  • The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze the indoor thermal conditions of a 8,500GT class chemical carrier which was launched on July 2007. The measurement was operated from 4th June to 4th June 2007, just before handing over to Owner. Followings are the results of this study. (1)The temperature variations of supply air were related to the outdoor temperature variations, but the humidity was stable at $65{\sim}80%$. (2)The temperature variations at the representative position of bridge, restaurant, crew's cabin showed gentle slopes. but that of conference room was very steepy. The humidities of bridge and restaurant were unstable because of outdoor-contact and cooking, respectively. (4)The temperature and humidity of ECR(Engine Control Room) which was designed to supply heating and cooling by PAC(Package Air Conditioner) were directly affected by the operating conditions of PAC. (5)The measured supply air volume from dampers of bridge, crew's cabin and conference room were satisfied with the design supply air volume. (5)For the improvement of the indoor thermal conditions, the temperature of crew's cabin and restaurant and the humidity of conference room, and the temperature and humidity of bridge should be controlled, respectively.

  • Objective: Combination of two stressors on alteration of mineral footprints in animals needs due attention to meet maximum production and welfare, particularly in grazing sheep. This study tested whether ewes (Ovis aries) exposed to water deprivation and thermal-humidity stressors had altered mineral footprints in their wool, serum, urine, and feces. Methods: Nine ewes (age = 3 years; mean body weight = 41±3.5 kg) were divided among a control group with free access to water, and treatment groups with water deprivation lasting either 2 h (2hWD) or 3 h (3hWD) after feeding. Using a 3×3 Latin square design, animals were assigned to treatment groups for three sampling periods of 21 days each (n = 9). Blood was collected by jugular venipuncture. Wool was collected at the end of periods 2 and 3. Metabolic crates designed with metal grated floors were used for urine and feces collection. We measured sodium (Na), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), chloride (Cl), calcium (Ca), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), and zinc (Zn). Results: The wool mineral levels did not differ between the treatment groups, although K was marginally lower (p = 0.10) in the 2hWD group. The serum and urine mineral levels did not differ between the treatments (p>0.05). Fecal K was significantly lower in the 2hWD group than in the other groups (p≤0.05). Conclusion: In conclusion, water deprivation and thermal-humidity exposure altered the excretion of K, but not of other minerals, in the wool, urine, feces, or serum of ewes. Thus, no additional mineral supplementation is needed for water deprived ewes during thermalhumidity exposure.

  • 0.4 Million tons of shell powder have been disused as waste in KOREA and caused severe environmental pollution though shell powder can be utilized in real life for many ways. It is impending problem to recycle shell powder as it requires high expense for burying and temporary outside heap and causes severe environmental pollution being a main factor of ocean waste. To suggest the basic data for development of eco-friendly and high-function Wall Coatings Thin Textured Finishes, a wall coating sample was applied to indoor walls of a mock-up and temperature and humidity were measured to assess the thermal performance of it, and a survey of preference for the color sense and feel of the materials with a movie of specimens. The results of the study are following; 1) High insulation performance is shown from the assessment result of the room polystyrene board adhered on the walls then high humidity controlling performance is shown from that of the room polystyrene board coated by shell powder. This point out that shell powder has superiority for humidity controlling. 2) The result of thermal and humidity assessment shows that shell powder makes up for thermal conduction of the polystyrene board and same result can be expected from the assessment with materials which has similar thermal characteristics with polystyrene.3) Ranking of preferred specimens is; 1st Case 13, 2nd Case 17, 3rd Case 16, and 4th Case 12. Preferred shell powder was the ark shell. Preferred powder for plaster was the powder mixed with that sifted by 0.8mm, 100mesh and 40mesh, and for spray was the fine powder mixed with that sifted by 100mesh and 40mesh.

  • Standard temperature and absolute humidity weather data correlations of Seoul for dynamic energy simulation have been developed regressing the measured data compiled by the Korea Meteorological Adminstration during a l0-year period from 1991 to 2000. The mathematical equations can generate consistent daily and yearly variations of outdoor weather data unlike the measured data which may show abnormal behavior. Considering that each hour of the day follows a certain yearly pattern, 24 correlations are developed for each hour of the day. The derived simple mathematical equations can be used for estimating outdoor temperature and humidity conditions for any arbitrary time of the year.

  • This study measured the mechanical properties of an ash wood under various temperature and humidity conditions and a finite element model was developed to predict the behavior of the wood. A humidity-controlled chamber was developed and used for measuring the dimensional changes of woods under various humidity conditions. The thermal expansion coefficient and the elastic stiffness constants were measured by using a thermal chamber and the three-point bending test along the three principal axes of the wood. A constitutive model was proposed to describe the moisture content and temperature dependent behavior of wood. The proposed model was validated for the warping test of a wood plate. The warping of the plate was calculated using the finite element method. The calculated amount of warping was in consistence with the measurements.

  • This paper shows how the environmental parameters(temperature, humidity) in the greenhouse are influenced by air movement produced by air circulation fans. When the fans were used, they could make indoor temperature and humidity homogenious, but there was no significant difference in the location and number of fans. When the fans were not used during the night time, there was no significant difference in the temperature and humidity, but the standard deviation was reduced by using the fans.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze the ship's indoor thermal conditions and also to integrate experimental database of those, supplied and controlled by ship's HVAC. On this study, temperature, humidity and air volume of 6 different needs' cabin are measured on a newly-launched training ship during 2nd through 5th of April, 2007. Followings are the results of this study. (1)Because only partial loads are needed in spring season, the air volume from diffusers are measured as below 20%. (2)The temperatures are ranged between $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ and those are within comfort temperature range proposed by AHREA. (3)But humidities in cabins are very low and it could be the reason of a cold and/or a skin disease. (4)From the student cabins' measurements which have different supply diffuser(s), it is clear that the design is suitable for this case. (5)Because of low humidity, only 16.1% among the measured data are satisfied with the comfort standard range proposed by ASHREA. To improve the predictability and the comfort, HVAC should maintain the humidity as $40{\sim}60%$.

  • Plywood is one of the important materials in LNG cargo containment systems, and, due to the characteristics of the wood, its properties vary greatly depending on the humidity conditions in the storage facility. Due to the distribution environment of plywood, there is a high probability of long-term exposure to the domestic seasonal environment. Considering an environment in which the humidity changes greatly according to the seasons in Korea and the characteristics of the wood, it is necessary to acquire data on changes in the characteristics of the plywood for accurate quality control. In this study, the moisture content of plywood was determined experimentally to reflect the seasonal environmental conditions of shipyards in Korea. A noticeable change in the thermal conductivity was confirmed experimentally.

  • The thermal comfort of an indoor swimming pool is different from that of general indoor space because of the characteristics of large space and the wear conditions of swimmers. Dew condensation by humid air not only makes mold on the floor, wall and roof but also decreases the durability of buildings by penetrating into their structures. In this study, the characteristics of the flow field, the temperature field and the humidity distribution in an indoor swimming pool have been examined by the numerical method to estimate the level of thermal comfort and the generation rate of dew condensation. The results showed that the dew condensation regions were spread widely at the eastern parts of the swimming pool due to the insufficient air flow rate with low velocity and temperature. To prevent the generation of dew condensation in a region, a sufficient warm air flow rate should be supplied to make an air mixing. The values of PMV at horizontal plane of 1.5 m height have the range of -1.0∼1.2, which means the suitable level for swimmers.
