The insecticides MIPC, BPMC, carbofuran and diazinon were treated to the brown planthopper (BPH) , Nilaparvata lugens STAL, at the dose levels of $LD_{10}\;and\;LD_{50}$(by topical application)/at the rate of 40kg/ha (product base) (by dusting or broadcasting on potted rice). The BPH population in the first generation was significantly decreased in the topical treatments compared to the untreatment. The number of BPH offsprings was relatively greater at the dose level of $LD_{10}\;than\;of\;LD_{50}$. The number of nymphs, however, were greatly varied with the insecticides. The offsprings from the BPH treated with the rate of 40kg/ha showed longer nymphal periods and higher adult emergence, but except diazinon treatment, rather less egg-numbers were observed. The BPH population density was significantly decreased in general up to 38 days after treatment(DAT) in the treated pots. Among the insecticides tested, however, only diazinon induced greater number of insects at the 54 DAT compared to the untreated pots.
The newly hatched nymphs of brown planthopper(BPH) were reared individually for two generations in test tubes, where young rice seedling was planted on agar solution, at $30^{\circ}C,\;25^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C\;with\;95\%,\;75\%,\;65\%\;and\;35\%$ R.H. Effects of $30^{\circ}C$ on the development of BPH when compared with those of $25^{\circ}C$ are followings. Egg period, nymphal period, and adult longevity were shortened. Nymphal mortality was increased and the number of oviposited eggs was decreased. Hatchability was zero per cent because the eggs were either unfertilized or died before finishing the development. At the low temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, in comparision with $25^{\circ}C$, the developmental period of nymphs and eggs was considerably lengthened, and adult longevity was shortened, the number of oviposited eggs was decreased. The nymphal mortality was higher at high relative humidity $(above\;75\%\;RH)$ than that at low relative humidity $(under\;65\%\;RH)$. Under the condition of high relative humidities, the adult longevity was shortened, and the number of oviposited eggs was decreased.

Rice stripe virus causes severe damage to rice in Korea, Japan and China. RSV is a type member of the tenuivirus group and transmitted by the small brown planthopper, Laodeiphax striatellus, in a persistant manner. Until now, occurrence of RSV is limited in of southern part of Korea. But recently occurrence of RSV is increasing and spreading in central part of Korea including Chungcheong and Kyonggi province. So we analyzed recent occurrence trend of RSV which is increased and cloned and sequenced coat protein gene for isolating of RSV strain. Infected rice of each species(Ilpumbyeo, Sindongjinbyeo, Keumobyeo-2, Dongjinbyeo, Jongnambyeo, Samcheonbyeo, etc.)is collected, we extracted total RNA from infected leaves and detected RSV viral RNA by reverse transcription(RT)-PCR using specific primer of coat protein gene. The result of RT-PCR, we observed specific band. We already cloned cDNA from the band, is analyzing sequence variety and homology of each species.
Experiment was conducted to select the rice varieties and lines resistant to the smaller brown planthopper, Laodelphax striatellus Fallen, and study the cause of varietal resistance to the insect. The nature of varietal resistance was evaluated from the viewpoints of feeding and ovipositional preferences and antibiosis. Among the IRRI sources the varieties H 105, Muthumanikam, Vellailangalayan, Karsamba Red ASD-7. Manavari Co 22, Mudgo, PTB-18, IR 8 and IR 20 were selected as resistant sources. Among the domestic sources. only Suweon 213-1, Suweon 214 and Suweon 215 originated from the IR667 lines were resistant, and other leading varieties ail susceptible. The cause of resistance of rice to the insect seemed to be highly related with the non-feeding preference, not non-ovipositional preference. Nymphal mortality and rate of adult emergence were significantly different from the resistant and susceptible varieties. The rate of adult emergence was significantly lower in the resistant than In the susceptible varieties. The primary cause of lower adult emergence seemed to be due to the fact that the infects were suffered higher nymphal mortality in the resistant than in the susceptible varieties.
The brown planthopper (BPH) is a major insect pest in rice, and damages these plants by sucking phloem-sap and transmitting viral diseases. Many BPH resistance genes have been identified in indica varieties and wild rice accessions, but none has yet been cloned. In the present study we report fine mapping of the region containing the Bph1 locus, which enabled us to perform marker-aided selection (MAS). We used 273 F8 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between Cheongcheongbyeo, an indica type variety harboring Bph1 from Mudgo, and Hwayeongbyeo, a BPH susceptible japonica variety. By random amplification of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis using 656 random 10-mer primers, three RAPD markers (OPH09, OPA10 and OPA15) linked to Bph1 were identified and converted to SCAR (sequence characterized amplified region) markers. These markers were found to be contained in two BAC clones derived from chromosome 12: OPH09 on OSJNBa0011B18, and both OPA10 and OPA15 on OSJNBa0040E10. By sequence analysis of ten additional BAC clones evenly distributed between OSJNBa0011B18 and OSJNBa0040E10, we developed 15 STS markers. Of these, pBPH4 and pBPH14 flanked Bph1 at distances of 0.2 cM and 0.8 cM, respectively. The STS markers pBPH9, pBPH19, pBPH20, and pBPH21 co-segregated with Bph1. These markers were shown to be very useful for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding populations of 32 F6 RILs from a cross between Andabyeo and IR71190, and 32 F5 RILs from a cross between Andabyeo and Suwon452.

This study was carried out to select DNA markers closely linked to brown planthopper (BPH) resistance gene originated from a rice cultivar 'Cheongcheongbyeo'. For the mapping of resistant gene to BPH, a doubled-haploid (DH) population was developed by anther culture of $F_1$ plants from a cross 'Cheongcheongbyeo/Nagdongbyeo'. In BPH bioassay and marker screening for the DH population, the segregation of resistant and susceptible plants to BPH fitted to a 1:1 ratio. A total of 310 RAPDs of 520 markers showed polymorphism in parental survey using 'Cheongcheongbyeo' and 'Nagdongbyeo'. In the analysis of relationship between BPH resistance and marker pattern for 40 DH lines, the OPE16 produced a specific dominant fragment, 700 bp, which was closely linked with BPH resistance gene of 'Cheongcheongbyeo'. Based on the linkage analysis using 7 markers, BPH resistance of 'Cheongcheongbyeo' was mapped on chromosome 12, which was closely linked with $OPE16_{700}$ at a distance of 4.6 cM.
A comparative study of chemical characteristics, efficacy and relative merits of extruded and coated granules, containing fungicide and insecticide, was conducted under laboratory and field conditions. Probenzole (3-allyloxy-1,2-benzisothiazole 1,1-dioxide) and carbofuran (2,3-dihydro-2,2-dimethyl-7-benzofuranyl methyl carbamate) were chosen as toxicants for rice blast(Pyricularia oryzae) and brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) control, respectively. Stability of active ingredients in coated granule was superior to the extruded one under accelerated temperature. Active ingredient dissolution of coated one into distilled water showed slow release pattern. Pesticide residues in rice (Oryzae sativa, Chucheongbyeo) shoot applied with extruded one at the dosage of 3kg/10a retained higher levels than those with coated one on two days after application, while the residue levels were a reversed tendency on eight days after application. Efficacy on rice blast exhibited minute differences between the granules, on the other hand efficacy on brown planthopper by coated one was of higher rank than that by extruded one. Production cost of the combined pesticide granule by coating method could be cut down by 6% as compared to extrusion method.

Developing elite hybrid rice varieties is one important objective of rice breeding programs. Several genes related to male sterilities, restores, and pollinators have been identified through map-based gene cloning within natural variations of rice. These identified genes are good targets for introducing genetic traits in molecular breeding. This study was conducted to breed elite hybrid lines with major genes related to hybrid traits and disease/insect resistance in 240 genetic resources and F1 hybrid combinations of rice. Molecular markers were reset for three major hybrid genes (S5, Rf3, Rf4) and thirteen disease/insect resistant genes (rice bacterial blight resistance genes Xa3, Xa4, xa5, Xa7, xa13, Xa21; blast resistance genes Pita, Pib, Pi5, Pii; brown planthopper resistant genes Bph18(t) and tungro virus resistance gene tsv1). Genotypes were then analyzed using molecular marker-assisted selection (MAS). Biological assay was then performed at the Red River Delta region in Vietnam using eleven F1 hybrid combinations and two control vatieties. Results showed that nine F1 hybrid combinations were highly resistant to rice bacterial blight and blast. Finally, eight F1 hybrid rice varieties with resistance to disease/insect were selected from eleven F1 hybrid combinations. Their characteristics such as agricultural traits and yields were then investigated. These F1 hybrid rice varieties developed with major genes related to hybrid traits and disease/insect resistant genes could be useful for hybrid breeding programs to achieve high yield with biotic and abiotic resistance.
This study was conducted to select excellent tank mix combinations of pesticides for aerial application by manned helicopter. Among 209 pesticide combinations of 3-way tank-mixing for aerial application, a total of 93 recommendable combinations including tricyclazole SC+validamycin-A SL+imidacloprid SL were finally selected for the simultaneous control of key pests on paddy rice such as blast, sheath blight, brown planthopper and moth. The selected combinations were not phytotoxic to rice plants and nearby non-target crops, and excellent in physicochemical properties of ultra low volume (ULV) spray solutions. The efficacies on sheath blight, brown planthoppers and white-backed planthoppers of pesticides sprayed by aerial application were similar to those of pesticides by conventional spraying. Total cost of aerial application in paddy rice was very economical as one fourth level of that of conventional spraying.
The effects of climatic factors on organisms lire variable and complex, and it, however, can be interpreted in terms of those on the distribution and those on the population densities. The distribution of an organism may largely be determined by the temperatures, except some temporal organisms which are depended on the air mass movements. Population density of an organism is determined by various climatic factors, such as previous winter temperature, temperature of growing season and rainfall. The start of growing season of the rice plants has been shifted to earlier since last decade in Korea. This may mean that the overall climatic condition during the growing season might be considerably different from those in past years, and such a difference in climatic conditions might have close relation with the recent status of the diseases and insect pests through direct effects on the physiology and population dynamics of the organisms, as well as through on the biotic associations of the pest organisms. The white back planthopper and brown planthopper have become the key insect pests in Korea in recent years. They are migratory and have high reproductive pontentials and more generations than average residential insects. The synchronization of the migrants and physiological condition of the rice plants seems to be the important factors in relation to the recent outbreaks of these insects; the high reproductive rate can be obtained with the growth stage of rice being 30-50 days after transplanting. The modication of the microclimate associated with high plant density and some other introduced new cultural techniques also have some relation with the outbreak. The key diseases of the rice are the blast disease, sheath blight and the bacterial leaf blight. For the rice blast, the seedling blast and leaf blast during the early growing season and the neck blast, have become more serious, the former may be related to hotbed nursery and the later may be related to the high humidity in early August, and synchronization of the heading time which has been shifted to early part from middle or late part of August. In general, for the rice diseases, the development of the new races have been the most serious which are largely resulted from the introduction of the new varieties, but it also seems to be related with the prolonged periods of the favorable condition associated with the shifted growing seasons. In general, the diseases and insect pest problems have become much more variable and complex, and control measures should be based on the thorough knowledge of the ecology of the pest organisms, that is, effects of various environmental factors on the disease cycle; spore release, spore deposition, infection, colonization and sporulation of the disease organisms, and those on the development, reproductive potentials, dispersal, age specific responses of the insects. The well organized real-time pest management systems, such as alfalfa weevil management system developed at the Purdue University in U.S., is the prime importance for the implementation of the pest management principles.
