Creep and shrinkage have pronounced effects on the long-term deflection of prestressed concrete members. Under repeated loading, the rate of creep in prestressed concrete members is often accelerated. In this paper, an iterative computational procedure based on the well known Model B3 for creep and shrinkage was developed to predict the time-dependent deflection of partially prestressed concrete members. The developed model was validated using the experimental observed deflection behavior of a simply supported partially prestressed concrete beam under repeated loading. The validated model was then employed to make predictions of the long-term deflection of the prestressed beams under a variety of conditions (e.g., water cement ratio, relatively humidity and time at drying). The simulation results demonstrate that ignoring creep and shrinkage could lead to significant underestimation of the long-term deflection of a prestressed concrete member. The model will prove useful in reducing the long-term deflection of the prestressed concrete members via the optimal selection of a concrete mix and prestressing forces.
Stress relaxation behaviors of the cucumber under bending moment were tested with UTM at three levels of loading rate and initial deflection ratio. Sample cucumber was selected from three cultivars of cucumber, Cheongjangmadi, Baekdadagi, and Gyeousalicheongjang, because these cultivars are the most popular grown cultivars in Korea. When the bending moment was applied to the cucumber sample, the effective span between simple supports was held a constant value of 116mm with consideration of the selected sample length. The objectives of this study were to develop the rheological models such as linear and nonlinear models of the stress relaxation for the cucumber samples, and to investigate the effects of loading rate and initial deflection ratio on the stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber. The results of this study may be summarized as follows : 1. Stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber could be well described by the generalized Maxwell model for each level of deflection ratio. But the stress relaxation behavior of the sample was found to be initial deflection ratio and time dependent, and it was represented the nonlinear viscoelastic model as a function of initial deflection ratio and time. 2. Stress relaxation behavior of the cucumber samples was very highly affected by the loading rate and the initial deflection ratio. The more loading rate and initial deflection ratio resulted in the more initial bending stress and after stress relaxation progressed more rapidly. 3. At the same test conditions, it was found that the stress relaxation rate of Cheongjangmadi was faster than that of other cultivars.
The long-term stability of rock engineering is significantly affected by the time-dependent deformation behavior of rock, which is an important mechanical property of rock for engineering design. Although the hard rocks show small creep deformation, it cannot be ignored under high-stress condition during deep excavation. The inner mechanism of creep is complicated, therefore, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between microscopic creep mechanism and the macro creep behavior of rock. Microscopic numerical modeling of sandstone creep was performed in the investigation. A numerical sandstone sample was generated and Parallel Bond contact and Burger's contact model were assigned to the contacts between particles in DEM simulation. Sensitivity analysis of the microscopic creep parameters was conducted to explore how microscopic parameters affect the macroscopic creep deformation. The results show that the microscopic creep parameters have linear correlations with the corresponding macroscopic creep parameters, whereas the friction coefficient shows power function with peak strength and Young's modulus, respectively. Moreover, the microscopic parameters were calibrated. The creep modeling curve is in good agreement with the verification test result. Finally, the creep curves under one-step loading and multi-step loading were compared. This investigation can act as a helpful reference for modeling rock creep behavior from a microscopic mechanism perspective.
The purpose of this study was to use a ternary polymeric matrix system for high drug loading of a highly soluble drug for controlled release delivery. The controlled drug delivery of diltiazem HCl (solubility > 50% in water at $25^{\circ}C$) with high loading dose (the final loading dose of drug was 34%) from a ternary polymeric matrix (gelatin, pectin, HPMC) was successfully accomplished. This simple monolithic system with 240 mg drug loading provided near zero-order release over a 24 hour-period by which time the system was completely dissolved. The release kinetics of diltiazem HCl tablet with high loading dose from the designed ternary polymeric system was dependent on the ratios of HPMC : pectin binary mixture. The release rate increased as pectin : HPMC ratio were increased. Swelling behavior of the ternary system and the ionic interaction of formulation components with cationic diltiazem molecule appear to control drug diffusion and the release kinetics. Comparable release profiles between commercial product and the designed system were obtained. The binding study between gelatin with diltiazem HCl showed the presence of two binding sites for drug interaction with subsequent controlled diffusion upon swelling. This designed delivery system is easy to manufacture and drug release behavior is highly reproducible and offers advantages over the existing commercial product.
This paper is concerned with the time dependent service load behaviour of prestressed composite tee beams. The effects of creep and shrinkage of the concrete slab are modelled using the age adjusted effective modulus method and a relaxation approach. The tendon strain is determined considering compatibility of deformations and equilibrium of forces between the tendon and the composite tee beam. A parametric study is undertaken to study the influence of various aspects on the stress, strain and deformations of the concrete slab, steel beam and prestressing tendon. The effect of loading type and tendon relaxation has also been considered for various types of prestressing tendon materials. Recommendations are then made in relation to adequate span to depth ratios for varying levels of prestressing force.
A time-dependent large deformation fracture theory is developed for application to soft biological tissues. The theory uses the quasilinear viscoelastic theory of Fung, and particularizes it to constitutive assumptions on polyvinyl-chloride (PVC) (Part I) and cartilage (Part II). This constitutive theory is used in a general viscoelastic theory by Christensen and Naghdi and an energy balance to develop an expression for the fracture toughness of the materials. Experimental methods are developed for measuring the required constitutive parameters and fracture data for the materials. Elastic stress and reduced relaxation functions were determined using tensile and shear tests at high loading rates with rise times of 25-30 msec, and test times of 150 sec. The developed method was validated, using an engineering material, PVC to separate the error in the testing method from the inherent variation of the biological tissues. It was found that the the proposed constitutive modeling can predict the nonlinear stress-strain and the time-dependent behavior of the material. As an approximation method, a pseudo-elastic theory using the J-integral concept, assuming that the material is a time-independent large deformation elastic material, was also developed and compared with the time-dependent fracture theory. For PVC. the predicted fracture toughness is $1.2{\pm}0.41$ and $1.5{\pm}0.23\;kN/m$ for the time-dependent theory and the pseudo-elastic theory, respectively. The methods should be of value in quantifying fracture properties of soft biological tissues. In Part II, an application of the developed method to a biological soft tissue was made by using bovine humeral articular cartilage.

The nanoindenter and AFM have been used for nanofabrication, such as nanolithography, nanowriting, and nanopatterning, as well as measurement of mechanical properties and surface topology. Nanoscale indents can be used as cells for molecular electronics and drug delivery, slots for integration into nanodevices, and defects for tailoring the structure and properties. Therefore, it is very important to make indents of desired morphology (shape, size and depth). Indents of different shapes can be obtained by using indenters of different geometries such as a cube comer and conical and spherical tips. The depth and size of indents can be controlled by making indentations at different indentation loads. However, in case of viscoplastic viscoelastic materials such as polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) the time dependent deformation (TDD) should also be considered. In this study, the effect of process parameters such as loading rate and hold-time at peak load on the indent morphology (maximum penetration depth, elastic recovery, transient creep recovery, residual depth pile-up height) of PMMA were studied for hyperfine pattern fabrication.

Based on a refined shear deformation finite strip, transient vibrations of graphene oxide powder (GOP) reinforced plates due to external pulse loads have been investigated. The plate has uniformly and linearly distributed GOPs inside material structure. Applied pulse loads have been selected as sinusoidal, linear and blast types. Such pulse loads result in transient vibrations of the GOP-reinforced plates which are not explored before. Finite strip method (FSM) has been performed for solving the equations of motion and then inverse Laplace transform technique has been employed to derive transient responses due to pulse loading. It is reported in this study that the transient responses of GOP-reinforced plates are dependent on GOP dispersions, GOP volume fraction, type of pulse loading, loading time and load locations.
In this study, developments of an efficient visco-hyperelastic constitutive equation for describing the time dependent material behavior accurately in dynamic and impact loading and finding related materials constants are considered. Based on proposed constitutive model, behaviour of a hollow cylinder elastomer bushing under different dynamic and impact loading conditions is studied. By implementing the developed visco-hyperelastic constitutive equation to LS-DYNA explicit dynamic finite element software a three dimensional model of the bushing is developed and dynamic behaviour of that in axial and torsional dynamic deformation modes are studied. Dynamic response and induced stress under different impact loadings which is rarely studied in previous researches have been also investigated. Effects of hyperelastic and visco-hyperelastic parameters on deformation and induced stresses as well as strain rate are considered.
Statement of problem. One of the common problems of provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials is that when they are subjected to constant loads for a long period of time, they exhibit a dimensional change (creep). Purpose. The aim of this study was to investigate the viscoelastic behaviour of polymer-based provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials with time at constant compressive load. Material and methods. Three dimethacrylate-based materials (Protemp 3 Garant, Temphase, Luxatemp) and one monomethacrylate-based material (Trim) were selected. Dimensional changes of the specimens were recorded by a LVDT to evaluate their viscoelastic behavior and creep strain. For all specimens, two loading procedures were used. At first, static compressive stress of 4 MPa was applied for 30 minutes and followed by 1 hour of strain recovery. Then, after 24 hours of water storage, the specimens were loaded again. The creep values between materials were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison $Scheff\acute{e}$ test. Independent samples t-test was also used to identify the difference of creep strain between first and secondary loading conditions at the significance level of 0.05. Results. Following application of the first loading, Trim showed the highest maximum creep strain (32.7%) followed by Luxatemp, Protemp 3 Garant and Temphase, with values of 3.78%, 2.86% and 1.77%, respectively. Trim was significantly different from other materials (P<0.05), while there were no significant differences among Luxatemp, Protemp 3 Garant and Temphase (P>0.05). The highest recovery and permanent set of Trim, were significantly different from those of others (P<0.05). At the secondary loading of the dimethacrylate-based materials, creep deformation, recovery and permanent set decreased and the percentage of recovery increased, while in Trim, all values of the measurements increased. This result showed that the secondary loading at 24 hours produced a significant creep magnitude. Conclusion. The dimethacrylate-based provisional crown and fixed partial denture materials showed significantly higher creep resistance and lower deformation than the monomethacrylate-based material. Thus, monomethacrylate-based materials should not be used in long-term stress-bearing situations.
