  • Cruise control is a technology for automatically maintaining a steady speed of vehicle as set by the driver via controlling throttle valve and brake of vehicle. In this paper we investigate cruise controller design method with consideration for distance to vehicle ahead. We employ linear time varying (LTV) model to describe longitudinal vehicle dynamic motion. With this LTV system we approximately model the nonlinear dynamics of vehicle speed by frequent update of the system parameters. In addition we reformulate the LTV system by transforming distance to leading vehicle into variation of system parameters of the model. Note that in conventional control problem formulation this distance is considered as disturbance which should be rejected. Consequently a controller can be designed by pole placement at each instance of parameter update, based on the linear model with the present system parameters. The validity of this design method is examined by simulation study.

  • In financial economics studies, the autoregressive model has been a workhorse for a long time. However, the model has a fixed value on every parameter and requires the stationarity assumptions. Time-varying coefficient autoregressive model that we use in this paper offers some desirable benefits over the traditional model such as the parameters are allowed to be varied over-time and can be applies to non-stationary financial data. This paper provides the Monte Carlo simulation studies which show that the model can capture the dynamic movement of parameters very well, even though, there are some sudden changes or jumps. For the daily data from January 1, 2015 to February 12, 2020, our paper provides the empirical studies that Thailand, Taiwan and Tokyo Stock market Index can be explained very well by the time-varying coefficient autoregressive model with lag order one while South Korea's stock index can be explained by the model with lag order three. We show that the model can unveil the non-linear shape of the estimated mean. We employ GJR-GARCH in the condition variance equation and found the evidences that the negative shocks have more impact on market's volatility than the positive shock in the case of South Korea and Tokyo.

  • This paper presents an indirect adaptive control scheme for discrete linear systems whose parameters are not necessrily slowly varying. It is assumed that system parameters are modelled as linear combinations of known bounded functions with unknown constant coefficients. Unknown coefficients are estimated using a recursive least squares algorithm with a dead zone and a forgetting factor. A control law which makes the estimated model exponentially stable is constructed. With this control law and a state observer, all based on the parameter estimates, it is shown that the resulting closed-loop system is globally stable and robust to bounded external disturbances and small unmodelled plant uncertainties.

  • In this study, we analyze the dependence structure of KOSPI and NYSE indices based on a two-step estimation procedure. In the rst step, we adopt ARMA-GARCH models with Gaussian mixture innovations for marginal processes. In the second step, time-varying copula parameters are estimated. By using these, we measure the dependence between the two returns with Kendall's tau and Spearman's rho. The two dependence measures for various copulas are illustrated.

  • In this paper, a self-tuning optimal control algorithm is proposed to retain the optimal performance of an active suspension system, when the vehicle has some time varying parameters and parameter uncertainties. We consider a 2 DOF time-varying quarter car model which has the parameter variation of sprung mass, suspension spring constant and suspension damping constant. Instead of solving algebraic riccati equation on line, we propose a neural network approach as an alternative. The optimal feedback gains obtained from the off line computation, according to parameter variations, are used as the neural network training data. When the active suspension system is on, the parameters are identified by the recursive least square method and the trained neural network controller designer finds the proper optimal feedback gains. The simulation results are represented and discussed.

  • A new modal analysis method for rotor systems with periodically time-varying parameters is proposed. The essence of method is to introduce modulated coordinates to derive the equivalent time-invariant equation. This paper presents a modal analysis method using modulated coordinates fur general rotors, of which rotating and stationary parts both possess asymmetric properties. The equation of motion with time-varying parameters is transformed to an infinite order matrix equation with the time-invariant parameters. A theory of modal analysis for the system is presented with the infinite order equation and a couple of reduced order equations. A numerical example with simple asymmetric rotor is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method

  • A practical iterative channel estimation technique is proposed for the multiple-input-multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system in the high-speed mobile environment, such as high speed railway scenario. In the iterative algorithm, the Kalman filter and data detection are jointed to estimate the time-varying channel, where the detection error is considered as part of the noise in the Kalman recursion in each iteration to reduce the effect of the detection error propagation. Moreover, the employed Kalman filter is from the canonical state space model, which does not include the parameters of the autoregressive (AR) model, so the proposed method does not need to estimate the parameters of AR model, whose accuracy affects the convergence speed. Simulation results show that the proposed method is robust to the fast time-varying channel, and it can obtain more gains compared with the available methods.

  • A need exists for the accurate identification of time series models having time varying parameters, as is important in the case of real time identification of nonstationary EMG signal. Thls paper describes real time identification and muscle fatigue monitoring method of nonstationary EMG signal. The method is composed of the efficient identifier which estimates the autoregressive parameters of nonstationary EMG signal model, and its real time implementation by using T805 parallel processing computer. The method is verified through experiment with real EMG signals which are obtained from surface electrode. As a result, the proposed method provides a new approach for real time Implementation of muscle fatigue monitoring and the execution time is 0.894ms/sample for 1024Hz EMG signal.

  • This research aims to develop an empirical model for simulation of time-varying frequency in earthquake ground motion so as to be used easily in engineering applications. Briefly, 10545 recordings of the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) global database of accelerograms from shallow crustal earthquakes are selected and binned by magnitude, distance and site condition. Then the wavelet spectrum of each acceleration record is calculated by using one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform, and the frequencies corresponding to the maximum values of the wavelet spectrum at a series of sampling time, named predominant frequencies, are extracted to analyze the variation of frequency content of seismic ground motions in time. And the time-variation of the predominant frequencies of 178 magnitude-distance-site bins for different directions are obtained by calculating the mean square root of predominant frequencies within a bin. The exponential trigonometric function is then use to fit the data, which describes the predominant frequency of ground-motion as a function of time with model parameters given in tables for different magnitude, distance, site conditions and direction. Finally, a practical frequency-dependent amplitude envelope function is developed based on the time-varying frequency derived in this paper, which has clear statistical parameters and can emphasize the effect of low-frequency components on later seismic action. The results illustrate that the time-varying predominant frequency can preferably reflect the non-stationarity of the frequency content in earthquake ground motions and that empirical models given in this paper facilitates the simulation of ground motions.

  • Sufficient conditions concerning the perturbation region of system parameters, which guarantee the asymptotic stability of linear time- varying systems, are presented. These conditions are obtained by Lyapunov function approach for continuous-time and discrete-time systems. Also, a computational algorithm using nonlinear programming is proposed for finding the maximum perturbation region which satisfies the sufficient condition for the continuous-time systems. The technique of finding the solution for the continuous-time systems can also be applied to the discrete-time systems. In the continuous-time case, it is shown by an example that the method proposed in this paper yields much larger perturbation region of parameters than other previously reported results. An example of the perturbation region of system paramters for the discrete-time system is also given.
