  • Multivariate regular variation is a popular framework of multivariate extreme value analysis. However, a suitable parametric model needs to be introduced for efficient estimation of its spectral measure. In such a view, elliptical distributions have been employed for deriving such models. On the other hand, the second order behavior of multivariate regular variation has to be specified for investigating the property of the estimator. This paper derives such a behavior by imposing a widely adopted second order regular variation condition on the representation of elliptical distributions. As result, the second order variation for the convergence to spectral measure is characterized by a signed measure with a regular varying index. Moreover, it leads to the asymptotic bias of the estimator. For demonstration, multivariate t-distribution is considered.

  • Linear high-density polyethylene (PE) was controlled to induce strain-hardening behavior by introducing a small amount of second component with an anisotropic structure. In order to form an anisotropic structure in the PE matrix, the polymer was extruded through a twin-screw extruder, and the structure was controlled by varying the extrusion conditions. Depending on conditions, the second component formed a film, thread and droplet structure. If the second component was kept rigid, the morphology evolution could be delayed and the second component could maintain its film or thread structure without further relaxation. In particular, the second component of the thread structure made a physical network and gave rise to remarkable strain hardening behavior under high extension. This study suggests a new method that induces strain hardening behavior by introducing a physically networked second component into the linear polymer melt. This result is anticipated to improve the processibility of linear polymers especially when extensional flow is dominant, and to contribute to our understanding of strain hardening behavior.

  • In [9], we computed shadows of the second order mock theta functions and showed that they are essentially same with the shadow of a mock theta function related to the Mathieu moonshine phenomenon. In this paper, we further survey the second order mock theta functions on their quantum modularity and their behavior in the lower half plane.

  • A new bounce back boundary method of the second order in error is proposed for the lattice Boltzmann fluid simulation. This new method can be used for the arbitrarily irregular lattice geometry of a non-slip boundary. The traditional bounce back boundary condition for the lattice Boltzmann simulation is of the first order in error. Since the lattice Boltzmann method is the second order scheme by itself, a boundary technique of the second order has been desired to replace the first order bounce back method. This study shows that, contrary to the common belief that the bounce back boundary condition is unilaterally of the first order, the second order bounce back boundary condition can be realized. This study also shows that there exists a generalized bounce back technique that can be characterized by a single interpolation parameter. The second order bounce back method can be obtained by proper selection of this parameter in accordance with the detailed lattice geometry of the boundary. For an illustrative purpose, the transient Couette and the plane Poiseuille flows are solved by the lattice Boltzmann simulation with various boundary conditions. The results show that the generalized bounce back method yields the second order behavior in the error of the solution, provided that the interpolation parameter is properly selected. Coupled with its intuitive nature and the ease of implementation, the bounce back method can be as good as any second order boundary method.
