A Study on Modeling Digital library for Informatization of School Education (학교교육 정보화를 위한 디지털 도서관 모형에 관한 연구)

  • There were two purpose of this study. One was to develope a digital library as a way of facilitating students\` learning. The other was to design a model of a digital library for school. For this, current Korean educational information network plan and the problems of school libraries were analyzed first. Second, the role of school library was identified: to build a self-motivated learning environment in an information society and to help students developing creative learning abilities. Finally, a model of digital school library was suggested.

Progress and Problems in Korean School Library Policies (학교도서관정책의 추이와 과제: 인력정책을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this article is to discuss about the progress and problems in Korean school library policies. The emphasis is on identifying both distinctive features and indigenous limitations in policy-making process, and special concerns are with both side effects and backgrounds of its rough-and-ready human resource policy. This article intends to approach the human resource policy issues from the viewpoints of school librarians as well as those of policy makers. The final suggestion includes both strategies and methods to make up and intensify the weakness of Korean school library policies, with focusing on enhancing the work competency of school librarians as well as the policy capacity of school library association.

  • This study aims at developing standardized needs assessment tool for school library facilities. To find common properties of school library facilities, this study explored KLA's Standards for Korean Libraries, IFLA's The School Library Guidelines and AASL's Empowering Learners. Through these standards 10 common properties are selected to include in the assessment tool. As the result, this study proposed needs assessment tool for school library facilities in form of survey and several ways to apply it according to each library situation.

  • This study aims to investigate and analyze the current status of user education and the school library staffs' perceptions in elementary school libraries in Gyeongnam, and then to propose a plan to improve user education in school libraries. Among the 168 school libraries in the Gyeongsangnam-do where librarians are deployed, 120 that responded to the survey were selected as research subjects. The contents of the study include the contents and methods of user education, the status of librarian education for user education, school library staffs understanding and interest in user education, school library staffs' perceptions of the necessity and effectiveness of user education, and school library staffs' efforts to strengthen capacity of user education. Based on the current status of user education and the results of the school library staffs' perceptions survey, the following are proposed as a way to improve user education of the school library: 1) expanding librarian education opportunities for user education, 2) development and distribution of educational materials that diversify the content and level of each grade, 3) organizing normal school hours for user education, 4) continuous efforts to strengthen capacity for user education.

  • This paper aims to suggest new strategies for operating school library digital resource room by analyzing the current states of 349 school library digital resource room and its educational effects. The project for school library digital resource room provided the foundations for the various informational and educational services : extended information materials, changes in library environment, collecting information through the web sites, providing authentic materials, reading instruction, library assisted instruction (LAI). The suggestions are as follows. 1) The national standards is required for the digital resources room in school libraries. 2) Reading and information literacy instruction should be institutionalized. 3) Library assisted instruction (LAI) should be included in school curriculum. 4) Professionally qualified teacher librarians are required for planning and managing the school library. 5) School library in-service program is needed for all members of the school community.

  • The Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development is propelling the establishment's project of school library digital resource room under recognizing school library is essential facility that it is to educate students to become autonomous and creative person, to embodies a 7th curriculum in the knowledge base society. There is a necessity which it will analyze demonstrative operating school library digital resource room for maximize to educational effect and to establish efficiently. Thus, this study is prepares a foundation of school library informationization as analyzes an operational status and an educational effect with 96 school library digital resource room which are established in tool year.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the mutual cooperations of school and public libraries in Japan, and to investigate the possibility of its application to Korea. To the end, discussed in details are the characteristics and limitations of cooperative activities between school and public libraries in Japan. The major contents of this study are as follows: First, analyzed are the present conditions of school libraries in Japan, with emphasis on human resources, facilities, and school library policies. Second, comprehensively investigated are the cooperation projects of school and public libraries which have been conducted by the central and local governments. Finally, discussed are the meanings of library cooperations in Japan and its implications for Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to elicit the priority of the index of the operation evaluation of the school library, and to present measures for improvement of the evaluation index that reflects the project sites. To this end, the school library evaluation index was analyzed by applying the Analytic Hierarchy Process(AHP) analysis method to teacher librarians who are the representative personnel of the school library. According to the research, the priority of the upper tier evaluation areas was human resources, library services, information resources, library management, facilities and environment, and the priority of the lower tier evaluation items was human resource allocation, human resources expertise, reading education, information literacy education, efforts to activate education, book composition snowflake, the latest book, budget, facility access, book status, appropriateness of facilities and facilities, management plan, proximity accessibility, PR and marketing, school library steering committee, cooperation, use of materials current status. The conclusions drawn from this study could be used as basic data in the application of fieldworked school library assessment indicators.

  • The school library plays an important role to improve the student's mental activity and cultivate the formation of character and emotion. Especially in the information society, the students must collect, select and utilize the necessary information themselves. The school library has to collect, put in order and keep the book, audiovisual material and necessary information beyond it about the entire education and to offer the students and teachers them for the general school education. The school library has to be a center of school education and drive forwards the spontaneous and subjective learning activity as well as progress the education process. The school library must be the place to preserve the student's subjective study ability, that is, consolidate the materials as the study center and be composed of proper study materials for the solving-problem and research. Also to be perfect in the role of the information center, the school library has to be consolidated in accordance with development of various information softwares and ways including the newspaper, magazine, video, CD, laser disk and computer. It is required for the information of school library to be corresponded actively to the multi-media society.

A study on the standard of school library materials (학교도서관 자료기준에 관한 고찰)

  • In contemporary education, a school library is considered and valued as a vital and integral component of a school's instructional program. Especially, school library materials should contribute to execution of school curriculums through wide provision of resources. The results of the study are as follows. 1. The term 'library materials' should be changed into 'library resources' with a broad meaning. And, the scope of school library materials should include printed materials, audio-visual materials, electronic materials, associated equipment and other library resources. 2. It is desirable that the minimal standards of total collection is 5 books and 3 AV for a student in elementary schools, 7 books and 5 AV for a student in middle schools, 10 books and 7 AV for a student in high schools. 3. Annual growth is 0.5 for a student in elementary schools, 1 for a student in middle schools and 1.5 copy for a student in high schools. And, the number of minimal serials is 20 titles in elementary schools, 30 titles in middle schools and 50 tides in high schools. 4. Besides, basic collection, with the advances of technology, the school library collection should include new formats and delivery systems such as CD, video discs, videotex, computer software, satellite transmission etc. 5. The recommendable annual ratio of withdrawl is 3 to 5% for update and functional materials.
