This study was conducted to identify the effects of caffeine on the change of blood chemistry components in the serum of the rat(Sprague-Dawley, female). The experimental groups were divided into 7 groups according to the time lapsed after a single oral administration of 100mg/kg caffeine(that is control, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48 and 72 hrs lapsed group) to the rats. The concentrations of glucose, urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatinine, total protein, albumin, A/G ratio, triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, free fatty acid and phospholipid as well as the activities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) were measured in the serum of each experimental groups. The results obtained from this study were summarized as follows ; 1. The concentrations of serum glucose were significantly higher($\rho$<0.01) between 4 (143.0 mg/dl) and 8 hrs(138.0mg/dl) in comparison to the control(101.1mg/dl) after a single oral administration of caffeine(100mg/kg). Whereas there were no significant differences in the concentrations of urea nitrogen, uric acid, creatinine, total protein, albumin and albumin/globulin(A/G) ratio in comparison to the control. 2. The concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol in serum were significantly higher ($\rho$<0.01) between 4(77.4mg/dl, total cholesterol) and 8 hrs(64.7mg/dl, HDL-cholesterol) in comparis to the control(62.8, 46.7mg/dl) after a single oral administration of caffeine (100 mg/kg). On the other hand, the concentrations of triglyceride in serum were significantly lower($\rho$<0.01) after 8 hrs(38.8mg/dl) in comparison to the control(66.5mg/dl). 3. The activities of AST in serum was significantly higher($\rho$<0.05) from 2 hrs(149 U/L) to 8 hrs(178 U/L) in comparison to the control(112 U/L) after a single oral administration of caffeine (100mg/kg). The activities of ALT in serum were significantly higher($\rho$<0.01) at 4(45.5 U/L), 24(49.3 U/L), 48(46.8 U/L) and 72 hrs(42.3 U/L) in comparison to the control (39.7 U/L) after a single oral administration of caffeine (100mg/kg) On the other hand, there were no significant differences in the activities of ALP in comparison to the control.

Objectives : This study was designed to investigate protective effects of Sayeoksanhap-Pyeongweisan-Gamiban(SPG) on hematological changes in rats damaged by CCl4 Methods : We investigated the effects of SPG on hematological changes in terms of AST/ALT levels, Total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride in serum and lipid peroxidation in rat liver. Results : Administration of SPG decreased AST level in serum effectively. In addition, lipid peroxidation in liver tissue, which was elevated by injection of CCl4, was decreased by administration of SPG. In contrast, ALT level, Total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride in serum were not affected by administration of SPG. Conclusion : These results suggest that oral administration of SPG was useful to protect liver against CCl4 by its antioxidant action in liver tissues.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with various metabolic abnormalities, including central obesity, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and high blood pressure. This suggests that NAFLD may represent the hepatic manifestation of the metabolic syndrome. In this study, we investigated unfavorable effects NAFLD on components of metabolic syndrome in post-menopause women. Eight hundred sixty-nine postmenopausal women were recruited for this study. The diagnosis of fatty liver was based on the results of abdominal ultrasonography. Serum levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and HDL-cholesterol were measured. The prevalence of component of metabolic syndrome such as hypertension, hyperglycemia, hypertriglyceridemia, and low-HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in subjects with NAFLD as compared with those without NAFLD. The moderate to severe grade of NAFLD presented higher levels of serum fasting glucose, fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, and triglycerides than the mild NAFLD and the normal group. In conclusion, metabolic syndrome risk was increased in post-menopause women with NAFLD as compared with those without NAFLD. The severity of NAFLD affected metabolic syndrome risk factors. The optimal strategy for the treatment of NAFLD is likely to include lifestyle modifications and therapy to improve insulin resistance.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Artemisia Princeps Var. Orientalis (AP) on serum lipids and the collagen content of the connective tissues in ovariectomized rats. From day 2 until day 37 after the ovariectomy, Sprague-Dawley female rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: sham-operated rats (Sham), ovariectomized control rats (OVX-control), and ovariectomized rats supplemented with the AP 50 mg/kg bw/day (OVX-AP). The AP ethanol extracts were orally administrated 1 mL per day. The OVX rats were significantly heavier than the sham-operated rats at all time points, but supplementation with the AP extracts tended to gain weight less than OVX-control. Although total-cholesterol was increased at OVX-control, supplementation with the AP extracts tended to result in less than OVX-control. Triglyceride was significantly decreased after supplemented with the AP extracts (p<0.05). HDL-cholesterol is appeared higher AP extracts group than OVX-control. According to the results, we could know the fact that AP extracts were effective on serum lipids content throughout decreasing total-cholesterol, triglyceride and increasing HDL-cholesterol in ovariectomized rats. Supplementation with the AP extracts prevented a decrease in the collagen level in bone and cartilage tissues. These results are consistent with the conclusions based on the estrogenic activities of AP. Therefore, it may be used to possibly improve the quality of life in menopausal women.
This study was done to investigate the antidiabetic effect of Glechoma hederacea LINNAEUS in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by intravenous injection of STZ at a dose of 45 mg/kg dissolved in citrate buffer. The methanol extract of Glechoma hederacea was orally administrated once a day for 6 days. The contents of serum glucose, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol and Atherogenic Index (Al) were significantly decreased, but high density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio (HTR) were significantly increased in Glechoma hederacea treated STZ-sample group compared to the those of STZ-control group. The content of hepatic lipid peroxide and activity of catalase were decreased, but content of glutathione as well as activities of glutathione-S-transferase and superoxide dismutase were increased in Glechoma hederacea treated STZ-sample group compared to the those of STZ-control group. The content of hepatic glycogen and activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glucokinase were significantly increased, but activity of glucose-6-phosphatase was decreased in Glechoma hederacea treated STZ-sample group compared to the those of STZ-control group. These results indicated that methanol extract of Glechoma hederacea would have antidiabetic effect in STZ-induced diabetic rats.
This study was conducted to observe the influences of Crataegus pinnatifida BUNGE extract on lipid concentration in hypercholesterolemic rats (Sprague Dawley, male) fed the experimental diets for 5 weeks. Body weight gain was remarkably lower in the Crataegus pinnatifida BUNGE extract intake group than in the hypercholesterolemic rats. Total cholesterol concentration was remarkably lower in the extract of Crataegus pinnatifida BUNGE supplement in hypercholesterolemic rats than in the hypercholesterolemic model. Whereas, concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, ratio of HDL-cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol were remarkably higher in the extract of Crataegus pinnatifida BUNGE supplement in hypercholesterolemic rats than in the hypercholesterolemic model. Atherosclerotic index (AI), cardiac risk factor (CRF) were remarkably lower in the extract of Crataegus pinnatifida BUNGE supplement in hypercholesterolemic rats than in the hypercholesterolemic model. From the above research, Crataegus pinnatifida BUNGE extract was effective on the lipid concentrations in sera of dietary hypercholesterolemic rats.

The extraction yield of Corni fructus was about 47.5% by extract apparatus. This study was done to investigate the antidiabetic and antioxidative effects of Corni fructus in Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The contents of serum glucose, total cholesterol and hepatic lipid peroxide, glutathione were significantly decreaed (p<0.05) in Corni fructus treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group, also content of triglyceride (TG), atherogenic index (AI) and activity of catalase were decreased, but not statistically significant. High density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol ratio (HTR) were increased in Corni fructus treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group. The activities of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly decreaed (p<0.05) in Corni fructus treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group. The content of hepatic glycogen and activities of glucose-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6 PDH), glucokin-ase were significantly increased, but activity of glucose-Grphosphatase (G-6 Pase)was decreased in Corni fructus treated group compared to the those of STZ-control group. Therefore, these results indicated that ethanol extract of Corni fructus would have antidiabetic and antioxidative effects in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

This experiment was undertaken to investigate and compare the effect of salt on the lipid composition in serm and liver of rats. The average body weight gains and food efficiency ratio were not affected by supplementation with salt in diet. Total cholesterol and free cholesterol levels in serum of all experimental diet group were slightly increased by supplementation with salt, while triglyceride levels were significantly increased. HDL-cholesterol levels of all salt supplementation groups were slightly lower than that of the control group, while LDL, VLDL-cholesterol levels of these groups were higher than that of the control group. The ratio of LDL, VLDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol; so called, atheorgenic index, in serum of salt diet groups was slightly higher than that of the control groups. The ratio of LDL, VLDL-lipoprotein to HDL-lipoprotein in salt diet group were significantly higher than that of the control group. The weight of the liver was not affected by diet, but total cholesterol and triglyceride levels of the liver in salt diet groups were higher than that of the control group.
