The purpose of this study is to present a plan to activate the production and consumption of environmently friendly agricultural products through an analysis on the understanding degree, the level and inclination of consumption, the satisfaction degree of consumption, and the comprehension degree of production and circulation process of the environmently friendly agricultural products. 1 reviewed the literature and did survey In this study. The results are as follows : (1) As a result of an analysis on the understanding degree of the environmently friendly agricultural products, it is shown to get 6.37 points out of 10 and also, there is a difference between age, educational background, and income level. (2) In the case of research on the method to distinguish the environmently friendly agricultural products from others, it is proved that consumers have a strong faith on quality guarantee marks and there is a difference between gender, income level, and consumption period. (3) It is also shown that consumers purchase environmently friendly agricultural products for the family member's health in the survey on the motivation for purchasing them. And also, there is a difference between men and women. (4) The result of the survey on the consumption scale of the environmently friendly agricultural products shows that 94 people(60.3%) spend more than 50% of their gloss foodstuffs cost purchasing them and 20 people(12.8%) spend 30-50%. (5) In the survey on the amount and the frequency of the purchasing items of the envirounently friendly agricultural products, respondents count livestock products mostly in amount while point out main cereals and a kinds of soy and pastes in frequency. (6) Consumers ask that the price of environmently friendly agricultural products is a little expensive or reasonable and there is no differences between individual groups. (7) In the case of the purchase of foreign environmently friendly agricultural products, there are more people who want to purchase domestic ones than those who want foreign ones. Therefore, it is shown that environmently friendly agricultural products have a counterpower after the market-open to import. (8) As a result of the analysis on the quality of environmently friendly agricultural products, it is proved that they have better quality than general agricultural products and also, it is found out that women feel larger differences than men in quality. (9) In the analysis on the satisfaction degree of the environmently friendly agricultural products, it is proved that respondents trust the safety and nutrition of them whereas they are not satisfied with the external shape of them. (10) It is analyzed that tile conversion of consumer's consciousness is the most critical factor for development of environmently friendly agriculture. (11) The factors to activate the consumption of environmently friendly agricultural products are proved in order of the enlargement of direct transaction, the conversion of consumer's consciousness, the easiness of purchase, activating consumers'unions, and publicity.

Guh Sung Y.L.S-95 (GS95) is a kind of polyacidic solution, which contains acetic acid as a main component. We investigated in the present study tile genetic toxicity of GS95 according to the standard operation procedure from Korean Institute of Toxicology. In the Salmonella typhimurium reverse mutation assay using TA1535, TA1537, TA98 and TA100, GS95 did not induce mutation up to $5,000{\mu}g/plate$. GS95 did not induce chromosome aberration in Chinese hamster lung fibroblast in the concentration range between 1.25 and 5 mg/mL. In the rodent micronucleus assay, the frequency of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocyte in GS95 treated mice were not increased up to 5,000 mg/kg compared to the vehicle treated mice. Taken all these data together, GS95 was proven to be nongenotoxic in the concentration ranges tested.

The investigation to evaluate the possible effects of fish behaviour on acoustic target strength was carried out during the 1997 and 1998 hydroacoustic-demersal trawl surveys in the southern waters of Korea.The swimming speed and the target strength of individual, acoustically resolved fished swimming through the sound beam were measured using the split-beam tracking method on board R/V Kaya.The results obtained can be summarized as follows:1. The alongship and athwartship angles between -3dB poionts of a hull mounted 38 kHz split beam tranducer used in these surveys was >$3.76^{\circ}\;and\;6.74^{\circ}$ respectively, and the equal energy contour obtained from the measured beam pattern showed approximately the circular pattern. 2. The swimming speed measured off the south coast of Sorido in 23 January 1997 ranged 0.10 to 0.80 m/s with the average swimming spped of 0.36 m/s, and the target strength ranged -64.8 to -31.7 dB with the average target strength of -52.7 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Japanese scaled sardine, Sardinella zunasi and Konoshiro gizzard shad, Konosirus punctatus, respectively.3. The swimming speed measured off the east coast of Kojedo in 24 March 1997 ranged 0.10 to 1.10 m/s with the average swimming speed of 0.40 m/s, and the target strength ranged -64.8 to -51.5 dB with the average target strength of -59.2 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Swordtip squid, Photololigo edulis, Konoshiro gizzard shad and Japanese flying squid, Toddarodes pacificus, respectively and the swimming activity of these species seems to be controlled at speeds between 0.20 and 0.60 m/s. 4. The swimming speed measured the south coast of Kojedo in 25 March 1997 ranged 0.10 to 1.40 m/s with the average swimming speed of 0.51 m/s and the target strength ranged -64.3 to -47.7 dB with the average target strength of -55.1 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Swordtip squid, Blotchy sillage, Sillago maculata and japanese scaled sardine, respectively and the swimming activity of these species seems to be controlled at speeds between 0.20 and 0.70 m/s.5. The swimming speed measured during morning twilight in the southeastern water of Cheju Island in 11 July 1998 ranged 0.20 to 1.0 m/s with the average swimming speed of 0.53 m/s, and the target strength ranged -65.0 to -47.0 dB with the average target strength of -57.1 dB. The most dominant species sampled in this survey area were Swordtip squid, Black scraper, Thamnaconus modesutus and japanese flying squid, respectively and the tile angle ranged$ +28^{\circ}\;to\;+2^{\circ}$ with the average tilt angle of -8.1$^{\circ}$ showing the downward migration.

In this paper, ascending functions of the pool-and-weir fishway which has been established for the upstream migration of migratory fish at Jamsil Weir in the lower part of the Han River was assessed by applying tile Existing Fishway Measurement Method, and measures to improve these functions were suggested. The primary fish which ascended the fishway during the period of measurement was Erythroculter erythropterus Basilewsky, greater than 29cm in the body length. A total of 361 individual fish were collected with traps established at the exit of the fishway The maximum ascending capacity for the fish was 2.53${\times}$10^{-3}$ fish/hr/g. The fishway of Jamsil Weir does not satisfy the various fish species inhabiting in the river. Especially, small fishes of lower swimming ability may not ascend the fishway because the difference in water levels between upper and lower pools in the fishway was too large at the exit and there was too much discharge flowing into the fishway. This fishway does not have a roll in the ascending function for other species except Erythroculter erythropterus Basilewsky and Hemibarbus labeo Pallas, for which swimming ability is great. In order to improve the ascending function of the fishway, the structures of the fishway need to be changed so that various species in the river can easily ascend and the fishway function be taken into consideration in operation of the gates of the weir. Additional construction of fishways on both sides of the lower flow channel are needed to correct a decline in the fishway effectiveness due to continuous flow over the fixed part of the weir.
Background : Since 2001 the Korean Association of Health Promotion has attempted to establish her own reference valves that can be used in her all fifteen branch laboratories instead of using those adapted from the published data or there commended data by the reagent companies supplied as inserts. However, the previous two reference values derived from the statistics(year 2001 and 2002) were need to adjust to apply to actual practice. Besides there was an unavoidable situation that the reagent has to be changed to other companies in 2002 that creates another statistical problem. Subsequently, the third attempt to derive the reference ranges of tests in KAHP to solve those problems and define common)v acceptable reference ranges was done and and reported here. Methods : Al1 the results performed during January 2, 2003 through September 30, 2003 were collected in Excel tile format. All the data include dthe necessary information such as age and sex. The age was grouped in six; baby(0-3y), children(4-l2y), adolescent(13-l8y), adult(19-S4y), younger elderly (65-79y),old elderly(oyer 80y), with references of statistics in medical informatics and WHO classification. The data were statistically analyzed with SAS 6.04 for-Gaussian distribution as the previous two occasions. None of the tests showed Gaussian distribution. These procedures had been repeated twice or three times after trimming out the results lying outside three standard deviations. Though, all the tests showed non-Gaussian distribution. Subsequently, the reference ranges were defined in the range from the point of lower 2.5% to the point of higher 97.5 %. And in case the lower range could be "0", the reference ranges were defined in the range of 0 to 95%.Results : The reference ranges of most of 56 test items were newly assigned. Also with adaptation of the recommendation of WHO etc. on fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin, cholesterol. Among these there were eight tests that needed reference ranges by the age groups and nine tests by the sex. Conclusions : The third attempt will credit more the reference range of all15 laboratories of Korean Association of Health Promotion, which will be essential part of the better service to the patient and clients to visit KAHP.
In the previous studies, settlement behaviors of granular compaction piles have generally been analyzed with an evaluation of the settlement reduction factor based on tile load-sharing ratio and the replacement ratio. In this approach, however, since the reinforced ground with granular compaction piles is simplified as the composite ground, only the difference of a relative vertical strength between piles and soils is taken into account without reflecting lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles. In the companion research paper, the method of estimating the settlement of granular compaction piles was proposed by synthetically considering a vertical strength of the ground, lateral behaviors of granular compaction piles, the strength of pile materials, a pile diameter, and an installation distance of the pile. In the presented study, to validate a propriety of the previously proposed method, large scale field load tests and three dimensional numerical analyses are performed. The results are analyzed in detail and compared with the predicted settlements by the proposed method. Finally, a simple method to estimate the settlement of granular compaction piles is suggested for an easy application of the practical design.

Cooking characteristics of rice uncoated and coated with prickly pear water extracts (4% v/w for rice) were investigated. Prickly pear contained 83.22 mg% of $\alpha$-aminoadipic acid and 75.61 mg% of tyrosine as major free amino acids. After cooking, the coated rice contained 1.66 mg% of $\alpha$-aminoadipic acid which was not found in the uncoated rice. The free amino acid composition of the coated rice revealed significantly higher contents (about 2.0 to 4.2 times) of arginine, histidine, leucine, lysine and tyrosine compared with those of the uncoated rice. The major minerals in the prickly pear were Ca, K and Mg accounting for 95% of the total minerals present. After cooking, the mineral contents in the coated rice were higher by 10~45% than those in the uncoated rice. The coated rice showed lower hardness, gumminess and brittleness, and higher cohesiveness than the uncoated rice. In sensory evaluation, there were no differences in sweet taste, and overall and color acceptability between the uncoated and coated rice. However, tile coated rice showed higher scores for savory and sticky taste than the uncoated rice.

Improvement of hygienic quality of powdered raw grains and vegetables by fermentation was investigated. Luc-tobacillus sp. isolated from kimchi was used as a starter. The cell counts of coliform group and SS enteric bacteria on the SS agar plate in raw grains and vegetables were 2.3$\times$103 cfu/mL and 8.6$\times$10$^3$ cfu/mL, respectively. The starlet, Lactobacillu sp., reached 10$^{7}$ cfu/mL after 48 hr in fermentation. At that time, the coliform group and enteric bacteria on the SS agar plate were gradually inactivated and eliminated after 60 hr of fermentation. During the fermentation process, pH of the suspension was lowered and acidity increased. Antimicrobial activity of the acidic supernatant of fermented raw grains and vegetal]les against the E. coli sp. and Salmonella sp. was higher than that of lactic acid solution or neutralized supernatant. Therefore, it was considered that antimicrobial effect of the fermented raw grains and vegetal]les might be accelerated by tile synergic effect of acid and bacteriocin, and liquid fermentation of powdered raw grains and vegetables will be effective for inactivation of hygienic microorganisms.

Obtaining powder form of seaweed is essential for the use of seaweed as a food additive. The deterioration of seaweed caused by high temperatures during homogenization and powder processing is a serious problem and limits the use of seaweed as a food or pharmaceutical ingredient. Furthermore, many powder particles are not fluidized very well because of the interaction between particles. In order to solve this problem, sea tangle was hydrolyzed to a level of single cell detritus (SCD) by Vibrio sp., isolated from Batillus cornutus. with strong hydrolytic activity. The crude protein and amino acid contents of sea tangle SCD were higher than those of the powder, whereas the reverse was true for ash content. Sea tangle powder contained more mineral than its SCD, whereas total amino acid content was 5 times more in SCD than in power. The anticancer activities of sea tangle SCD and powder were 31.20 and 29.07%, respectively, with no significant difference (p<0.05), but about 15% higher than that of the control. The ACE inhibitory activity of the sea tangle powder, 39.31%, was higher than the 26.07% of the SCD. The antithrombin activity of the sea tangle powder, 55.3 seconds, was higher than the 34.5 seconds of the SCD. Moreover, there was no antioxidative and ischemic activities in both tile sea tangle powder and SCD.

The mushroom Inonotus obliquue (IO) has been traditionally used for the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer in Russia, Poland, and most of Baltic countries. To explore the possibility that IO has chemoprevention effects, we examined whether or not the aqueous extract of IO inhibits HT-29 cell growth and investigated tile mechanism for this effect. Cells were incubated in the presence of increasing concentrations of the aqueous extract of IO. The extract substantially inhibited the viable HT-29 cell number in a dose-dependent manner and inhibited 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine incorporation into DNA of HT-29 cells. Annexin-V staining followed by flow cytometry revealed that the extract induced apoptosis of HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Western blot analysis of total cell lysates revealed that the extract induced cleavage of caspase-8, -9 and -3 and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase, but did not affect the protein levels of Bax and Bcl-2. In addition, the extract dose-dependently increased the activity of caspase-8, -9 and -3. We have demonstrated that the aqueous extract of IO inhibits cell proliferation and induces apoptosis in HT-29 cells, which may be mediated by its ability to activate the caspase pathway.
