoplastics. Polycarbonate market include electronics, automotive, construction, optical media and packaging. One alternative for reducing the environmental pollution caused by polycarbonate from electronic waste (e-waste), is to use it in cement concretes. In this work, physical and chemical characterization of recycled polycarbonate from electronic waste was made, through the analysis by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Then cement concrete was made with Portland cement, sand, gravel, water, and this recycled polycarbonate. Specimens without polycarbonate were produced for comparison purposes. The effect of the particle sizes and concentrations of recycled polycarbonate within the concrete, on the compressive strength and density was studied. Results show that compressive strength values and equilibrium density of concrete depend on the polycarbonate particle sizes and its concentrations; particularly the highest compressive strength values were 20% higher than that for concrete without polycarbonate particles. Moreover, morphological, structural and crystallinity characteristics of recycled polycarbonate, are suitable for to be mixed into concrete.

High strength and fracture toughness of Al-Li-Cu alloy(2090 Al alloy) have been achieved by the improvement of melting and casting, extrusion and heat treatment techniques. To establish the sucessful process for semi-industrial scale ingot(20Kg) the following areas have been investigated: (1) Improvement of melting and casting techniques for ingot by introducing atmospheric modifications, vacuum and rotary degassing, and deslagging. (2) The effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties (3) Mechanical characterization by tensile test, fracture toughness test and fatigue crack propagation test. High mechanical properties were found to be intimately related with ingot soundness. Tensile strength of final products varied from 534MPa to 566MPa in peak aged condition while elongation/ductility ranged from 9.0% to 11.9%. From the fracture toughness test with using compact tensile specimen, plane strain fracture toughness($K_{Ic}$) appeared to be 39MPa${\surd}$m in peak aged condition and 23MPa${\surd}$ m in underaged condition. When load ratios of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5 were given ${\Delta}K_{th}$ was 6.0MPa${\surd}$ m, 5.3MPa${\surd}$ m and 4.3MPa${\surd}$ m respectively.
