A three-dimensional flow simulation is performed to investigate the flow field in the ski resort on complex terrain. The present paper aims to study the wind effects of mountainous terrain on the gondola safety. Strong wind happens in the ski resort on the mountain by complex terrain and it causes the dangerous accident of gondola. A digital map around the ski resort area is used to model the actual complex terrain for a 3-D analysis domain. Wind direction and speed to be used as a boundary condition are taken from local meteorological reports. The numerical results show details of the velocity distribution around a ski resort. From the results, we can suggest the modification of the installation of gondola for the safety due to strong wind.
A three-dimensional flow simulation was performed to investigate the wind flow around wind-power generation facilities on mountainous area of complex terrain. A digital map of eastern mountainous area of Korea including a wind farm was used to model actual complex terrain. Rotating wind turbines in the wind farm were also modeled in the computational domain with detailed geometry of blade by using the frozen rotor method. Wind direction and speed to be used as a boundary condition were taken from local meteorological reports. The numerical results showed not only details of flow distribution in the wind farm but also the variation in the performance of the wind turbines due to the installed location of the turbines on complex terrain. The wake effect of the upstream turbine on the performance of the downstream one was also examined. The methodology presented in this study may be used in selecting future wind farm site and wind turbine locations in the selected site for possible maximum power generation.
Wind action is a factor of fundamental importance in the structural design of light or slender constructions. Codes for structural design usually assume that the incident mean wind velocity is parallel to the ground, which constitutes a valid simplification for frequent winds caused by meteorological phenomena such as Extratropical Storms (EPS) or Tropical Storms. Wind effects due to other phenomena, such as thunderstorms, and its combination with EPS winds in so-called squall lines, are simply neglected. In this paper a model that describes the three-dimensional wind velocity field originated from a downburst in a thunderstorm (TS) is proposed. The model is based on a semi empirical representation of an axially-symmetrical flow line pattern that describes a stationary field, modulated by a function that accounts for the evolution of the wind velocity with time. The model allows the generation of a spatially and temporally variable velocity field, which also includes a fluctuating component of the velocity. All parameters employed in the model are related to meteorological variables, which are susceptible of statistical assessment. A background wind is also considered, in order to account for the translational velocity of the thunderstorm, normally due to local wind conditions. When the translation of the TS is caused by an EPS, a squall line is produced, causing the highest wind velocities associated with TS events. The resulting vertical velocity profiles were also studied and compared with existing models, such as the profiles proposed by Vicroy, et al. (1992) and Wood and Kwok (1998). The present model predicts horizontal velocity profiles that depend on the distance to the storm center, effect not considered by previous models, although the various proposals are globally compatible. The model can be applied in any region of interest, once the relevant meteorological variables are known, to simulate the excitation due to TS winds in the design of transmission lines, long-span crossings, cable-stayed bridges, towers or similar structures.

A numerical method for the assessment and correction of tunnel wall interference effects on forced-oscillation testing is presented. The method is based on the wall pressure signature method using computed wall pressure distributions. The wall pressure field is computed using unsteady three-dimensional full Navier-Stokes solver for a 70-degree pitching delta wing in a wind tunnel. Approximately-factorized alternate direction implicit (AF-ADI) scheme is advanced in time by solving block tri-diagonal matrices. The algebraic Baldwin-Lomax turbulence, model is included to simulate the turbulent flow effect. Also, dual time sub-iteration with, local, time stepping is implemented to improve the convergence. The computed wall pressure field is then imposed as boundary conditions for Euler re-simulation to obtain the interference flow field. The static computation shows good agreement with experiments. The dynamic computation demonstrates reasonable physical phenomena with a good convergence history. The effects of the tunnel wall in upwash and blockage are analyzed using the computed interference flow field for several reduced frequencies and amplitudes. The corrected results by pressure signature method agree well with the results of free air conditions.

Background: High-fidelity meteorological data is a prerequisite for the realistic simulation of atmospheric dispersion of radioactive materials near nuclear power plants (NPPs). However, many meteorological models frequently overestimate near-surface wind speeds, failing to represent local meteorological conditions near NPPs. This study presents a new high-resolution (approximately 1 km) meteorological downscaling method for modeling short-range (< 100 km) atmospheric dispersion of accidental NPP plumes. Materials and Methods: Six considerations from literature reviews have been suggested for a new dynamic downscaling method. The dynamic downscaling method is developed based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model version 3.6.1, applying high-resolution land-use and topography data. In addition, a new subgrid-scale topographic drag parameterization has been implemented for a realistic representation of the atmospheric surface-layer momentum transfer. Finally, a year-long simulation for the Kori and Wolsong NPPs, located in southeastern coastal areas, has been made for 2016 and evaluated against operational surface meteorological measurements and the NPPs' on-site weather stations. Results and Discussion: The new dynamic downscaling method can represent multiscale atmospheric motions from the synoptic to the boundary-layer scales and produce three-dimensional local meteorological fields near the NPPs with a 1.2 km grid resolution. Comparing the year-long simulation against the measurements showed a salient improvement in simulating near-surface wind fields by reducing the root mean square error of approximately 1 m/s. Furthermore, the improved wind field simulation led to a better agreement in the Eulerian estimate of the local atmospheric dispersion. The new subgrid-scale topographic drag parameterization was essential for improved performance, suggesting the importance of the subgrid-scale momentum interactions in the atmospheric surface layer. Conclusion: A new dynamic downscaling method has been developed to produce high-resolution local meteorological fields around the Kori and Wolsong NPPs, which can be used in short-range atmospheric dispersion modeling near the NPPs.

In this paper, the applicability and usefulness of windprofiler input data were investigated to generate three dimensional wind field. A logical diagnostic model CALMET with windprofiler data at ten sites and with weather forecasting model WRF output was evaluated by statistically comparing with the radiosonde data at eight sites. The horizontal wind speed from CALMET simulated with hourly windprofiler data is in good agreement with radiosonde observations within 1.5 m/s of the root mean square error, especially local circulation of wind such as sea breeze over the coastal region. The root mean square error of wind direction ranged $50^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}$ is due to the wind direction error from the windprofiler polluted by ground clutters. Since the exact wind can be produced quickly and accurately in most of the altitude with windprofiler data on CALMET, we expect the method presented in this study to be useful for the monitoring of safe environment as well as weather in the coastal zone.
The numerical modeling and comparison with observations are performed to find out the detailed structure of meteorology and the characteristic of related dispersion phenomena of the non-reactive air pollutant at Kyoungin region, South Korea, where several industrial complex including Siwha, Banwol and Namdong is located. MM5 (Fifth Generation NCAR/Penn State Mesoscale Model), 3-D Land/sea breeze model and 3-D diagnostic meteorological model have been utilized for the meteorological simulation for September, 2002 with each different spatial resolution, while 3-D Eulerian air dispersion model for the air quality study. We can see the simulated wind field shows the very local circulation quitely well compared with in-site observations in shoreline area with complex terrains, at which the circulation of Land/sea breeze has developed and merged with the mountain and valley breeze eventually. Also it is shown in the result of the dispersion model that the diurnal variation and absolute value of daily mean $SO_2$ concentrations have good agreement with observations, even though the instant concentration of $SO_2$ simulated overestimates around 1.5 times rather than that of observation due to neglecting the deposition process and roughly estimated emission rate. This results may indicate that it is important for the air quality study at shoreline region with the complex terrain to implement the high resolution meteorological model which is able to handle with the complicate local circulation.

A three-dimensional ocean circulation model was applied to a shallow estuary, Mobile Bay, to study local wind setup and setdown. Tides started from the northern Gulf of Mexico propagates up to the Mobile River system which is located in the north of the Mobile Bay. However, the tides started in the south of Mobile Bay were distorted when travelling upstream while affected by river discharge and local winds. The water surface elevation was less/over predicted responding north/south winds, respectively, when winds only at the Dauphin Island station (DPI) were used. However, the model predicted water surface elevation better when using two local winds from DPI and Mobile Downtown Airport (MDA). Wind speeds were greatly reduced (~ 88%) in about 43 km distance between DPI and MDA, and the canopy effects may be the reason for this. For this reason, the local winds are greatly responsible for local surface elevation setup and setdown especially at the shallow estuary like Mobile Bay.

The quality of the radar and profiler network was estimated to forecast difficult meteorological situations. A network of UHF Doppler wind profilers and Doppler weather radars have been deployed all over the Korean Peninsular, with dense spatial resolution between instruments. The radar network allows to retrieve the three dimensional dynamics and to analyze the numerical model outputs at small and meso scales. This work has seldom been performed in any other place of the world, with such a high resolution. The wind field from radar network is a good agreement with the background wind fields based on the numerical modeling. This study will be helpful to forecast severe weathers as well as local meteorological phenomena.
A few high-mass X-ray binaries-consisting of an OB star plus compact companion-have been observed by Fermi and ground-based Cerenkov telescopes like High Energy Stereoscopic System (HESS) to be sources of very high energy (VHE; up to 30 TeV) ${\gamma}$-rays. This paper focuses on the prominent ${\gamma}$-ray source, LS 5039, which consists of a massive O6.5V star in a 3.9-day-period, mildly elliptical ($e{\approx}0.24$) orbit with its companion, assumed here to be an unmagnetized compact object (e.g., black hole). Using three dimensional smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations of the Bondi-Hoyle accretion of the O-star wind onto the companion, we find that the orbital phase variation of the accretion follows very closely the simple Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) rate for the local radius and wind speed. Moreover, a simple model, wherein intrinsic emission of ${\gamma}$-rays is assumed to track this accretion rate, reproduces quite well Fermi observations of the phase variation of ${\gamma}$-rays in the energy range 0.1-10 GeV. However for the VHE (0.1-30 TeV) radiation observed by the HESS Cerenkov telescope, it is important to account also for photon-photon interactions between the ${\gamma}$-rays and the stellar optical/UV radiation, which effectively attenuates much of the strong emission near periastron. When this is included, we find that this simple BHL accretion model also quite naturally fits the HESS light curve, thus making it a strong alternative to the pulsar-wind-shock models commonly invoked to explain such VHE ${\gamma}$-ray emission in massive-star binaries.
