The purpose of the study was to prepare the pegylated liposome carrying plasmid DNA with optimal encapsulation efficiency. Plasmid DNA (pCEP4 clone 790, 10.6 kb) was entrapped in the pegylated liposome composed of neutral lipid, POPC (l-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine), cationic lipid, DDAB (dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium bromide) and anionic lipids, DSPE-PEG 2000 (distearoyl phosphatidyl ethanolamine polyethylene glycol 2000) and DSPE-PEG 2000-maleimide by freezing/thawing method. Free plasmid DNA was separated from the encapsulated one by Sepharose CL-4B column chromatography. The DNA amount encapsulated into the pegylated liposome was increased as cationic lipid concentration, initial amount of plasmid DNA and total lipid amount were increased.

A model of simultaneous heat and mass transfer process in absorption of refrigerant vapor into a lithium bromide solution of water-cooled vertical plate absorber was developed. The model can predict temperature and concentration profiles as well as the absorption heat and mass fluxes, the total heat and mass transfer rates and the heat and mass transfer coefficients. Besides, the effect of operating condition on absorption mass flux has been investigated, with the result that the absorption mass flux is increased as the inlet cooling water temperature decreases, the system pressure increases and the inlet solution concentration increases. And among the effects of operating parameters on absorption mass flux, the effect of inlet solution concentration is dominant.

This study used a modified cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) method to efficiently extract DNA from the plant pathogenic fungus Cercospora sojina. Total DNA yield obtained by this method was approximately 1 mg/g of mycelia (fresh weight), and the mean ratio of A260/A280 and A260/A230 were 2.04 and 2.1, respectively. The results of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis, digestion with restriction enzymes, and Southern hybridization indicated that polysaccharides were effectively removed by this method, and the resulting DNA was sufficient for use in subsequent molecular analysis.

This study examines the effects and influences of fumigation on the antimicrobial treatment of excavated dresses in two different museum settings using chemical composite of Methyl Bromide and Ethylene Oxide. The microbial test indicated that the prewashed samples contained Micrococcus, Bacillus, Staphylococcus, and some unidentified fungi and that the total number of microbes decreased after washing. While it was observed that most germs were removed immediately after fumigation, Bacillus was still found and its number even increased. After 5 months, the number of microbes found in Museum A was smaller than Museum B, which shows that Museum A equipped with better environment control facility was superior to Museum. B in terms of exhibition and preservation of dresses against organic damages. In addition, the result indicates that fumigation is an effective measure against the growth and reproduction of microorganisms, considering that the number of microorganisms decreased after fumigation. The color of test sample showed immediate change after fumigation but color difference became stabilized and decreased with the passage of time. The test samples from both museums showed similar patterns.
Mesoporous silica was prepared from hydrothermal synthesis using gel mixture of tetraethylorthosilcate (TEOS) as silica source and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMABr) as a surfactant. In the optimum synthesis cause, molar ratio of template and silica changed. The surface and structure properties of mesoporous silica were determined by XRD, SEM, TEM and BET. Also, surface potential of mesoporous silica was measured using zeta potential. $N_2$ adsorption isotherm characteristics, including the specific surface area ($S_{BET}$), total pore volume $V_T$), and average pore diameter ($D_{BJH}$), were determined by BET. As a result, SBET of $100m^2/g{\sim}1500m^2/g$ was determined from the $N_2$ adsorption isotherm. Also, the average pore diameter was 2 nm∼4 nm. Mesoporous silica's surface potential of minus charge was determined from zeta potential.
Fuel cells supply electric power and heat at work, and their exhaust gas is comparatively clear. So they are in the limelight as one of the co-generation systems which behave friendly with the environment. Fuel cells discharge both steam and hot water. Accordingly, if we combine absorption heat pump driven by waste heat with fuel cells, we can construct an advanced energy conserving system. The purpose of this study is the objective for evaluating the possibilities of effectively utilizing waste heat of fuel cells as a heat source for the single and double effect absorption systems. Simulation studies on single and double effect absorption have been performed for water/lithium-bromide pair. The effectiveness of introducing a waste heat source of fuel cells is demonstrated. The result of this study showed that total efficiency was about 85% at rated operation and about 75% at 75% load operation. Absorption cycle moved to more strong concentration when fuel cell operated at 75% load.
We have conducted a preliminary numerical analysis to understand the effects of double-diffusive convection on the molar flux at the crystal region during the growth of mercurous bromide ($Hg_2Br_2$) crystals in 1 g and microgravity (${\mu}g$) conditions. It was found that the total molar fluxes decay first-order exponentially with the aspect ratio (AR, transport length-to-width), $1{\leq}AR{\leq}10$. With increasing the aspect ratio of the horizontal enclosure from AR = 1 up to Ar = 10, the convection flow field shifts to the advective-diffusion mode and the flow structures become stable. Therefore, altering the aspect ratio of the enclosure allows one to control the effect of the double diffusive natural convection. Moreover, microgravity environments less than $10^{-2}g$ make the effect of double-diffusive natural convection much reduced so that the convection mode could be switched over the advective-diffusion mode.
To study the health promoting effects of medicinal plants, 30 medicinal plants commonly available in Korea have been evaluated for their antioxidant compounds and antioxidant and antiproliferative activities. Total polyphenolics and flavonoids in the methanolic extracts were measured by spectrophotometric methods and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activities and chelating effects have been determined for antioxidant activities. Moreover, the effects of medicinal plants on cell proliferation of intestinal (Caco-2) and pituitary (GH3) tumor cells were investigated using thiazolyl blue terazolium bromide (MIT) assay. The methanolic extracts of Pueraria thunbergiana and Artemisiae asiatria contained the highest total polyphenolic and flavonoid contents, respectively. P. thunbergiana exhibited the highest antioxidant activities. A. asiatria showed the strongest antiproliferative activity against Caco-2 and Ponciruc trifoliata Rafin and Lophathrum gracile Bronghiart exhibited the highest activities against GH3. Although there was positive correlation between ABTS radical scavenging activity and polyphenolic contents ($R^2=8189$), no relationship was found between antiproliferative and antioxidant activities.

Raphiolepis indica (R. indica) is one of evergreen shrubs belonging to the Rosaceae and is grown wildly in Jeju. This study was performed to evaluate the hepatoprotective effect of different fractions (n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, butanol, water) from R. indica. Anti-oxidative effects were determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and total phenol contents. Hepatoprotective effect was identified by 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay in Huh7 cells. Among various fractions, ethyl acetate and butanol fractions showed the lowest DPPH remained rate reaching approximately 78.7 and 65.5% at $400{\mu}g/mL$. Ethyl acetate and butanol fractions showed the total phenolic content at 164.5 and 137.3 mg GAE/g extract. The ethyl acetate and butanol fractions were resistant against oxidative stress in MTT assay and showed higher hepatoprotective effect than other fractions. Therefore, these results suggest that the ethyl acetate and butanol fractions of R. indica might have therapeutic value in liver damage.

Perilla frutescens (P. frutescens) is one of evergreen shrubs belonging to the Labiatae and is grown wildly in Korea. This study was carried out to evaluate the anti-oxidative effects of Perilla frutescens Extracts by Extraction Methods (water, heating and sonication). Anti-oxidative effects were measured using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and total phenol content. Cell viability and hepatoprotective effects were identified by 3-[4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Among various extracts, P. rutescens extracts by sonication showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity at $5000{\mu}g/mL$. Total phenolic content in P. frutescens extracts by sonication was $51.60{\pm}1.06mg\;GAE/g$ extract. However, P. frutescens extracts did not show hepatoprotective effects. This study identified anti-oxidative effects of P. frutescens extracts by sonication, and it would be necessary to perform further studies of P. frutescens extracts by sonication.
