Since most of yacht sails are made of thin fabric, they form cambered sail shape that can efficiently generate lift power by aerodynamic interaction and by external force delivered from supporting structures such as mast and boom. When the incident flow and external force alter in terms of volume or condition, the shape of sail also change. This deformation in shape has impact on the peripheral flow and aerodynamic interaction of the sail, and thus it is related to the deformation of the sail in shape again. Therefore, the precise optimization of aerodynamic performance of sail requires fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. In this study, the simplified sail without camber was under experiment for one-way FSI that uses the result of flow analysis to the structural analysis as load condition in an attempt to fluid-structure interaction phenomenon. To confirm the validity of the analytical methods and the reliability of numerical computation, the difference in deformation by the number of finite element was compared. This study reproduced the boundary conditions that sail could have by rigs such as mast and boom and looked into the deformation of sail. Sail has non-linear deformation such as wrinkles because it is made of a thin fabric material. Thus non-linear structural analysis was conducted and the results were compared with those of analysis on elastic material.
Dynamic buckling of structure is one of the failure modes that needs to be considered since it may result in catastrophic failure of the structure in a short period of time. For a thin fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) plate under compression, buckling is an inherent hazard which will be intensified by the existence of defects like holes, cracks, and delamination. On the other hand, the growth of the delamination is another prime concern for thin FRP plates. In the current paper, reinforcing the plates against buckling is realized by using SMA wires in the form of stitches. A numerical framework is proposed to simulate the dynamic instability emphasizing the effect of the SMA stitches in suppressing delamination growth. The suggested algorithm is more accurate than the other methods when considering the transformation point of the SMA wires and the modeling of the cohesive zone using simple and yet reliable technique. The computational design of the method by producing the line by line orders leads to a simple algorithm for simulating the super-elastic behavior. The Lagoudas constitutive model of the SMA material is implemented in the form of user material subroutines (VUMAT). The normal bilinear spring model is used to reproduce the cohesive zone behavior. The nonlinear finite element formulation is programmed into FORTRAN using the Newmark-beta numerical time-integration approach. The obtained results are compared with the results obtained by the finite element method using ABAQUS/Explicit solver. The obtained results by the proposed algorithm and those by ABAQUS are in good agreement.
Many researcher's efforts have made a significant advancement of space frame structure with various portion, and it becomes the most outsanding one of space structures. However, with the characteristics of thin and long term of spacing, the unstable behavior of space structure is shown by initial imperfection, erection procedure or joint, especially space frame structure represents more. This kind of unstable problem could not be set up clearly and there is a huge difference between theory and experiment. Moreover, the discrete structure such as space frame has more complex solution, this it is not easy to derive the formulation of design about space structure. In this space frame structure, the character of rise-span ratio or load mode is represented by the instability of space frame structure with initial imperfection, and snap-through or bifurcation might be the main phenomenon. Therefore, in this study, space frame structure which has a lot of aesthetic effect and profitable for large space covering single layer is dealt. And because that the unstable behavior due to variation of inner force resistance in the elastic range is very important collapse mechanism, I would like to investigate unstable character as a nonlinear behavior with a geometric nonlinear. In order to study the instability. I derive tangent stiffness matrix using finite element method and with displacement incremental method perform nonlinear analysis of unit space structure, star dome and 3-ring star dome considering rise-span $ratio(\mu}$ and load $ratio(R_L)$ for analyzing unstable phenomenon.
Steel materials, which are normally used in bridge structures, are prone to corrosion and have thin plate structures. Steel bridges that have been damaged through increased vehicle load and corrosion are frequently expected to be strengthened. Repair or strengthening methods generally include cutting, bolting, and welding. The basic characteristics of stress and deformation behavior generated by cutting and welding in the course of the repair work, however, are not yet understood. It is difficult to say whether the safety of the structure after welding conforms with existing safety evaluation methods. Therefore, to gain confidence in the material and to guarantee the safety of the structure after welding, the stress generated by heat, through welding and cutting, was generalized. The effect of additional loads with respect to stress generated by heat was also investigated.

This paper addresses a method for shape optimization of a continuous elastic body considering stability, i.e., buckling behavior. The sensitivity formula for critical load is analytically derived and expressed in terms of shape variation, based on the continuum formulation of the stability problem. Unlike the conventional finite difference method (FDM), this method is efficient in that only a couple of analyses are required regardless of the number of design parameters. Commercial software such as ANSYS can be employed since the method requires only the result of the analysis in computation of the sensitivity. Though the buckling problem is more efficiently solved by structural elements such as a beam and shell, elastic solids have been chosen for the buckling analysis because solid elements can generally be used for any kind of structure whether it is thick or thin. Sensitivity is then computed by using the mathematical package MATLAB with the initial stress and buckling analysis of ANSYS. Several problems we chosen in order to illustrate the efficiency of the presented method. They are applied to the shape optimization problems to minimize weight under allowed critical loads and to maximize critical loads under same volume.

Applications of corrugated plates (or folded plates) have been recently increasing due to certain economic and structural advantages. Likewise, applications of corrugated plates has been increasing because they are stronger compared to flat plates. Therefore, specifications of corrugated plates should be determined. There are many design details in almost every specification for flat plates. However, except the bending strength and the normal strength, there are no detailed design guides such as shear strength. Thus, it is difficult for engineers to design structures consisting of corrugated plates. As such, engineers need a guide in designing corrugated plates. Extensive numerical study was conducted in order to identify the relationship between the shear strength and geometric conditions for corrugated plates. An eight-node thin shell element (QSL8) of the commercial program LUSAS (version 13.2) was used. The study was able to come up with a formula that helps determine the shear strength of corrugated plates under various geometric conditions, the size of corrugation, the curvature of corrugation, and the thickness of the corrugated plate. Likewise, corrugated plates were found to have a higher shear buckling strength than flat plates.

Instability of a thin film attached to a compliant substrate often leads to emergence of exquisite wrinkle patterns with length scales that depend on the system geometry and applied stresses. However, the patterns that are created using the current techniques in polymer surface engineering, generally have low aspect ratio of undulation amplitude to wavelength, thus, limiting their application. Here, we present a novel and effective method that enables us to create wrinkles with a desired wavelength and high aspect ratio of amplitude over wavelength as large as to 2.5:1. First, we create buckle patterns with high aspect ratio of amplitude to wavelength by deposition of an amorphous carbon film on a surface of a soft polymer poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Amorphous carbon films are used as a protective layer in structural systems and biomedical components, due to their low friction coefficient, strong wear resistance against, and high elastic modulus and hardness. The deposited carbon layer is generally under high residual compressive stresses (~1 GPa), making it susceptible to buckle delamination on a hard substrate (e.g. silicon or glass) and to wrinkle on a flexible or soft substrate. Then, we employ glancing angle deposition (GLAD) for deposition of a high aspect ratio patterns with amorphous carbon coating on a PDMS surface. Using this method, pattern amplitudes of several nm to submicron size can be achieved by varying the carbon deposition time, allowing us to harness patterned polymers substrates for variety of application. Specifically, we demonstrate a potential application of the high aspect wrinkles for changing the surface structures with low surface energy materials of amorphous carbon coatings, increasing the water wettability.

Purpose: Pitanguy conducted a series of anatomical studies on "dermocartilaginous ligament" of the nose. However, information on its structure is as yet insufficient, especially in terms of its origin, insertion, and relationships with surrounding tissues. In addition, some of the histologic findings described by Pitanguy are controversial. The present study was undertaken to clarify the anatomy of the "dermocartilaginous ligament". Methods: Sixteen cadaver noses were examined macroscopically and histologically to determine the presence, origin, insertion, composition, and relationship of the "dermocartilaginous ligament" with surrounding structures. Results: The structure originated from the deep layer of the transverse nasalis muscle and terminated at the caudal edge of the septal cartilage in all 16 cadavers. However, in three cadavers the insertion extended to the orbicularis oris muscle. No direct connection was found between the structure and dermis of dorsal nasal skin. The dermocartilaginous ligaments were mainly composed of a condensation of thin collagen bundles, which were interwoven and without any regular orientation. Elastic fibers were also present in small numbers, and there were few amorphous ground substances. Neither muscle fibers nor chondrocytes was identified within dermocartilaginous ligaments. Conclusion: Our macroscopic and histologic findings of the structure do not support the use of the term "dermocartilaginous ligament". According to its origin, insertion, and histologic findings, we recommend that this structure be referred to as the "median musculocartilaginous fascia".

The propellant tank, which is a space launch vehicle structure, must have structural integrity as various static and dynamic loads are applied during ground transportation, launch standby, take-off and flight processes. Because of these characteristics, the propellant tank cylinder, the structural object of this study, has a thin thickness, so buckling due to compressive load is considered important in the cylinder design. However, the existing buckling design standards such as NASA and Europe are fairly conservative and do not reflect the latest design and manufacturing technologies. In this study, nonlinear buckling analysis is performed using various analysis models that reflect initial defects, and a method for establishing new buckling design standards for cylinder structures is presented. In conclusion, it was confirmed that an effective lightweight design of the cylinder structure for common bulkhead propulsion tank could be realized.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) has become an attractive cast-in-place repairing material for existing engineering structures. The present study aims to investigate age-dependent high-early-strength UHPC (HESUHPC) material properties (i.e., compressive strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, and tensile strength) as well as interfacial shear properties of HESUHPC-normal strength concrete (NSC) composites cured at different season temperatures (i.e., summer, autumn, and winter). The typical temperatures were kept for at least seven days in different seasons from weather forecasting to guarantee an approximately consistent curing and testing condition (i.e., temperature and relative humidity) for specimens at different ages. The HESUHPC material properties are tested through standardized testing methods, and the interfacial bond performance is tested through a bi-surface shear testing method. The test results quantify the positive development of HESUHPC material properties at the early age, and the increasing amplitude decreases from summer to winter. Three-day mechanical properties in winter (with the lowest curing temperature) still gain more than 60% of the 28-day mechanical properties, and the impact of season temperatures becomes small at the later age. The HESUHPC shrinkage mainly occurs at the early age, and the final shrinkage value is not significant. The HESUHPC-NSC interface exhibits sound shear performance, the interface in most specimens does not fail, and most interfacial shear strengths are higher than the NSC-NSC composite. The HESUHPC-NSC composites at the shear failure do not exhibit a large relative slip and present a significant brittleness at the failure. The typical failures are characterized by thin-layer NSC debonding near the interface, and NSC pure shear failure. Two load-slip development patterns, and two types of main crack location are identified for the HESUHPC-NSC composites tested in different ages and seasons. In addition, shear capacity of the HESUHPC-NSC composite develops rapidly at the early age, and the increasing amplitude decreases as the season temperature decreases. This study will promote the HESUHPC application in practical engineering as a cast-in-place repairing material subjected to different natural environments.
