Background: The purpose of this research was to examine the fall incidence rate and its related factors of fall in inpatients. Methods: The data were collected from the 138 fall incident reports in one tertiary hospital in Seoul from April 1st 1999 to September 30th 2001. The Fall Incident Report Form was originally developed based on that of Massachusetts General Hospital revised in 1995. And this was modified for this survey by the collaborating work of QI team including researcher and department of nursing service of this particular hospital. The contents of Fall Incident Form were general characteristics of patient. factors related to fall. types and places of fall. circumstances, nursing interventions. and outcome. Results: 1) The incidence rate of fall was 0.08% of total discharged patients and 0.081 per 1000 patient-day. This incidence rate is much lower than that of several hospitals in USA. This finding might result from the different incidence report system of each hospital. 2) The characteristics of fall-prone patient were found as follows. They were mostly over 60 years old, in alert mental status, ambulatory with some assistance, and dependent on ambulatory device. The types of diseases related high incidence rate were cerebrovascular disease(3.2), hypertension(1.6), cardiovascular disease(1.4), diabetes(1.3) and liver disease(0.6). 3) The majority of fall events usually occurred m bed. bedside(walking or standing) and bathroom in patient room. Usually they were up on their own when they fell. And there were more falls of elderly occurred during night time than day or evening. 4) 63.8% of fall events resulted in physical injuries such as fracture and usually the patients had diagnostic procedures and some treatment(ex. suture) which caused additional cost to the patients and their families. 5) The found risk factors of fall were drugs(antihypertensive drug, diuretics) and environmental factors like too high bed height, long distance of bedside table and lamp switch, and slippery tile of bathroom floor. Conclusion: Considering these results, every medical and nursing staff should be aware of the risk factors of patients in hospital, and should intervene more actively the preventive managements, specially for the elderly patients during night. Therefore, it is recommended that the development of Fall Prevention Programs based on these results.
Fourteen healthy volunteers ranged in ages from 20 to 30 were served to administrate two types of yoghurt (2 bottles/day) such as one added uncapsulated-Bifidobacteria (Y-UCB) and the other added capsulated-Bifdobacteria (Y-CB) for 4 weeks, and the changes of intestinal microflora and fecal properties were studied. After administration of Y-UCB, the viable cell counts of fecal Bifidobacteria (p<0.01) and Lactobacilli (p<0.05) were significantly increased, however, fecal pH, moisture content and tile viable cell counts of coliform bacteria in feces were not changed when they were compared to those before administration (control). After administration of Y-CB, the viable cell counts of Bifidobacteria were significantly increased (p<0.01) and viable cell counts of coliform bacteria were significantly decreased (p<0.05), however, fecal pH, moisture content, and viable cell counts of Lactobacilli were not changed when they were compared to those before administration. High level of fecal Bifidobacteria and low pH were maintained after 2 weeks from ceasing the administration of both types of yoghurt when they were compared to those before administration. In conclusion, there were not significant differences between two types, Y-CB and Y-UCB in the changes of fecal pH, moisture content, and the viable cell counts of Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli, coliform bacteria after the administration.
Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) was tested for the removal of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) by using simulated aquaculture system. RBC performance was evaluated by controlling revolution rate of disk and hydraulic residence tile (HRT). The optimum revolution rate of disk was 4 rpm, As HRT of RBC was increased, TAN removal efficiency of RBC and TAN concentration of rearing water were increased. HRT for maintaining lowest TAN concentration of rearing water was 9.5 minutes and at that condition TAN concentration of rearing tank was $1.03 g/m^3$
With Saxidomus Purpuratus which were sampled near Yungdo, in the harbor of Pusan during the period from September 1967 to October 1968, the author investigated the maturity against seasonal change of water temperature; and shell length, height and width against live weight, respectively, and the reciprocal correlations of shell length, height and width, as well. The maturity, concerned deeply with tile developing procedure of gonad, is dependent on the change in water temperature. The value of maturity becomes higher from March to May, but in August with high temperature the value decreases temporarily. During the main spawning season from the late August to the middle of October, the value shows the peak throughout a year. After the period, it has decreased until January when the water temperature is below $10^{\circ}C$ The equations of shell length against live weight for male($W=0.4749L^{2.62307}$)and for female ($W=0.3438L^{2.77993}$) shell height against live weight ($W=0.3221L^{3.06661}$), and shell width against live weight ($W=3.5868L^{2.46646}$), show non-straight lines respectively. On the other hand, th: equations of shell length against shell height Y=0.818x+0.292 (r=0.958), shell length against shell width Y=0.520x+0.200 (r=0.799) and shell height against shell width Y=0.499x+0.516 (r=0.773) show straight lines, respectively.
The freshwater shrimp, Macrobrachium nipponensis is one of the largest species as well as one of the Important types of food. It can be found widely in rivers and swamps from Che-ju island in the south to Chung-ju in the north. The larval development of these shrimps was studied by Yu (1966) and CHUN and YU (1967), but they didn't provide any other features. Shrimps for the present study were collected from the Ntk-Dong River, near Pusan, once each month from March to December 1963. The following is a summary of the results. 1. The relationship between the carapace length (X) and the body length (Y) is: Y=2.68996X+1.14784 in female. Y=2.73121X+1.10827 in male. 2. The relationship between the carapace length(X)_ and tile basipodite length of the 2nd pereiopode (Y) is: Y=0.16910X-0.06422 in female Y=0.19410X-0.06075 in male. 3. The relationship between the carapace length (X) and the ischiorodite length of the 2nd pereiopode (Y) is: Y= 0.48524X-0.10812 in female. Y= 0.69052X-0.28616 in male. 4. The relationship between the carapace length(X) and the meropodite length of the End pereiopode (Y) is: Y=0.51217X-0.04088 in female. Y= 1.9792X-0.98258 in male. 5. The relationship between the carapace length (X) and the carpopodite length of the 2nd pereiopode (Y) is: Y=0.87701X-0.33919 in female. Y=2.00091X-1.64116 in male. 6. The relationship between the carapace length (X) and the propodite length of the 2nd pereiopode (Y) is: Y= 1.04672 X-0.50727 in female. Y=2.67663X-2.40488 in male. 7. The relationship between the carapace length (X) and the dactylopodite length of the 2nd pereiopode (Y) is: Y=0.26366 X+0.15743 in female. Y=1.04866 X-0.67781 in male.

Five lactic acid bacteria (LAB) including 2 Lactobacillus strains isolated from Kimchi were evaluated to determine the binding ability to Caco-2 cells and $AFB_1$. LAB were divided into three different groups ; viable, heat-treated, and acid-treated cells. In the radioactive-labeling assay for bound cell counting, viable Lactobacillus Plantarum KCTC 3099 showed the higher adhesion to Caco-2 cells with the binding capacity of $39.2\%$, which was $149\%$ higher than Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG as a positive control. Leuconostoc mesenteroids KCTC 3100 showed the similar binding ability to L. rhamnosus GG. After 1 hour incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ with $AFB_1$, viable L. Planterum KTCC 3099 removed the toxin by $49.8\%$, which was similar level to L. rhamnosus GG. Both heat- and acid-treated groups showed high binding effect but acid-treated group was more effective for both Caco-2 cell binding and $AFB_1$ removal than the other. These results indicate that components of bacterial cell wall might be involved in tile binding to intestinal cells and toxins.

This study has been carried out to understand the effect of Hovenia dulcis on the hyperglycemic mice induced with streptozotocin (STZ). Mice in control group were administered with $0.9\%$ saline (2 mL/kg), and experimental groups were administered Hovenia dulcis extract (H1 group, 0.01 g/kg: H2 group, 0.04 g/kg) after hyperglycemic state was induced. Blood glucose concentrations of tile H1 and H2 groups administered with Hovenia dulcis extract for 6 weeks were significantly (p<0.01), compared to control group. Blood glucose tolerance was more favorable in H1 and H2 groups than control group. The Langerhan's islet of pancreas was destructed by treatment of STZ in the control group, but pancreatic islet of the experimental groups was partially recovered from damage, and a number of insulin-positive cells were observed. A number of insulin-like growth factor- I and II (IGF-I and IGF-II) positive cells occurred in the acinar cells of H1 and H2 groups. These results suggest that administration of Hovenia dulcis extract help mice recover from the damage induced with STZ.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of water extract of green tea (GT), persimmon leaf (PL) and safflower seed (SS) on heme synthesis and erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activities in lead (Pb)-administered rats. Male rats were divided into five groups. a normal, Pb-control (Pb-Con), Pb-GT, Pb-PL and Pb-55 groups with ten rats per group. Pb (25 mg/kg. BW) was orally administerd once a day for 4 weeks. The extract of GT, PL and 55 were administered based on 1.26 g of raw traditional tea/kg BW/day. Blood hematocrit, homoglobin level and red blood cell counts were significantly lower in rb-Con group than in normal group. However, the supplementation of GT, PL and 55 were effective to improve the hematological parameters. Plasma AST and ALT activities were significantly lower in Pb-GT, Pb-PL, Pb-SS groups than in Pb-Con group. The $\delta$ -amino-levulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) activity of blood and liver were significantly lowered in Pb-Con group com-pared to those of the normal group. The ALAD activity in Pb administered rats was recovered to tile normal level by the water extract of GT, PL and 55 supplementation. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and catalse activities were significantly higher in Pb-Con group than in normal group, whereas glutathione peroxidase activity was lowered in Pb administered rats. The extract of GT, PL and SS supplement attenuated changes of these erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme activities by Pb intoxication.

Antimicrobial activity of Rhus javanica (RJ) extract against animal husbandry disease-related bacteria was determined by a paper disc method. The RJ extracts showed a significant antimicrobial activity against Gram positive (+) bacteria and especially the activity was most potent against L. monocytogenes and S. epidermidis. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the MeOH and EtOH extracts of RJ were in the range of 0.8 ∼ 16 mg/mL and 0.8 ∼ 10 mg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, among five solvent fractions (n-hexane, CHC1$_3$, EtOAc, n-BuOH and $H_2O$ frs.) from MeOH extract of RJ, the EtOAc fr. exhibited the most significant antimicrobial activity The antimicrobial activities of RJ extracts against most microbial strains were unstable by either heat treatment or acid treatment. The inhibitory effect of RJ extracts on microbial cell growth was further examined by the addition of 0, 100, 300, and 500 ppm of RJ extracts into growth medium. The growth of gram positive (+) bacteria, S. aureus, S. epidermidis and L. monocytogenes was inhibited for 72 hours when at least 300 ppm of RJ extracts added, but the growth of gram negative (-) bacteria was only inhibited when at least 500 ppm of RJ extracts were added. Taken together, tile antimicrobial activities of RJ extracts were more effective against gram positive (+) bacteria compared to those against gram negative (-) bacteria.

As a basic research for the development of a non-invasive blood glucose sensor using millimeter waves, we have presented a method for measuring the dielectric properties of high loss dielectrics, based on the reflection method, and investigated the variation of the dielectric properties of glucose-water and glucose -0.9% NaCl solutions in the 10~90 GHz range. In the proposed method, a minimal reflection condition is formed by placing a specially-chosen low-loss plane-parallel plate in front of a high-loss medium under test at a given frequency range. Using the minimal power reflection coefficient and the corresponding frequency at this condition, tile dielectric properties of the medium can be determined. The measured results on pure water have shown the adequacy of the proposed method. The measured results on glucose-water and glucose -0.9% NaCl solutions in the 10~90 GHz range showed that the variations of the dielectric properties of glucose solutions according to the change of their glucose concentration were maximum in the 30~45 GHz range. From these facts we concluded that the variation of about 3 mole/L in the glucose solutions must be distinguished With the measurement accuracies of ±0.1 dB and ±0.01 GHz.
