The backward differentiation formula (BDF) method is applied to a three-dimensional reactor kinetics calculation for efficient yet accurate transient analysis with adaptive time step control. The coarse mesh finite difference (CMFD) formulation is used for an efficient implementation of the BDF method that does not require excessive memory to store old information from previous time steps. An iterative scheme to update the nodal coupling coefficients through higher order local nodal solutions is established in order to make it possible to store only node average fluxes of the previous five time points. An adaptive time step control method is derived using two order solutions, the fifth and the fourth order BDF solutions, which provide an estimate of the solution error at the current time point. The performance of the BDF- and CMFD-based spatial kinetics calculation and the adaptive time step control scheme is examined with the NEACRP control rod ejection and rod withdrawal benchmark problems. The accuracy is first assessed by comparing the BDF-based results with those of the Crank-Nicholson method with an exponential transform. The effectiveness of the adaptive time step control is then assessed in terms of the possible computing time reduction in producing sufficiently accurate solutions that meet the desired solution fidelity.
When large capacity generation stations that consist of several large units tend to pull out of step from main power system, stabilizing control scheme as emergency control for preventing loss of synchronism of the whole stations with the remaining system is devided into two steps that the first step is to perform on-line prediction for out-of-step and the next step is on-line calculation of the amount of generation shedding for the rest of generators to be in step when out of step is expected. This paper presents on-line prediction scheme for out-of-step based on P-$\delta$ curve estimation using real-time measurement and on-line calculation of generation shedding. The proposed stabilizing scheme was applied to case study of real power system and the results obtained by the method compare well with the results by simulation.

This paper provides a practical control scheme called three-step input method in order to minimize both robot response time and the resulting residual vibration when the robot manipulator reaches its defined end point. This work is concerned with defining a simple practical method to utilize step inputs to achieve optimum response. The optimum response is achieved by using a self- adjusting input command function that is obtained during a real time processing . The practicality of this control scheme is demonstrated by using an analog computer to simulate a simulate a simple flexible robot and conventional servo controller. The experiments focus on point-to-point movement. Also, this method requires little computational effort through the intelligent use of conventional servo control technology and the robot's vibration characteristics.

Reference models are used in many control algorithms for improvement of transient response characteristics. They provide desired trajectories that the plant should follow Most control systems have bounded control inputs to avoid saturation of the plant. If we design the reference models that do not account for limits of the control inputs, control performance of the system may be deteriorated. In this paper a new approach of avoiding saturation by varying the reference model for TDC(time delay control) based systems subject to step changes in the reference input. In this scheme, the variable reference model is determined based on the information on control inputs and the size of the step changes in the reference inputs. This scheme was verified by application to the BLDC motor position control system in simulations and experiments. The responses of the TDC with the variable reference model showed better tracking performance than that with the fixed reference model.

Statistical process control (SPC) and engineering process control (EPC) are based on different strategies for processes quality improvement. SPC reduces process variability by detecting and eliminating special causes of process variation. while EPC reduces process variability by adjusting compensatory variables to keep the quality variable close to target. Recently there has been needs for a process control proceduce which combines the tow strategies. This paper considers a combined scheme which simultaneously applies SPC and EPC techniques to reduce the variation of a process. The process model under consideration is an integrated moving average(IMA) process with a step shift. The EPC part of the scheme adjusts the process back to target at every fixed monitoring intervals, which is referred to a repeated adjustment scheme. The SPC part of the scheme uses an exponentially weighted moving average(EWMA) of observed deviation from target to detect special causes. A Markov chain model is developed to relate the scheme's expected cost per unit time to the design parameters of he combined control scheme. The expected cost per unit time is composed of off-target cost, adjustment cost, monitoring cost, and false alarm cost.
The primary difficulties encountered in the use of step motors are underdamped response when stopping at a specified position and dynamic instability during high-speed slewing. This paper proposes a speed and position detection scheme using the back EMF generated by the rotating permanent magnet field of a two-phase 1.8.deg. hybrid step motor, and presents its application to the state-variable feedback control of the hybrid step motor. All simulation results in a single step response show that the hybrid step motor performances such as peak overshoot and settling time are greatly improved.

We propose a new switching control scheme for a ball and beam system by utilizing two linearization methods. First, the Jacobian linearization is applied and state observer is developed afterward. Then, motivated [6], the approximate input-output linearization is carried out, and after that, the Jacobian linearization is applied along with the design of state observer. Since the second approach requires two linearizations, it is called a two-step linearization method. The state observer is needed for the estimation of the velocities of ball and motor movement. Since the Jacobian linearization based controller tends to provide faster response at the initial time, and after that, the two-step linearization based controller tends to provide better response in terms of output overshoot and convergence to the origin, it is natural to give a switching control scheme to provide the best overall control response. The validity of our control scheme is shown in both simulation and experimental results.
This paper presents a discrete-time approximate linear model of the continuous-time pulse-width-modulated linear system, and then, by employing the resultant model, a simple LQ suboptimal control scheme is proposed for a DC-DC step-down buck converter. The proposed scheme effectively regulates the output voltage to the desired level, which is also verified by the numerical simulation.
This paper proposes a Direct Power Control (DPC) scheme of improved command tracking capability for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) Medium Voltage (MV) Wind Turbines. Benchmarking is performed based on a neutral point clamped three-level back-to-back type voltage source converter. It is introduced to design the DPC modeling and propose DPC scheme of a three-level NPC (3L-NPC) converter. During the fault condition in wind farms, the proposed control scheme directly controls the generated output power to the command value from the hierarchical wind farm controller. The proposed control scheme is compared with conventional control scheme as respect to loss and thermal analysis. The DPC scheme of improved command tracking capability is confirmed through PLECS simulations. Simulation result shows that proposed control scheme achieves a much shorter transient time in a step response of generated output power. The proposed control scheme makes it possible to provide a good dynamic performance for PMSG MV wind turbine to generate a high quality output power under grid fault condition.
This paper presents a theoretical study of a model predictive control (MPC) strategy employed in semi-active control system with magnetorheological (MR) dampers to reduce the responses of seismically excited structures. The MPC scheme is based on a prediction model of the system response to obtain the control actions by minimizing an objective function, which can compensate for the effect of time delay that occurred in real application. As an example, a 5-story building frame equipped with two 20 kN MR dampers is presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed MPC scheme for addressing time delay and reducing the structural responses under different earthquakes, in which the predictive length l = 5 and the delayed time step d = 10, 20, 40, 60, 100 are considered. Comparison with passive-off, passive-on, and linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control strategy indicates that MPC scheme exhibits good control performance similar to the LQG control strategy, both have better control effectiveness than two passive control methods for most cases, and the MPC scheme used in semi-active control system show more effectiveness and robustness for addressing time delay and protecting structures during earthquakes.
