  • Using a simple compression test, the viscosity measurement experiment is carried out with the grain-refined Al-Si alloy(A356). The measured rheological data are expressed with power-law(Ostwald-de Waele) model and using commercial package, MAGMAsoft, coefficients of Ostwald-de Waele model and Carreau-Yasuda model are calculated. To verify the viscosity data, the die is designed to be applicable to the semi-solid die casting of automotive component and filling test is carried out. The filling test and the simulation result are compared and in good agreement. Hereafter, these data are considered to be usefully allied other product in the semi-solid die casting.

Study of shear and elongational flow of solidifying polypropylene melt for low deformation rates

  • An experimental technique was developed to determine the strain-rate in a tensile specimen. Then one can calculate the transient isothermal elongational viscosity. Both shear and elongational viscosities were measured to study the effect of shear and elongational fields on the flow properties. The comparison between these viscosities shows that the onset of rapid viscosity growth as crystallization solidification proceeds occurs at about the same value of time at very small deformation rates (0.0028 and 0.0047 $s^{-1}$). The comparison of these measured viscosities as functions of shear and elongational Hencky strains also reveals that the onset of rapid viscosity growths starts at critical Hencky strain values. The behaviour of steady shear viscosity as function of temperature sweep was also explored at three different low shear rates. Finally, the influence of changing oscillatory frequencies and strain rates was also investigated.

The Effect of Transverse Vibration on Red Blood Cell Aggregation and Blood Viscosity

  • The present study investigated the effect of transverse vibration on the hemorheological characteristics of blood using a newly designed pressure-scanning capillary viscometer. As vibration was applied, aggregated blood cells (rouleaux) were disaggregated. The range of vibration frequency and amplitude are $0{\sim}100\;Hz$ and $0{\sim}0.8\;mm$, respectively for a capillary diameter 0.84 mm. As vibration increased, blood viscosity initially increased and tended to decrease. In order to delineate the unexpected results, the present study proposed two counteracting mechanisms of vibration related with red blood cell (RBC) aggregation affecting hemo-rheological properties. One is the reduction of RBC aggregation due to vibration causing an increase of blood viscosity. The other is forced cell migration due to the transverse vibration, which in turn forms a cell-free layer near the tube wall and causes a decrease of flow resistance.

Effects of Viscosity of Hydraulic Oil on the Performance of Actuator (유압유 점도가 액추에이터 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • Hydraulic actuator is a primary component of the hydraulic valve systems. In this study, the thrust performance of hydraulic actuator was studied with different values of viscosity of hydraulic oil and rod diameter. Numerical analysis was performed using the commercial CFD code, ANSYS with 2-way FSI(Fluid-Structure Interaction) method and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model. Results show that increase in viscosity of hydraulic oil reduces the thrust of hydraulic actuator. In order to satisfy the output required of the actuator, it is necessary to compensate for the operating pressure. The results of pressure, velocity and thrust efficiency distributions in the hydraulic actuator were graphically depicted.

Transport Properties of Dumbbell Molecules by Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations

  • We presents new results for transport properties of dumbbell fluids by equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) simulations using Green-Kubo and Einstein formulas. It is evident that the interaction between dumbbell molecules is less attractive than that between spherical molecules which leads to higher diffusion and to lower friction. The calculated viscosity, however, is almost independent on the molecular elongation within statistical error bar, which is contradicted to the Stokes' law. The calculated thermal conductivity increases and then decreases as molecular elongation increases. These results of viscosity and thermal conductivity for dumbbell molecules by EMD simulations are inconsistent with the earlier results of those by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. The possible limitation of the Green-Kubo and Einstein formulas with regard to the calculations of viscosity and thermal conductivity for molecular fluids such as the missing rotational degree of freedom is pointed out.

  • In order to develop a fuel-efficient gasoline engine oil, an experimental study was conducted using an engine dynamometer, a passenger car and the SRV machine. Oil samples with different viscosity were prepared by adding several friction modifiers to select the best one and also to investigate the effect of the viscosity grade. From the study, we have developed engine oils which result in good fuel economy. The viscosity grade of 7.5W/30 was best among the oils investigated with respect to fuel economy and a fatty amine type friction modifier had the good fuel-economy property.

Numerical analysis of drag reduction of turbulent flow in a pipe (원관내 난류의 저항감소현상에 대한 수치해석)

  • A modified low-Re $k-\varepsilon$ model is used for the calculation of drag-reducing turbulent flow by polymer injection in a pipe. With the viscoelastic model, molecular viscosity in the definition of turbulent viscosity is related to elongations viscosity of the solution to account for the effects of drag reduction. Finite volume method is used for the discretization, and power-law scheme is used as a numerical scheme. Computed dimensionless velocity profiles are in good agreements with the experimental data in case of low drag reductions. However, in case of high drag reductions, they deviate largely from the measurements in the central zone of the flow field.

Effects of pH and Gamma Irradiation on the Physicochemical Properties of Corn Starch

  • To develop a production method for modified starches with less pollution, pH adjustment and gamma irradiation were applied to commerical corn starch. Blue values were significantly decreased , while alkali number, optical transmittance and solubility markedly increased when gamma irradiation was applied to pH 2 adjusted corn starch. Water binding capacity and swelling power at pH 5 were the highest among the samples. Gelatinization viscosity was considerably affected by gamma irradiation and pH of the starch. Gamma irradiation of pH 2 adjusted starch showed the lowest peak viscosity and the best cooling stability among the tested samples . Therefore, the production of modified starch with low viscosity as well as with sufficient viscosity stability seems feasible by controlling the pH of the starch and gamma irrdiation.

Effective viscosity of bidisperse suspensions

  • We determine the effective viscosity of suspensions with bidisperse particle size distribution by modifying an effective-medium theory that was proposed by Acrivos and Chang (1987) for monodisperse suspensions. The modified theory uses a simple model that captures some important effects of multi-particle hydrodynamic interactions. The modifications are described in detail in the present study. Estimations of effective viscosity by the modified theory are compared with the results of prior work for monodisperse and bidisperse suspensions. It is shown that the estimations agree very well with experimental or other calculated results up to approximately 0.45 of normalized particle volume fraction which is the ratio of volume faction to the maximum volume fraction of particles for bidisperse suspensions.

  • In order to find the effect of lubricant viscosity, sheet surface roughness, tool geometry, and forming speed on the frictional characteristics in sheet metal forming, a sheet metal friction tester was designed and manufactured and friction test of various sheet were performed. Friction test results showed that as the lubricant viscosity becomes lower, the friction coefficient is higher. When surface roughness is extremely low or high, the friction coefficient is relatively high. The result also show that as the punch radius and punch speed becomes bigger, the friction coefficient is smaller. Using experimental results, the mathematical expression between friction coefficient and lubricant viscosity, surface roughness, punch comer radius, or punch speed is also described.
