  • This paper proposes a unit commitment scheduling method based on Parallel Genetic Algorithm(PGA). Due to a variety of constraints to be satisfied, such as the minimum up and down time constraints, the search space of the UC problem is highly nonconvex. So, we used transputer which is one of the practical parallel processors. It can give us fastness and effectiveness features of the proposed method for solving the problem. To show the effectiveness of the PGA based unit commitment scheduling, we tested results for system of 5 units and we can get desirable results.

  • A new fifth-order weighted Runge-Kutta algorithm based on heronian mean for solving initial value problem in ordinary differential equations is considered in this paper. Comparisons in terms of numerical accuracy and size of the stability region between new proposed Runge-Kutta(5,5) algorithm, Runge-Kutta (5,5) based on Harmonic Mean, Runge-Kutta(5,5) based on Contra Harmonic Mean and Runge-Kutta(5,5) based on Geometric Mean are carried out as well. The problems, methods and comparison criteria are specified very carefully. Numerical experiments show that the new algorithm performs better than other three methods in solving variety of initial value problems. The error analysis is discussed and stability polynomials and regions have also been presented.

A Case Study for Creativity Assessment of Problem Solving Process of Mathematically Gifted High School Students Utilizing Construction Protocol of GeoGebra (GeoGebra의 구성단계 기능을 활용한 고등학교 수학 영재 문제해결 과정의 창의성 평가 사례 연구)

  • In this study, we presented a teaching-learning method that can apply process-focused assessment for mathematical creativity of problem solving process of the gifted student, By necessity of appropriate teaching-learning program development to the level and ability of students who belong to high school gifted classes and courses evaluation for students who participated in education programs for the gifted. In the construction implementation process of students utilizing a kind of teaching-learning software, GeoGebra. We analyzed process of a variety of creative constructing figures using interfaces of GeoGebra and algebraic calculation. Utilizing 'Construction Protocol' and 'Navigation Bar' of GeoGebra, We identified computer languages, construction order, run times used in construction process of individual student and found mathematical creativity of students in the process. Comparing this result with prerequisite learning degree of individual student, We verified that this teaching-learning method can apply at the high school gifted classes as well as institutes for the gifted education in the city office.

An Analysis on Teaching of Data Collection in Elementary School Mathematics Textbooks for 3rd and 4th Grades from the Perspective of Statistical Problem Solving Education (통계적 문제해결 교육의 관점에 따른 초등학교 수학 교과서의 자료 수집 지도 방식 분석: 3~4학년군을 중심으로)

  • Data collection is crucial to the process of statistical problem solving since it influences the quality of statistical data. However, there is little instruction on data collection in the Korean mathematics curriculum. In this study, we examined how the data were collected and how the data collection method was taught in the Korean mathematics textbooks for 3rd and 4th grades. As a result, the data appeared in these textbooks were collected by using a variety of methods, including surveys, experiments, observations, and secondary data collections. There were not enough instructions on experiments and observations, compared to surveys and secondary data collection. Additionally, as each textbook works with a distinct contents while teaching data collection, it is expected that there would be variations in the levels that students learn in relation to data collection. Based on these findings, we draw some discussion points to determine how to improve the mathematics curriculum in order to effectively teach data collection in the elementary school.

Designing an Instructional Model for Smart Technology-Enhanced Team-Based Learning (스마트 테크놀로지를 활용한 팀 기반 학습 모형 설계 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to explore and develop a new instructional approach to a technology-enhanced, collaborative learning environment called Smart technology-enhanced Team-Based Learning (S-TBL). We designed a novel instructional model that combines mobile technology, collaborative teamwork, a problem-solving process, and a variety of evaluation techniques from the viewpoint of a conventional team-based model. Based on the traditional TBL model, we have integrated smart learning technologies: 1) to provide a holistic learning environment that integrates learning resources, assessment tools, and problem solving spaces; and 2) to enhance collaboration and communication between team members and between an instructor and his or her students. The S-TBL instructional approach combines: 1) individual learning and collaborative team learning; 2) conceptual learning and problem-solving & critical thinking; 3) both individual and group assessment; 4) self-directed learning and teacher-led instruction; and 5) personal reflection and publication.

  • The environment and requirements of modern war fields have been affected and thus changed by a variety of issues. To this end, the development of safety-critical weapon systems frequently need to meet those changes even in the operational phase. The necessity of the changes may be due to the preparation for mass-production or the request originated from the user military forces. To meet such a need can be even tougher in the development of safety-critical weapon systems since the integration of the requirements for both systems design and systems safety would make it troublesome. To handel the matter in this paper, utilization of architecture DB is proposed. Specifically, the situation in demand has first been analyzed and then a problem-solving process to accommodate the design changes has been constructed. In doing so, the concept of the aforementioned integration is particularly focused on the functional architecture, which could be a core concept of our approach to solving the problem. The result of a case study demonstrating the method studied using a computer-aided systems engineering tool is also presented.

  • With ever-change and increasingly competitive business environments, firms strive to employ a variety of marketing strategies and execution in order to survive in the market. Such effects would be paid off in the right way only when management of the firms perform marketing activities focusing on long term effectiveness, which would drive company profits up and keep them for long. Demands of customers are being changed and varied. And in this circumstance, it become a main issue of management that the company should produce and sell products according to the customer demands. With these trends, each company has been concentrating effects on generalization of product development technique and distinction of service for customer. In this result with the advantage of mass marketing and database marketing have been drawing attentions from company. Also the internet connected around the world completely diminished the limit of time and distance and company have enveloped keen competition out of each nation and continent in the world market. To fulfill these demands of customer, they need a concept of eCRM(Web based Customer Relationship Management), and go from selling products and services, or gathering customer requests, up to the phase of solving customer's problem by real time or previous action. With the help of internet, the frequency and speed of the problem solving has improved greatly.

Emerging Role of Primary Leader in Group Interaction with Mechanics Problems During Upper-level Mechanics Course

  • According to social constructivism, group interaction is very important when students construct their knowledge. Many researchers have developed methods of teaching on the basis of group interaction because they recognized the importance of group interaction. There are a large variety of issues related to group interaction including group size, the gender and ability composition of groups, seating arrangements, textbook use, gestures, and role assignments. However, research on group interaction in science learning is still insufficient. In this study, we focused upon the emerging role of the primary leader. We investigated the primary leader's diverse role when students are solving mechanics problems. The participants were one group composed of three students in an upper-level mechanics class. To analyze these students' group interactions, their verbal interactions during meetings were videotaped and audiotaped during one-semester period. We also conducted interviews with the three students and analyzed their reports. As a result, we could find a special student who had the role of primary leader. We could also find the leader's three different leadership roles in different problem situations by inductively; explainer, facilitator and evaluator. Group interaction had different aspect according to the different role of leaders. The group interactions were the most active when the leader played the role of facilitator.

Teaching the Derivation of Area Formulas for Polygonal Regions through Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO): A Visual Reasoning Approach

  • Utilizing a structure of operations known as Dissection-Motion-Operations (DMO), a set of mathematics propositions or area-formulas in school mathematics will be introduced through shape-to-shape transforms. The underlying theme for DMO is problem-solving through visual reasoning and proving manipulatively or electronically vs. rote learning and memorization. Visual reasoning is the focus here where two operations that constitute DMO are utilized. One operation is known as Dissection (or Decomposition) operation that operates on a given region in 2D or 3D and dissects it into a number of subregions. The second operation is known as Motion (or Composition) operation applied on the resultant sub-regions to form a distinct area (or volume)-equivalent region. In 2D for example, DMO can transform a given polygon into a variety of new and distinct polygons each of which is area-equivalent to the original polygon (cf [Rahim, M. H. & Sawada, D. (1986).
