Reinforced concrete column is an effective structural element to take advantage of high strength concrete. This paper presents an experimental and analytical strength of high strength concrete rectangular tied column sections under eccentric loading. The test variables are concrete strength, steel ratios, slenderness and eccentricity. The analytical results of the ACI's rectangular stress block, Zia's modified rectangular stress block, and a trapezoid block are compared with experimentally obtained data. It may be concluded that the trapezoid stress block provided the most reasonable column section capacities for high strength concrete columns.
This paper presents a study carried out for the seismic capacity in reinforced concrete(RC) piers by the confinement effect of transverse reinforcement as such a hooked-tied, welded-tied and spiral reinforcement. In order to assess the seismic capacity with transverse reinforcement, experiment리 and analytical methods were adopted. A RC column survey was conducted based on eight one-fourth scale single circular column specimens designed and tested under slow horizontal cyclic loads. Two cases were analyzed. The confinement effect of concrete by transverse reinforcement is considered not in Case 1 but in Case 2. Also, we studied the propriety of making use of the method in which a carbon fiber rod replace spiral reinforcement in RC piers. In experimental tests, a welded-tied and spiral reinforcement has a good seismic capacity, but a carbon fiber rod presents low ductility in comparison with a hooked-tied reinforcement. In an analytical study, displacement ductility is approximate to the experimental result because of considering the confinement effect of the transverse reinforcement. Even if the confinement effect of the transverse reinforcement is considered, the analytical results for ductility of the specimens with welded-tied and spiral reinforcement show an excessive underestimation of the experimental results.

Two strengthened columns and an unstrengthened control column were tested to failure under cyclic lateral load combined with a constant axial load to effect of anchorage of T-shaped steel plate in the strengthened column using wire rope units. Main variables considered were anchorage method of T-shaped steel plate. Tested columns were compared with those of conventionally tied columns tested by research of before. Test results showed that lateral load capacity and the displacement ductility ratio of anchorage of T-shaped steel plate in the strengthened column increased 40% and 130% than unstrengthened column, respectively. In particular, at the same effective lateral reinforcement index, a much ductility ratio was observed in the strengthened columns than in the tied columns.
In the present paper the problem of monotonically compressed concrete columns is studied numerically, accounting for transverse steel reinforcement and concrete cracking. The positive confinement effect of the ties on the core concrete is modeled explicitly and studied in the case of distributed or concentrated vertical load. The main aim is to investigate the influence of transverse reinforcement steel characteristics on the column load carrying capacity and ductility, in order to provide an evaluation about some standards requirements about the class and ductility of steel to be used for ties. The obtained results show that the influence of transverse reinforcement steel class of ductility is negligible both on the column load carrying capacity and on its ductility. Also the dissipated energy is basically unchanged. In view of these evidences, some standards requirements about the steel class of ductility to be used for ties appear to be rather questionable.

With increasing use of high strength concrete tied columns in structural engineering, it becomes necessary to examine the applicability of related sections of current design codes. High strength concrete has an advantage of strength capacity and stiffness especially for column elements. This paper presents an experimental study of high strength concrete tied columns subjected to eccentric loading. The main variables included in this test were concrete compressive strength, steel amount, eccentricity, and slenderness ratio. The concrete compressive strength varied from 34.9Mpa(356kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$
) to 93.2Mpa(951kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$
) and the longitudinal steel ratios were between 1.1% and 5.5%. The eccentricity was selected for the different failure modes, i.e., compression control, balanced point, and tension control. The slenderness ratio varied from 19 to 61. The column specimens with same slenderness ratio but with different concrete compressive strength were constructed and tested. The purpose of this paper is to show failure modes of high strength reinforced concrete columns.

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of transverse steel in reinforced concrete tied columns subjected to monotonically increasing axial compression. Eighteen large-scale columns($260{\times}260{\times}1,200mm$) were tested. Effects of such main variables as concrete compressive strength, configurations of transverse steel, transverse reinforcement ratio, spacing of transverse steel, and spalling of concrete cover were investigated. High-strength concrete columns under concentric axial loads show extremely brittle behavior unless the columns are confined with transverse steel that can provide sufficiently high lateral confinement pressure. A consistent decrease in the deformability of the column test specimens was observed with increasing concrete strength. Test results of this study were compared with existing confinement models of modified Kent-Park, Sheikh-Uzumeri, Mander, and Saatcioglu-Razvi. The comparison indicates many existing models to predict the behavior of confined concrete overestimate or underestimate the ductility of confined concrete.

High strength concrete is a more effective material for columns subject to axial force and moment than for other structural elements. The purpose of this study is to review strength calculation methods for high strength concrete columus by comparison of analytical values and experimental results. The variables of column test under eccentric loading were concrete compressive strength, longitudinal steel ratio, and eccentricity of load. The tied column sections of 120×120mm and 210×210mm were tested and the eccentricity of load varied in the range from 0.16 times to 0.54 times the column depth. The analytical results using the stress-strain relationship to 0.54 times the column depth. The analytical results using the stress-strain relationship as well as the ACI's rectangular block, Zia's modified block, and the trapezoidal block are compared with experimentally obtained data, and discussed in this paper.

To analyze the effects compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio on second-order moment of columns, 30tied rein reinforced concrete columns with hinged ends were tested. The 80mm square cross section was used and the amount of eccentricity was 24mm. The compressive strengths of column specimens with slenderness ratios of 10, 60, and 100were 250, 648 and 880kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and the longitudinal steel ratios were 1.98%(4-D6) and 3.95%(8-D6). The ratio of ultimate load capacity to that of short column with the same eccentricity (Pu/Pn) was much decreased at high slenderness ratio with increasing the compressive strength of concrete. And the lateral displacement of slender column at the ultimate load was decreased as the strength was increased. These are due to that at high slenderness ratio the load capacity and behavior of column are affected by flexural rigidity. And, it was also found that with increasing steel ratio, the value of Pu/Pn and the lateral displacement at the ultimate load were larger for the same slenderness ratio.
The interaction between concrete core expansion and deformation of perimeter ties has been known to have a significant effect on the effective confinement of rectangular reinforced concrete (RC) tied columns. This interaction produces passive confining pressure to the concrete core. Most existing models for determining the response of RC tied columns do not directly account for the influence of flexural stiffness of the ties and the variation of confining stress along the column height. This study presents a procedure for determining the confined compressive strength of RC square columns confined by rectilinear ties with various tie configurations considering directly the influence of flexural flexibility of the ties and the variation of confining stress along the vertical direction. The concept of area compatibility is employed to ensure compatibility of the concrete core and steel hoop in a global sense. The proposed procedure yields satisfactory predictions of confined strengths compared with experimental results, and the influence of tie flexibility, tie configuration and degree of confinement can be well captured.

This paper is a part of a research plan aimed at the verification of basic design rules of high-strength concrete columns. A total of 19 slender column specimens were tested to measure secondary moment and stiffness of eccentrically loaded reinforced concrete tied columns. Main variables included in this test program were concrete compressive strength, steel amount, eccentricity, and slenderness ratio. The concrete compressive strength varied from 356kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 951kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the longitudinal steel ratios were between 1.13% and 5.51%, and slenderness ratios were 40 and 61. Calculated moment magnification factors and column stiffness based on design codes are higher than the test results for high axial load under small eccentricity, for higher slenderness ratio, for lower longitudinal steel ratio, and for high-strength concrete. The moment magnification method of the current design codes may provide a very conservative design for high-strength concrete slender column.
