Almost all professions organize into their own occupational organizations, Through these organizations, professionals try to awaken to and pursue their own group interests. Moreover, the members of a profession endeavor to develop an occupational ideology through their organization. Based on this occupational ideology, these individuals try to expand the span of their control on the occupation's related areas. Finally, they work to build an organizational structure that can be easily reproduced so as to facilitate the creation of new branches of the organization in the future. Efforts toward strengthening the organization and securing its status have greatly affected the professionalization of Korean oriental medicine. In 1952, a Korean Oriental Medicine Doctors' organization was created, and since then it has developed rapidly. Since the 1970s, many colleges of Korean oriental medicine have opened and the number of Korean oriental medicine doctors has grown. Many branches of the initial Korean Oriental Medicine Doctors' organization have been established, and as a result, these organizations have developed in quantity as well as in quality.
With global aging, the number of patients with heart failure has increased markedly. Heart failure is a complex condition intricately associated with aging, organ damage, frailty, and cognitive decline, resulting in a poor prognosis. The relationship among frailty, sarcopenia, cachexia, malnutrition, and heart failure has recently received considerable attention. Although these conditions are distinct, they often exhibit a remarkably close relationship. Overlapping diagnostic criteria have been observed in the recently proposed guidelines and position statements, suggesting that several of these conditions may coexist in patients with heart failure. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of these conditions is essential, and interventions must not only target these conditions individually, but also provide comprehensive management strategies. This review article provides an overview of the epidemiology, diagnostic methods, overlap, and prognosis of frailty, sarcopenia, cachexia, and malnutrition in patients with heart failure, incorporating insights from the FRAGILEHF study data. Additionally, based on existing literature, this article discusses the impact of these conditions on the effectiveness of guideline-directed medical therapy for patients with heart failure. While recognizing these conditions early and promptly implementing interventions may be advantageous, further data, particularly from well-powered, large-scale, randomized controlled trials, are necessary to refine personalized treatment strategies for patients with heart failure.
Objectives : The purpose of this report was to introduce 3 cases of patients diagnosed with both medial collateral ligament tear and meniscal tear that showed clinical improvement after Korean medicine treatment. Methods : These patients received Korean herbal medicine, pharmacopuncture treatment, and acupuncture treatment. We assessed these cases by using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Western Ontario and McMaster Universities'Arthritis Index (WOMAC), and the European Quality of Life-5 Dimension Index (EQ-5D). Results : After Korean medicine treatment, most of the NRS, WOMAC, and EQ-5D scores showed improvement on every discharge date of these 3 cases. The NRS and WOMAC scores of all cases showed a decrease. The EQ-5D of all cases showed an increase. Conclusions : Through this research, we concluded that Korean medicine treatment can be helpful in relieving pain and improving the quality of life and function of knee joint movement in patients with medial collateral ligament tear and meniscal tears.

Pathogens Burkholderia pseudomallei (Bp) and Burkholderia mallei (Bm) contain a large number (> 12,000) of Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs). To study the extent to which these features have contributed to the diversification of genes, we have conducted comparative studies with nineteen genomes of these bacteria. We found 210 genes with characteristic types of SSR variations. SSRs with nonamer repeat units were the most abundant, followed by hexamers and trimers. Amino acids with smaller and nonpolar R-groups are preferred to be encoded by the variant SSRs, perhaps due to their minimal impacts to protein functionality. A majority of these genes appears to code for surface or secreted proteins that may directly interact with the host factors during pathogenesis or other environmental factors. There also are others that encode diverse functions in the cytoplasm, and this protein variability may reflect an extensive involvement of phase variation in survival and adaptation of these pathogens.
Objectives The aim of this review is to analyze research trends on the Korean medical treatment and study of fracture. Methods We searched 38 studies related treatment of fracture via Korean medicine web databases. We classified these studies by three types (experimental reports, case reports and retrospective reports) and researched how to treat the patient of fracture. Results 38 studies were published since 1993 and published every year since 2004 to 2013. There were 8 experimental reports, 20 case reports and 10 retrospective reports. Most of these studies were effective to treat of fracture. Bee venom treatment and Hua-Tuo-Jia-Ji-Xue acupuncture treatment were more effective than general treatment. Conclusions These results suggest that Korean medicine is effective treatment to fracture and we need continuously agonize and research more effective therapy method.
The Purpose of the current study is to understand population learning with coercive isomorphism in the Korean Business Groups. Can we observe isomorphic phenomena by coercive isomorphism? Why do these happen? What mechanisms are embedded in the coercive isomorphism. To answer these questions this study focused on the two Korea's largest Chaeblos the Samsung and Hyundai. An empirical study to compared daily routines used in these two Chaeboles and contents analysis on the founders' characteristics were performed. Three major mechanisms were suggested as main processes to impact the formation of the coercive isomorpism in the two Korean Chaebols. Research implications were discussed at the end of study.
To gain information on retrotransposons in the genome of Paragonimus westermani, PCR was carried out with degenerate primers, specific to protease and reverse transcriptase (rt) genes of long-terminal-repeat (LTR) retrotransposons. The PCR products were cloned and sequenced, after which 12 different retrotransposon-related sequences were isolated from the trematode genome. These showed various degrees of identity to the polyprotein of divergent retrotransposon families. A phylogenetic analysis demonstrated that these sequences could be classified into three different families of LTR retrotransposons, namely, Xena, Bel, and Gypsy families. Of these, two mRNA transcripts were detected by reverse transcriptase-PCR, showing that these two elements preserved their mobile activities. The genomic distributions of these two sequences were found to be highly repetitive. These results suggest that there are diverse retrotransposons including the ancient Xena family in the genome of P. westermani, which may have been involved in the evolution of the host genome.
Objectives : The purpose of these clinical cases is to evaluate the effectiveness of Korean medical therapy on neck pain with cervical syringomyelia Methods : These are case reports on 2 patients admitted to Daejeon jaseng Hospital of Korean Medicine with neck pain and diagnosis of cervical syringomyelia by Cervical spine Magnetic Resonance Imaging, were observed during hospitalization. They were analyzed according to pain and Cervical spine Range of Motion. All patients received a combination of treatments including Acupunture, Chuna, Pharmacopunture, Herbal medication. Pain scales(Number Rating Scale, Neck Disability Index) and Cervical spine Range of Motion were used during hospitalization. Results : After 3 weeks for these patients, Cervical spine Number Rating Scales decreased from 7 to 3 and from 9 to 4 respectively. And Trapezius muscle Number Rating Scales decreased from 7 to 3 and from 2 to 1 respectively. Also Cervical spine Range of Motion improved to the normal. Conclusions : Korean medical therapy might be effective in reducing pain and improving range of motion for patients with neck pain. And we hope this study further confirmed the effectiveness of Korean medical therapy on neck pain with cervical syringomyelia.
Objectives: We aimed to compare the external herbal dispensary (EHD) evaluation criteria for pharmacopuncture and the Korea Good Manufacturing Practice (KGMP) sterile medicine standards to contribute to the establishment of quality control criteria for pharmacopuncture. Methods: We obtained the KGMP standards from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the pharmacopuncture certification criteria from the Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea. The EHD evaluation items were classified into three categories: facilities, quality control, and validation. The evaluation items were compared with the KGMP sterile medicine criteria to determine their conformance with each other, followed by a discussion among the committee of six experts and their consensus to suggest the items to complement the EHD evaluation criteria. Results: Among the KGMP sterile medicine criteria, 44 were related to the management of the facilities, and 32 pharmacopuncture evaluation items corresponded to these KGMP items (66.7%). Fifty-eight KGMP criteria were related to quality management, and 42 pharmacopuncture evaluation items corresponded to these KGMP items (72.4%). Twentyfive KGMP sterile medicine criteria were related to validation, and 11 pharmacopuncture evaluation items corresponded to these KGMP items (44.0%). Sixteen items under the pharmacopuncture EHD criteria corresponded to the KGMP sterile medicine criteria based on the consent of the experts. Among these, 4 were related to facility management, 6 were related to quality control, and 6 were related to validation. Conclusion: For the safety and quality control of pharmacopuncture, there is a need to select the criteria for the mandatory items among the proposed pharmacopuncture-EHD criteria laws and systems to ensure that the pharmacopuncture materials are produced under the pharmacopuncture-EHD in compliance with the relevant requirements. More studies are needed to secure the safety level of pharmacopuncture materials corresponding to that of conventional medicine.
Objectives : Obesity is currently an epidemic in Korea, and sleep duration is thought to be one of the risk factors for obesity. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that short sleep duration is associated with obesity in Korean adults. Methods : The data from the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey were used, and 6,174 subjects aged $18{\sim}80$ years were included in the analysis. Sleep duration was measured using information obtained from self-reported questionnaires. Obesity, the main outcome variable, was measured according to body mass index. Multiple regression modeling was used to adjust for potential confounding variables. Results : The study results revealed a negative association between sleep duration and body mass index among Korean adults. These associations persisted after controlling for the potential confounding variables. Conclusions : These findings support the hypothesis that sleep duration is associated with obesity in Korean adults. In addition, these observations support earlier experimental sleep studies and provide a basis for future studies on weight control intervention by increasing the amount of sleep.
