  • This paper introduces Flux-Reversal Machine(FRM) and presents the design of a FRM to reduce the cogging torque. The effect of the design parameters on the characteristic and cogging torque is analyzed by finite Element Method(FEM). The considered design parameters are bifurcated teeth, chamfered magnet poles, chamfered rotor tooth tips and rotor skewing. As a result, we can find the optimum model reduced cogging torque and torque ripple in 6/8 FRM.

  • This paper introduces Flux-Reversal Machine(FRM) and presents the design of a single phase FRM to improve its starting torque. The effects of the design parameters on the characteristic and starting torque are analyzed by Finite Element Method(FEM). The considered design parameters are tapered airgap, stewed airgap, asymmetric PM width and slotted teeth. As a result, we can find the best model in producing starting torque of a single phase 2/3 FRM

  • Waterhammer and slamming phenomena can occur when power is cut off due to reversal flow in pipeline and sudden close of check valve. Therefore analysis of reversal flow time, which means the time of reversal flow in pipeline due to pumping station blackout, is needed to protect facilities from waterhammer economically and efficiently. However systematic study on reversal flow time has not been done yet. So theory of reversal flow time analysis is proposed and verified with experiment using several parameters like pump specific speed, motor pole number, and characteristic curve of pipeline in this study.

  • In this paper, a novel 12/14 hybrid pole type bearingless switched reluctance motor (BLSRM) with short flux path and no flux-reversal in the stator is proposed. The proposed BLSRM has separated rotating torque and suspending force poles. Because of independent characteristics between torque and suspending force poles, the torque control can be decoupled from the suspending force control. Due to the short flux path without any reversal flux, compared to the 8/10 hybrid stator pole BLSRM, the output torque is significantly improved and the air-gap is easier to control. Meanwhile, basic design principle for the proposed structure is described. To verify the proposed structure, finite element method (FEM) is employed to get characteristics of the proposed structure and 8/10 hybrid stator pole BLSRM. Based on the analysis, a prototype of the proposed BLSRM is designed and manufactured. Finally, validity of the proposed structure is verified by the experimental results.

  • This paper presents an improved direct torque control based on artificial neural networks technique. The major problem that is usually associated with DTC drive is the high torque(speed) ripple. To overcome this problem a torque hysteresis band with variable amplitude is proposed based on artificial neural networks. The artificial neural networks proposed controller is shown to be able to reducing the torque(speed) ripple and dependency on motor parameter and to improve performance DTC especially at high speed and reversal running.

  • In nature, many small insects are using jumping as a survival strategy. Among them, fleas jump in a unique method. They use an elastomer, 'Resilin', an extensor muscle and a trigger muscle. By contracting the extensor muscle, the elastic energy, that makes a flea to jump, is stored in the resilin. After storing energy, the trigger muscle begins contracting and pulling the extensor muscle. When the extensor muscle crosses the rotational joint, direction of torque generated from the extensor muscle reverses, 'torque reversal mechanism'. Simultaneously, the elastic energy stored in the resilin releases rapidly and is converted into the kinetic energy. It makes a flea to jump 150 times its body length. In this paper, miniaturized jumping robot using flea-inspired catapult mechanism is presented. This mechanism is based on the 4-bar linkage and the reversal joint and is actuated by Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) coiled springs describing the flea's muscle. The robot prototype is fabricated by SCM process using glass fiber prepregs and a sheet of polyimide film. The prototype is 20mm link length, 34mm width and 2.0g weight and can jump 103cm.

  • Torsion shear tests under various stress paths were performed to study the behavior of sand during large stress reversal. The stress paths can be classified into the clockwise and the counterclockwise according to torque applied to specimen, and the directions of plastic strain incremental on the stress paths including large stress reversal are compared with the direction of stress state and stress incremental. From test results, the isotropic hardening theory using the principle of St. Venant desirably showed that direction of plastic strain incremental coincided with stress state on primary loading part and nearby failure point, but it might result in a rough approximation on part of unloading and reloading by stress reversal.

  • In this paper, the 6-switch inverter for the Flux-Reversal Motor (FRM) has been presented and compared to the 4-switch inverter for the FRM, which is more popular in cost effective applications. To analyze the FRM, we adopted the two-dimensional time-stepped voltage source finite element method (FEM) that uses the actual pulse width modulation (PWM) voltage waveforms as the input data. As the FRM characteristic analysis of actual pwm voltage input, the torque ripples and iron losses (eddy current and hysteresis loss) of the FRM can be precisely calculated. With the simulated and experimental results, the performance and limitations of the 4-switch FRM which is the cost effective drive compared to the 6-switch FRM drive are provided in more detail.

  • Unstable torsional vibration on the marine ship's propulsion shafting system with diesel engine occurred due to a slippage of multi-friction clutch which was installed between increasing gear and shaft generator. In this paper, the mechanism of this vibration was verified via torsional, whirling, axial and structural vibration measurements of shafting system and noise measurement of gear box. And it was also identified by the theoretical analysis method.

  • The flow field measurements were conducted on the planes between impeller blades, and the gap between the impeller and turbine blades under speed ratio of 0.4. The study showed that high velocity regions move from locations near the suction surface of the impeller to the pressure blade, shroud corner as flow progresses from the mid-chord of impeller passage to exit and out into the gap region. Planes 3 through 5 also showed flow reversal occurring in the area near the shell surface and progress far into the impeller passage from the impeller passage exit, near shell surface. This affected the converter efficiency negatively. This study would aid in the construction of higher accuracy CFD models of this complex turbomachinery device.
